Lectures on Ethics, : John Dewey

Lectures on Ethics, : John Dewey

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Dewey, John / Koch, Donald F., PUBLISHER: Southern Illinois University Press, Donald F. Koch supplies the only extant complete transcription of the annual three-course sequence on ethics Dewey gave at the University of Chicago from to . Koch argues that these lectures offer the best systematic, overall introduction to Dewey's approach to moral philosophy and are the only account showing the unity of his views in nearly all phases of ethical inquiry. These lectures are the only work by Dewey to set forth a complete theory of moral language. They offer a clear illustration of the central methodological questions in the development of a pragmatic instrumentalist ethic and the actual working out of the instrumentalist approach as distinct from simply presenting it as a conclusion.

The Challenge of Islam: The Prophetic Tradition, Lectures,

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Brown, Norman O. / Neu, Jerome / Simpson, Mathew E., PUBLISHER: North Atlantic Books, "The Prophetic Tradition: The Challenge of Islam "is an enlightening set of lectures given by Norman O. Brown during the s, exploring a wide-ranging array of topics concerning Islam. Brown reveals the overlooked relationship between Islam and early Christianity, exploring Islam's relation to, and revision of, the Christian tradition, the literary innovation of the Qu'ran, the nature of revolutionary and political Islam, and the vision of a world civilization. Throughout these lectures, which are remarkably pertinent today, Brown seeks to educate the reader on misunderstood areas of Islam, including the split between the Sunni and Shi'ite sects and Islam's exemplification of the broad themes of art and imagination in human life. The author's world-historical perspective of religion and tradition gives readers a crucial alternative to the divisive "clash of civilizations" view that paints Islam as at odds with the West. He exposes the unifying strands between Islam and early Judeo-Christian doctrine, showing that Islam is in fact a genuine part of "Western" tradition, and more importantly, part of a global tradition that embraces us all.

Stories, Theories and Things

Stories, Theories and Things

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Brooke-Rose, Christine / Brooke-Rose, Christine / Christine, Brooke-Rose, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, The novelist and critic Christine Brooke-Rose reflects on her own fictional craft and turns her well-developed analytic abilities on other writers fictional and critical, from Hawthorne and Pound to Bloom and Derrida, in an attempt to investigate those difficult border zones between the "invented" and the "real." The result is an extended meditation, in a highly personal idiom, on the creative act and its relation to modern theoretical writing and thinking. Like her fiction, Professor Brooke-Rose's criticism is self-consciously experimental, trying out and discarding ideas, adopting others. Her linguistic prowess, her uncommon role as a recognized writer of fiction and theory, and the relevance of her work to the feminist and other modern movements, all contribute to the interest of this unusual sequence of essays. Christine Brooke-Rose, formerly a professor at the Universite de Paris, and now retired, lives in France. She is the author of several works of literary criticism and a number of novels, including Amalgamemnon and Xorander.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: More, Thomas, PUBLISHER: 1st World Library, Purchase one of 1st World Library's Classic Books and help support our free internet library of downloadable eBooks. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - Sir Thomas More, son of Sir John More, a justice of the King's Bench, was born in , in Milk Street, in the city of London. After his earlier education at St. Anthony's School, in Threadneedle Street, he was placed, as a boy, in the household of Cardinal John Morton, Archbishop of Canterbury and Lord Chancellor. It was not unusual for persons of wealth or influence and sons of good families to be so established together in a relation of patron and client. The youth wore his patron's livery, and added to his state. The patron used, afterwards, his wealth or influence in helping his young client forward in the world. Cardinal Morton had been in earlier days that Bishop of Ely whom Richard III. sent to the Tower; was busy afterwards in hostility to Richard; and was a chief adviser of Henry VII., who in made him Archbishop of Canterbury, and nine months afterwards Lord Chancellor. Cardinal Morton - of talk at whose table there are recollections in "Utopia" - delighted in the quick wit of young Thomas More. He once said, "Whoever shall live to try it, shall see this child here waiting at table prove a notable and rare man." At the age of about nineteen, Thomas More was sent to Canterbury College, Oxford, by his patron, where he learnt Greek of the first men who brought Greek studies from Italy to England - William Grocyn and Thomas Linacre. Linacre, a physician, who afterwards took orders, was also the founder of the College of Physicians. In , More left Oxford to study law in London, at Lincoln's Inn, and in the nextyear Archbishop Morton died.
