The Siege of Derry

The Siege of Derry

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Macrory, Patrick, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, This book traces the events surrounding the siege of Londonderry by Catholic soldiers, the siege that Macaulay was to call "the most memorable in the annals of the British Isles." Macrory draws on a wide range of sources to chart the origins of the conflict--the Tyrone wars, the Plantation of Ulster, the Catholic rising of , and Cromwell's retribution at Brogheda and Wexford--and vividly recounts the siege itself, stressing throughout how many of the problems Ulster faces today have their roots in the 17th century and before.

The Many Faces of Islam: Perspectives on a Resurgent

The Many Faces of Islam: Perspectives on a Resurgent

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rejwan, Nissim, PUBLISHER: University Press of Florida, Written in a style easily accessible to both students and general readers, The Many Faces of Islam offers a wide range of perspectives on modern Islamic culture and religious practice. Seeking to dispel the perception that Islamic fundamentalism and extremism represent Islam in its entirety, Nissim Rejwan surveys the issues and provides numerous excerpts from modern writers and scholars, Muslim and non-Muslim, summarizing the many problems and dilemmas facing contemporary Muslims. Rejwan argues that to view Islam as uniform and all of a piece invites confusion and miscomprehension. The rich sampling of readings amplifies the summary discussion and demonstrates the surprising variety of Islamic concepts and practices. Issues include the uniqueness of Islam, the decline of the Islamic establishment, the impact of modernity, misunderstandings of Islam, Islam and the Dhimmis, the fundamentalist revival, and more. With a novel, topical approach to his subject, Rejwan widens the view of Islam from radicalism to the culture as a whole. His combination of topical summary and illuminating, balanced texts will provide a useful resource for students of Islamic culture and, for general readers, an insightful, balanced, and engaging introduction to a poorly understood but increasingly important civilization.

Storyville, USA

Storyville, USA

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Peterson, Dale, PUBLISHER: University of Georgia Press, What is a Storyville? Whether you're in Toast, North Carolina, Monkeys Eyebrow, Kentucky, or Winner, South Dakota, a Storyville is a real town you can find on a map, with a tale behind its quirky name. Covering miles of U.S. roads, Dale Peterson drove with his kids, Britt and Bayne, from Start, Louisiana, to Deadhorse, Alaska, in search of small-town America in the "garage sale of the open highway." Along the way they explored open spaces, wild places, and country back roads and met people who weren't afraid to talk to one another. Together, they discover the sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and zany stories behind nearly sixty small towns, guided by a AAA Road Atlas, expert local storytellers, and lots of curiosity. They dip into Caddo Lake and the everglades of Uncertain, Texas, go a little crazy in Loco, Oklahoma, and learn about bee colonies in Climax, New York. Conversations with townfolk range from the refrigerator at the center of Noodle, Texas, and the hazards of Accident, Maryland, to issues of civil rights, religion, and environmental preservation. Collected here are the landscapes, landmarks, faces, thoughts, and conversations of a sentimental, idiosyncratic, and often hilarious American odyssey. Storyville, USA is a long winding trip into the back roads of the country and a longer one into the hinterland of our own hearts.

Jazz Masters of the Fifties

Jazz Masters of the Fifties

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Goldberg, Joe, PUBLISHER: Da Capo Press, The fifties, though a quiescent period in many ways, was one of the most fervent decades in jazz history. The landmarks of modern jazz were firmly planted and, it could be argued, nearly all directions the music has taken since then can be charted back to recordings, groups, or individuals from this era. In this series of profiles, Joe Goldberg examines the lives and the music, the crucial events and dominant forces of a decade of great music and conflicting esthetics: Miles Davis's recording of "Kind of Blue;" Gerry Mulligan's pianoless quartet; Cecil Taylor's percussive keyboard experiments; John Coltrane's and Sonny Rollins's marathon saxophone solos; MJQ's blending of classical structure and jazz improvisation; Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz. From Mingus to Monk to Blakey, it was an age of giants. Perhaps never before or since in jazz history have so many wildly idiosyncratic jazz innovators been contemporaries. Joe Goldberg was there and what his ears heard has become here a lasting music document. Acquista Ora

Goodbyes and Other Messages: A Journal of Jazz,

Goodbyes and Other Messages: A Journal of Jazz,

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Balliett, Whitney, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Whitney Balliett's new book contains many of the shorter pieces he has done for The New Yorker during the past ten years. (The pieces on the pianist Bill Evans and on the classic CBS television show, "The Sound of Jazz," have not been published before.) Balliett gives brilliant final summings-up of many of the irreplaceable musicians who died in the eighties, among them Count Basie, Earl Hines, Thelonious Monk, Buddy Rich, Sarah Vaughan, and Cootie Williams. But he also offers penetrating assessements of young turks like Michael Petrucciani, Warren Vache, Howard Alden, and Wynton Marsalis. Jazz is passing through a recollective period, and Balliett takes long looks at the great Blue Note, Keynote, and Commodore reissue programs, the new jazz repertory groups, and the ambitious and wayward Grove Dictionary of Jazz. He puts his elegant glass on a Caribbean jazz cruise, on several different festivals, on the sad dissolution of the marvelous Gene Bertoncini-Michael Moore duo, and on the strange career of Miles Davis. And he gives us definitive essays on Bunny Berigan, Duke Ellington, John Hammond, Benny Goodman, Ben Webster, and the early lyrical jazz writer Otis Ferguson. Jazz fans and jazz musicians read Balliett because of his unrivalled ability to convey in words the very sound of their music. But people who don't know beans about jazz read him simply to relish his elegant and beautiful prose.

The Magic of the Many: Josiah Quincy and the Rise of Mass

The Magic of the Many: Josiah Quincy and the Rise of Mass

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Crocker, Matthew H., PUBLISHER: University of Massachusetts Press, A study of partisan politics and class conflict in early nineteenth-century Boston, this book traces the history of a popular revolt against an entrenched ruling elite. Led by an unlikely populist, patrician Josiah Quincy, the rebellion against the reigning Federalist party not only altered the political landscape of Boston but also signalled the advent of the Jacksonian Age. According to Matthew H. Crocker, Boston in the early republic was a city divided by opposing conceptions of democracy. While the Federalist elite struggled to uphold traditional notions of deference to authority, anti-Federalist insurgents rejected the idea of hierarchy and embraced a commitment to political equality. The challenge to the established order eventually coalesced around Josiah Quincy, who reversed his longstanding political loyalties and forged a popular coalition that broke the hegemony of the Federalist party. Elected in as Boston's second mayor, Quincy dominated the city's politics for nearly a decade before the people who had brought him to power turned against him. In the end, Crocker argues, Quincy and the insurgency he led left an ambiguous legacy. On the one hand, as Boston's "Great Mayor, " Quincy established himself as one of the nineteenth century's most powerful and dictatorial city executives. On the other, the populist movement that toppled the Federalist party in Boston presaged a new kind of American politics that would soon spread throughout the nation.

The Guns of Ticonderoga

The Guns of Ticonderoga

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Richardson, William T., PUBLISHER: Trafford Publishing, This is a fictional story, based on fact, of two l3 year old boys who join their fathers in assisting Henry Knox and the citizens of the frontier and the colonial militia in delivering Fort Ticonderoga cannon to George Washinglon and his troops in Boston. While the account of the boys' adventures enroute is fiction, they are representative of the type of experiences many young people had in growing up and assuming adult responsibilities while living on the frontier of early America. In November George Washington and his militia had the British forces in Boston, MA blockaded from the mainland. The British did not have sufficient forces in Boston to break the blockade. Washington did not have sufficient heavy weapons (cannon and mortars) to force the British to leave Boston. It was a stalemate. Henry Knox and his brother William volunteered to bring some of the heavy weapons from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston. Washington agreed, and with the assistance provided by General Phillip Schuyler at Albany, NY the Knox expedition moved pounds cannon and mortars across lakes, rivers, streams and mountains during the winter of . When the weapons arrived, Washington placed them in a strategic location overlooking Boston and its harbor, thereby convincing the British in March to evacuate Boston. The result was that Boston and New England remained in the hands of the Americans throughout the Revolutionary War. The success of the Knox expedition and its result for the outcome of the American Revolution is little known but deserves the attention provided here and elsewhere. This book is a good read for anyone who is interested in the contributions young citizens made tothe success of the American Revolution.
