The Short Story: The Reality of Artifice

The Short Story: The Reality of Artifice

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: May, Charles E., PUBLISHER: Routledge, The short story is one of the most difficult types of prose to write and one of the most pleasurable to read. From Boccaccio's Decameron to The Collected Stories of Reynolds Price, Charles May gives us an understanding of the history and structure of this demanding form of fiction. Beginning with a general history of the genre, he moves on to focus on the nineteenth-century when the modern short story began to come into focus. From there he moves on to later nineteenth-century realism and early twentieth-century formalism and finally to the modern renaissance of the form that shows no signs of abating. A chronology of significant events, works and figures from the genre's history, notes and references and an extensive bibliographic essay with recommended reading round out the volume.

Grand Parenting: Finding Roots and Wings for an Open Choice

Grand Parenting: Finding Roots and Wings for an Open Choice

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Faust, Ron, PUBLISHER: Leathers Publishing, Grandparents are one of life's greatest blessings - they make life easier. And with the capacity to save us from the destruction and harshness of life, grandparents are a vital part of our extended family. Grand Parenting: Finding Roots and Wings for an Open Choice Generation, just released by Leathers Publishing, explores the part grandparents play in child development and offers a new perspective on their role in child rearing. In the book, author Dr. Ron Faust looks at the spiritual I.Q. (S.Q) of children. By his definition, the S.Q. measures the child's ability to engage in peacemaking and justice issues. Faust says this is where grandparents can help deepen the spiritual quest. He points out in the book that the link between values and grand parenting is the key to unlocking the hope for a new ethical generation. Grand Parenting: Finding Roots and Wings for an Open Choice Generation shows how open-minded grandparents can use the benefits of "Open Choice Parenting" to boost the S.Q. scores for future generations.

Roots of North Indian Shi'ism in Iran and Iraq: Religion and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cole, Juan / Cole, J. R. I., PUBLISHER: University of California Press, In this pioneering study of the Twelver Shi'i branch of Islam prevalent in Iraq and Iran, J. R. I. Cole traces the influence of Shi'i rule on the development of religious communalism and conflict in the North Indian State of Awadh (Oudh). He also examines the relationship of the Shi'i clergy to the state and the clerical reaction to British imperialism and capitalism. Based on research in rare manuscripts and in archives, the book reveals that the Shi'i clergy advocated policies that caused resentment among Sunnis and Hindus, thereby promoting religious communalism and setting the stage for modern communal conflict. The Shi'i learned men took government posts in support of Awadh's Shi'i nawabs and shahs; Awadh state support, in turn, helped transform Shi'ism from a persecuted "sect" to a dominant, if still minority, religious establishment. Sociologically, the book draws attention to the specific role of the state in defining "sect" and "church." It also argues the importance of class divisions within the Shi'i community, showing that the dominant clerical ideology was often not accepted by the laboring strata. Cole's study supports the view that Muslim communalism in Northern India had genuine historical roots and was not simply an elite strategy of modern Muslim politicians. Contrary to the arguments of some writers and to the image projected by Iran's current ayatullahs, he claims that most Shi'i clergy did not play a role of opposition to the state.

Drifting Continents and Shifting Theories: The Modern

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Le Grand, H. E., PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, This innovative book uses the story of how a modern science achieved its present shape and focus to introduce the question of the nature of scientific change and its philosophical analysis. The "modern revolution in geology" of the s and s saw the triumph of the global theory of plate tectonics, and decisive turning point in fifty years' controversy and competition first sparked in by Wegener's proposal of continenta drift. Here, Professor Le Grand interweaves a history of this episode of scientific change with reflective discussions of its historical, philosophical, and social circumstances, and of the development of science more generally. The approach of the book is exploratory; the reader is encouraged to be an active participant--to use the historical narrative to understand and criticize some of the more recent, influential ideas about science and scientists, to draw conclusions, and especially to pose questions about how and why changes occur in scientific knowledge and practice.
