Learning from the Eu Constitutional Treaty: Democratic

Learning from the Eu Constitutional Treaty: Democratic

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Crum, Ben, PUBLISHER: Routledge, Assessing the EU Constitutional Treaty proposes a theory of democratic constitutionalisation beyond the nation-state, through a reconstruction of the fate of the EU Constitutional Treaty. Even if much of the substance of the Constitutional Treaty survives in the EU Treaty of Lisbon that has come into force in , the process of democratic constitutionalisation to which it aspired has to be deemed a failure. Still, the Constitutional Treaty process can be considered as a first attempt to provide international institutions with a democratic foundation that has been the object of the peoples consent. The book analyses the EU Constitutional Treaty process from a normative perspective that is grounded in broader political theoretical debates about democratic constitutionalism and globalisation. It will be of interest to students and scholars of European Union politics, history and policy.

Canada's Rights Revolution: Social Movements and Social

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Clement, Dominique, PUBLISHER: UBC Press, In the first major study of postwar social movement organizations in Canada, Dominique Cl?ment provides a history of the human rights movement as seen through the eyes of two generations of activists. Drawing on newly acquired archival sources, extensive interviews, and materials released through access to information applications, Cl?ment explores the history of four organizations that emerged in the sixties and evolved into powerful lobbies for human rights despite bitter internal disputes and intense rivalries. This book offers a unique perspective on infamous human rights controversies and argues that the idea of human rights has historically been highly statist while grassroots activism has been at the heart of the most profound human rights advances. Shakespeare's Knowledge and Use of the Bible

Shakespeare's Knowledge and Use of the Bible

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Wordsworth, Charles, PUBLISHER: University Press of the Pacific, From the author's preface: "I am not aware that the attempt made in this small volume has been anticipated in any other. Even the notes of critics upon Shakespeare, superfluously full in pointing out his obligations, real or supposed, to secular authors, are singularly meagre in the references which they make to the Holy Scriptures. And yet how abundant is the room for such reference, and how much it may conduce to the mutual illustration of the two books, which as Christians and as Britons we should value most, will be seen, I trust, upon every page of the Second Part of the following dissertation." Death Comes to Pemberley

Death Comes to Pemberley

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: James, P. D., PUBLISHER: Vintage Books, A rare meeting of literary genius: P. D. James, long among the most admired mystery writers of our time, draws the characters of Jane Austen's beloved novel "Pride and Prejudice" into a tale of murder and emotional mayhem. It is , six years since Elizabeth and Darcy embarked on their life together at Pemberley, Darcy's magnificent estate. Their peaceful, orderly world seems almost unassailable. Elizabeth has found her footing as the chatelaine of the great house. They have two fine sons, Fitzwilliam and Charles. Elizabeth's sister Jane and her husband, Bingley, live nearby; her father visits often; there is optimistic talk about the prospects of marriage for Darcy's sister Georgiana. A coach careens up the drive carrying Lydia, Elizabeth's disgraced sister, who with her husband, the very dubious Wickham, has been banned from Pemberley. Mrs. Dalloway

Mrs. Dalloway

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Woolf, Virginia / Howard, Maureen, PUBLISHER: Harvest Books, This brilliant novel explores the hidden springs of thought and action in one day of a woman's life. Direct and vivid in her account of the details of Clarissa Dalloway's preparations for a party she is to give that evening, Woolf ultimately managed to reveal much more. For it is the feeling behind these daily events that gives Mrs. Dalloway its texture and richness and makes it so memorable. Foreword by Maureen Howard. "Mrs. Dalloway was the first novel to split the atom. If the novel before Mrs. Dalloway aspired to immensities of scope and scale, to heroic journeys across vast landscapes, with Mrs. Dalloway Virginia Woolf insisted that it could also locate the enormous within the everyday; that a life of errands and party-giving was every bit as viable a subject as any life lived anywhere; and that should any human act in any novel seem unimportant, it has merely been inadequately observed. The novel as an art form has not been the same since. "Mrs. Dalloway also contains some of the most beautiful, complex, incisive and idiosyncratic sentences ever written in English, and that alone would be reason enough to read it. It is one of the most moving, revolutionary artworks of the twentieth century." --Michael Cunningham, author of The Hours

The White Boy Shuffle

The White Boy Shuffle

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Beatty, Paul, PUBLISHER: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH), Paul Beatty, on the basis of two slim collections of poetry, Big Bank Take Little Bank and Joker, Joker, Deuce, has been called "the premier bard of hip hop," "a West Coast word wizard," and"the poet laureate of Generation X." He has performed his poetry on college campuses throughout the United States and Europe; he's been lauded by Henry Louis Gates, Jr.; and at thirty-three years old, he has been deemed heir to Allen Ginsberg's oral tradition. His cultural landscape summons up music, sound bites, cartoons, films, and video games. He uses the terms of pop culture to reveal its nonsense, and in his astonishing first novel he brings his extraordinary talent for image, cadence, and rhythm to fiction. Beatty's partly autobiographical novel is a moving, deft satire on issues of race as well as a coming-of-age of a contemporary African American, Gunnar Kaufman, who is in no way typical. Unequivocally and without apology, Gunnar states that he is not the seventh son of a seventh son of a se

Acts of Naming: The Family Plot in Fiction

Acts of Naming: The Family Plot in Fiction

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ragussis, Michael, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, Michael Ragussis re-reads the novelistic tradition by arguing the acts of naming--bestowing, revealing, or earning a name; taking away, hiding, or prohibiting a name; slandering, or protecting and serving it--lie at the center of fictional plots from the 18th century to the present. Against the background of philosophic approaches to naming, Acts of Naming reveals the ways in which systems of naming are used to appropriate characters in novels as diverse as Clarissa, Fanny Hill, Oliver Twist, Pierre, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Remembrance of Things Past, and Lolita, and identifies unnaming and renaming as the locus of power in the family's plot to control the child, and more particularly, to rape the daughter. His analysis also treats additional works by Cooper, Bronte, Hawthorne, Eliot, Twain, Conrad, and Faulkner, extending the concept of the naming plot to reimagine the traditions of the novel, comparing American and British plots, female and male plots, inheritance and seduction plots, and so on. Acts of Naming ends with a theoretical exploration of the "magical" power of naming in different eras and in different, even competing, forms of discourse.

Anti-Arab Racism in the USA: Where It Comes from and What It

Anti-Arab Racism in the USA: Where It Comes from and What It

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Salaita, Steven, PUBLISHER: Pluto Press (UK), Today is a difficult time to be both Arab and American. Since 9/11 there has been a lot of criticism of America's involvement in the middle east. Yet there has been little analysis of how America treats citizens of Arab or middle eastern origin within its own borders. Steven Salaita explores the reality of Anti-Arab racism in America. He blends personal narrative, theory and polemics to show how this deep-rooted racism affects everything from legislation to cultural life, shining a light on the consequences of Anti-Arab racism both at home and abroad.Uniquely, the book shows how ingrained racist attitudes can be found within the progressive movements on the political left, as well as the right. Salaita argues that, under the guise of patriotism, Anti-Arab racism fuels support for policies such as the Patriot Act. Salaita breaks down the facade of Anti-Arab racism with an insightful analysis, arguing for the urgency of a commitment to openness and inclusion in today's political climate.

 Fender Stratocaster, original pre-CBS

Fender Stratocaster, original pre-CBS

This Fender Stratocaster dates from , or early latest, and has been a one-owner guitar since the mid 70s Despite the original appearance, this actually has a very old (probably s) refinish to both neck and body. There are no markings to identify it as a factory refin, but it is certainly good as. This guitar is still as purchased by the last owner circa other than the following two recent changes: The original tuners had been replaced with a set of Schallers. I have replaced these with a good set of original single-line Klusons. Luckily the Klusons conceal the added fixing holes for the Schallers, but there is still an impression from the washers on the front of the headstock. A superfluous added string tree has been removed, leaving a small hole in the front of the headstock. Otherwise this Strat is substantially original and in great playing condition, but with this kind of guitar I guess you need a lot more detail than that. So having checked it out pretty thoroughly, I'll go through all the "guitarchaeology" bit by bit. BODY This is a good honest body with no added holes or routs at all. The refinish is a 2-colour sunburst (possibly attempting to match the original as early 3-colour bursts tended to fade very quickly to 2-colour). As the pics show, there is an area of wear through the finish on the rear of the body, surrounded by various scratch marks and buckle rash (lesson learned - when playing a valuable guitar, don't wear chainmail!). But other than lacquer cracking over the entire surface, the rest is pretty clean with only minimal dings etc. The nail holes are pretty well obscured by the refin and I've only managed to positively locate 2 of them at all, but the two dowels in the rear (probably the most reliable indicator of originality) are easily findable if you know where to look. NECK The refinished neck is in excellent near ding-free condition and feels nicely played in, though not yet worn through the lacquer. I believe

Courting Disaster: The Supreme Court and the Unmaking of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Garbus, Martin, PUBLISHER: Times Books, A provocative look at the naked political agenda of today's Supreme Court, from one of America's foremost jurists. In the fall of , when the United States Supreme Court handed down a decision that effectively decided a Presidential election, the Court's role in political life suddenly was thrust onto center stage. But, as legendary attorney and activist Martin Garbus argues, the Court has been a hotbed of politics for years, and it's time we took off our blinders and stopped treating the justices as the protectors of objective truth. For more than a generation, the Supreme Court has been quietly but aggressively rolling back legislation that has been fundamental to our justice system and economy since the days of Franklin Roosevelt. Although they remain on the books, laws concerning everything from abortion to the rights of suspects have been all but eviscerated. Most of the legal principles involved are subtle and technical, and often are lost on the general public. But in Courting Disaster Garbus brilliantly explicates the ways in which seemingly small decisions by the Court can preciptate radical change in American law, and then in American society. Ultimately, Garbus issues a passionate, well-argued wake-up call to liberal forces, urging the restoration of the Court's bipartisanship and objectivity.

The Supreme Courtress

The Supreme Courtress

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Wagman, Robert J., PUBLISHER: World Almanac Books, The Supreme Court has been at the center of American political and legal controversy for two hundred years. From "Marbury v. Madison" to "Roe v. Wade" and beyond, the court has decided matters of slavery, freedom of speech, criminal rights, privacy rights and civil rights. Battles over confirmation, and struggles between the President and the court have been at the center of some of the most dramatic constitutional crises in American history. Andrew Jackson's battles with Justice Marshall, Roosevelt's failed attempt to "pack" the court, and the court's vital role in Nixon's Watergate crisis are only a few of the dramatic moments in this fascinating story. As the only affordable one-volume study of the court available, this book feels a real void. It covers, in plain English, the whole panorama of the court's nearly 200 years of decision and debate, and includes biographies of every justice; a complete and concise history of the court; the 100 most important decisions, as well as the ten worst decisions; a detailed analysis of how one case makes its way through the court; a study of the people, the clerks, the support staff and the politics of the court's day-to-day operations, a complete glossary of legal terms, and a detailed bibliography. "The Supreme Court: A Citizen's Guide" is an indispensable book for American history scholars, legal buffs and everyone seeking a better understanding of the people, politics, and traditions of this vital institution.
