The Scandal of Gender

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Mitchell, Patrick, PUBLISHER: Regina Orthodox Press, What did the Fathers of the historic Church teach about the role of women in the Church? For many years the answer to this question has come from feminist theologians. It has been difficult to find a book that presents what the Church Fathers and the Scriptures teach on women and men's role in the life of the Church. The Scandal of Gender brings us into direct contact with the authentic and original teachings of the ancient Christian Church Fathers on the issue of the proper role of women and men in the life of the Church. The point of view of the Reader Patrick Mitchell reflects the traditional Orthodox point of view of the Early Church Fathers and the Bible.

Justice, Gender, and the Politics of Multiculturalism

Justice, Gender, and the Politics of Multiculturalism

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Song, Sarah, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, Justice, Gender and the Politics of Multiculturalism explores the tensions that arise when culturally diverse democratic states pursue both justice for religious and cultural minorities and justice for women. Sarah Song provides a distinctive argument about the circumstances under which egalitarian justice requires special accommodations for cultural minorities while emphasizing the value of gender equality as an important limit on cultural accommodation. Drawing on detailed case studies of gendered cultural conflicts, including conflicts over the 'cultural defense' in criminal law, aboriginal membership rules and polygamy, Song offers a fresh perspective on multicultural politics by examining the role of intercultural interactions in shaping such conflicts. In particular, she demonstrates the different ways that majority institutions have reinforced gender inequality in minority communities and, in light of this, argues in favour of resolving gendered cultural dilemmas through intercultural democratic dialogue.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Maher, Lisa, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Based on three years of ethnographic work in New York City, this book provides the first detailed account of the economic lives of women drug users. Set in a neighborhood plagued with AIDS, Sexed Work reveals the economic lives of a group of women whose options have been severely circumscribed, not only by drug use, but also by poverty, racism, violence, and enduring marginality. Maher draws extensively on the women's own words to describe how structures and relations of gender, race and class are articulated by divisions of labor in the street-level drug economy. This rich, nuanced and theoretically sophisticated study of "crime as work" will be compelling reading for all those interested in the way in which women deal with the intersection of gender, race, and work.

The Celebration of Scandal: Toward the Sublime in Victorian

The Celebration of Scandal: Toward the Sublime in Victorian

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bernstein, Carol L., PUBLISHER: Penn State University Press, Bernstein explores the representation of the city in Victorian fiction--from the scandal of its slums, through the sublime of its fashionable society, to a darker urban sublime. The Celebration of Scandal analyzes the urban fiction of both well-known novelists (Dickens, Gissing, James, and Meredith) and more marginal writers (Disraeli and Bulwer-Lytton) in terms of their representations of the city, both the scandalous and the sublime. It also includes a discussion of the dandy novels of Catherine Gore, whose parodies of high life are virtually unknown to modern readers. Bernstein explores the scandals lying at the heart of the representation of the city in Victorian fiction. Social scandals--slums that belie the myths of urban progress, for instance--are only intensified by methods of representation that overturn mimetic conventions. But if one pole of this study is the scandal, then its opposite is the sublime. Bernstein examines the parodic mode of the dandy and moves to the serious urban sublime that records urban experience in its ambiguity, its narcissism, its negativity, and its strength. Bernstein then discusses fictional and nonfictional urban sketches that present many of the problems facing urban artists in their encounters with the city. She stakes out new territory, blending the work of major critics of Victorian literature (Steven Marcus, Hillis Miller, etc.), lesser-known nineteenth-century urban texts, and a substantial dosage of Continental materials, ranging from the crucial work of Baudelaire and his great expositor, Walter Benjamin, to theorists such as Freud, Bakhtin, Foucault, Barthes, and Lacan.

Gender, Work, and Economy: Unpacking the Global Economy

Gender, Work, and Economy: Unpacking the Global Economy

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gottfried, Heidi, PUBLISHER: Polity Press, This engaging new text uses a feminist lens to crack open the often hidden worlds of gender and work, addressing enduring questions about how structural inequalities are produced and why they persist. Making visible the social relationships that drive the global economy, the book explores how economic transformations not only change the way we work, but how we live our lives. The full extent of changing patterns of employment and the current financial crisis cannot be fully understood in the confines of narrow conceptions of work and economy. Feminists address this shortcoming by developing both a theory and a political movement aimed at unveiling the power relations inherent in old and new forms of work. By providing an analysis of gender, work, and the economy, Heidi Gottfried brings to light the many faces of power from the bedroom to the boardroom. A discussion of globalization is threaded throughout the book to uncover the impact of increasing global interconnections, and vivid case studies are included, from industrialized countries such as the US and the global cities of New York, London, and Tokyo, as well as from developing countries and the emerging global cities of Beijing, Shanghai, and Dubai. This comprehensive analysis of gender and work in a global economy, incorporating sociology, geography, and political economy perspectives, will be a valued companion to students in gender studies and across the social sciences more generally.

Window Shopping: Cinema and the Postmodern

Window Shopping: Cinema and the Postmodern

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Friedberg, Anne, PUBLISHER: University of California Press, Departing from those who define postmodernism in film merely as a visual style or set of narrative conventions, Anne Friedberg develops the first sustained account of the cinema's role in postmodern culture. She explores the ways in which nineteenth-century visual experiences--photography, urban strolling, panorama and diorama entertainments--anticipate contemporary pleasures provided by cinema, video, shopping malls, and emerging "virtual reality" technologies. Comparing the visual practices of shopping, tourism, and film-viewing, Friedberg identifies the experience of "virtual" mobility through time and space as a key determinant of postmodern cultural identity. Evaluating the theories of Jameson, Lyotard, Baudrillard, and others, she adds critical insights about the role of gender and gender mobility in the configurations of consumer culture. A strikingly original work, "Window Shopping" challenges many of the existing assumptions about what exactly "post"modern is. This book marks the emergence of a compelling new voice in the study of contemporary culture.
