The Tales of the Heike

The Tales of the Heike

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Shirane, Haruo / Watson, Burton, PUBLISHER: Columbia University Press, "The Tales of the Heike" is one of the most influential works in Japanese literature and culture, remaining even today a crucial source for fiction, drama, and popular media. Originally written in the mid-thirteenth century, it features a cast of vivid characters and chronicles the epic Genpei war, a civil conflict that marked the end of the power of the Heike and changed the course of Japanese history. "The Tales of the Heike" focuses on the lives of both the samurai warriors who fought for two powerful twelfth-century Japanese clans-the Heike (Taira) and the Genji (Minamoto)-and the women with whom they were intimately connected. "The Tales of the Heike" provides a dramatic window onto the emerging world of the medieval samurai and recounts in absorbing detail the chaos of the battlefield, the intrigue of the imperial court, and the gradual loss of a courtly tradition. The book is also highly religious and Buddhist in its orientation, taking up such issues as impermanence, karmic retribution, attachment, and renunciation, which dominated the Japanese imagination in the medieval period. In this new, abridged translation, Burton Watson offers a gripping rendering of the work's most memorable episodes. Particular to this translation are the introduction by Haruo Shirane, the woodblock illustrations, a glossary of characters, and an extended bibliography.

Men of Letters, Writing Lives

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Broughton, Trev Lynn, PUBLISHER: Routledge, Trev Lynn Broughton takes an in-depth look at the developments within Victorian auto/biography, and asks what we can learn about the conditions and limits of male literary authority. Providing a feminist analysis of the effects of this literary production on culture, Broughton looks at the increase in professions with a vested interest in the written Life; the speeding up of the Life-and-Letters industry during this period; the institutionalization of Life-writing; and the consequent spread of a network of mainly male practitioners and commentators. This study focuses on two case studies from the period : the theories and achievements of Sir Leslie Stephen and the debate surrounding James Anthony Froude's account of the marriage of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle.

The reader is provided with what is known about the city of Ephesus, its people, and its place within the larger framework of ancient and medieval Mediterranean history. Beginning with the Ionian migration and the founding of Ephesus on the west coast of Asia Minor around B.C., the story moves quickly through periods when the city was ruled successively by local tyrants, Persian kings and satraps, Athenian and Spartan generals, Antigonid, Ptolemaic and Seleucid kings, Roman emperors and Pergamene dynasts, Byzantine emperors and Greek patriarchs, Arab caliphs, Latin popes and crusaders, Seljuk and Beylik Turks, Mongols, and ending with the conquest by the Ottoman Turks in A.D. . Throughout emphasis has been placed on the lives of Ephesian individuals and groups, and their respective contributions to architecture, law, literature, painting, medicine, philosophy, poetry, politics, religion and sculpture, often at times characterized by political and territorial power struggles and ecclesiastical doctrinal controversies and disagreements. The history of Ephesus is of ongoing interest to historians, archaeologists and students of classical literature, science, religion and philosophy, as well as to amateurs and laymen who are keenly interested in Mediterranian antiquity. It is documented with excerpts, biographical references, explanatory footnotes and a few illustrations.

Nature's Workshop: Renoirs Writings on the Decorative Arts

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Herbert, Robert L., PUBLISHER: Yale University Press, This book shows Auguste Renoir in an entirely new light, revealing an artist far more complex and thoughtful than previously believed. Seven unknown and unpublished texts written by Renoir, along with four other writings once published but now largely forgotten, are presented here in both French and English. They identify Renoir as an impassioned critic of architecture, architectural decoration, and the education of artists. These surprising texts were written in , when Renoir hoped to found an exhibition society grouping all the crafts, and around , when he prepared several drafts of a preface to a French translation of Cennino Cennini's medieval treatise on the arts. Robert L. Herbert has uncovered Renoir's "Grammar of Art", long believed lost, and has disproved the idea that his reading of Cennini was related to his trip to Italy in . Renoir provides a walking tour of Paris with abundant references to specific buildings exhibiting the Second Empire architecture he found so despicable. He examines academic art, modern industry, and how together they undermine the values of craft and individuality. And he insists that good art like nature never achieves perfect geometry or symmetry but is unregimented, "natural". Herbert discusses Renoir's aesthetic in the context of the flow of ideas on the decorative arts at the time and reassesses the artist in the light of these lively rediscovered writings.

Urbino: The Story of a Renaissance City

Urbino: The Story of a Renaissance City

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Osborne, June / Cornish, Joe / Mortimer, John Clifford, PUBLISHER: University of Chicago Press, During the Renaissance, the Italian city of Urbino rivaled Florence and Siena as a center of art, culture, and commerce. Chances are you've never heard of it--but you should have. Raphael was born there. Piero della Francesca painted his famous "The Flagellation" there. And the city's exquisite Ducal Palace, its twin towers piercing the sky, remains a striking monument to grace and power. Yet despite all its past glory and present charm, Urbino is practically unknown to tourists today. With "Urbino: The Story of a Renaissance City," art historian June Osborne brings to life not only the great city and its art but also its turbulent history and the intrigue surrounding its ruling family. First settled by the ancient Umbrians, Urbino reached its zenith during the fifteenth century under the rule of Duke Federico da Montefeltro and his son Guidobaldo. Federico may have been a usurper and a fierce, opportunistic warlord, but his lust for power was more than matched by his passion for great art. Indeed it was under his direct guidance that the magnificent Ducal Palace was built--its perfectly proportioned courtyard a wonder of early Renaissance architecture. Today the Ducal Palace hosts the National Gallery of the Marches, one of the most important art galleries in Italy, featuring works by no lesser lights than Raphael, Uccello, Piero della Francesca, and Titian. Exploring such sites as the fourteenth-century Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista and the Gothic Church of San Domenico, Osborne captures not only the startling beauty of Urbino and the Apennine foothills but also the tumultuous legacy of Frederico and his son (and their many wives and courtiers). With over a hundred lavish color photographs, many by renowned landscape photographer Joe Cornish, "Urbino" is the best--and the only--guide to this gem of the Italian Marches.

Poem of the Cid

Poem of the Cid

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Blackburn, Paul / Economou, George / Cortest, Luis, PUBLISHER: University of Oklahoma Press, Few works have shaped a national literature as thoroughly as the "Poem of the Cid" has shaped the Spanish literary tradition. Tracing the life of the eleventh-century military commander Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, called the Cid (from the Arabic Sayyidi, "My Lord"), this medieval epic describes a series of events surrounding his exile. The text of the poem survives in only one early thirteenth-century manuscript copied by a single scribe, yet centuries later the figure of the Cid still was celebrated in the Spanish popular ballad tradition. Today almost every theme that characterizes Spanish literature -- honor, justice, loyalty, treachery, and jealousy -- derives from the "Poem of the Cid". Restored by poet and medievalist George Economou, this elegant and spirited translation by Paul Blackburn is judged by many the finest English translation of a great medieval poem.

Room for Manoeuvre: The Role of Intertext in Elfriede

Room for Manoeuvre: The Role of Intertext in Elfriede

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Symons, Morwenna, PUBLISHER: Modern Humanities Research Association, In the structuring of literary texts that refer extensively to previous texts, one issue is paramount: the space accorded to the reader. In entering into the intertextual debate, the reader is called upon both to corroborate the authority of the text and the power of literary continuity that the intertext embodies, and to assert his or her independence from this same authority in the very act of responding individually to its multiple significations. This study of four literary texts, all very distinct in form and method, analyses the dynamic relationship between reader, text and intertext and suggests that it is in the effectiveness of this manoeuvring, by and of the reader, that the intertextual narrative can be shown to find its force. In Jelineks Die Klavierspielerin the pornographic, psychoanalytic and musical intertexts form a discursive nexus of effects, central to the construction of a highly ironic narrative voice that unsettles and energizes the reader into critical response. The intertextual game of Ein weites Feld creates a text that is structurally and thematically out of control: by this means Grass brings the reader into confrontation with the celebratory discourses of German reunification. Herta Mullers depiction of the village idyll in Niederungen embraces and disrupts the Heimat genre. The quotational mode, and our discomfort in responding to it, allows for the critical articulation of questions of authority and control with which the stories are concerned, while Mullers use of a Calvino intertext in Reisende auf einem Bein is fundamental in the development of a central character whose elusive quality reflects (on) thematic issues addressed by the text.

Daily Life in the Medieval Islamic World

Daily Life in the Medieval Islamic World

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lindsay, James E., PUBLISHER: Hackett Publishing Company, From the time of its birth in Mecca in the 7th century C.E., Islam and the Islamic world rapidly expanded outward, extending to Spain and West Africa in the west, and to Central Asia and the Indian Subcontinent in the east. An examination of the daily life in these Islamic regions provides insight into a civilized, powerful, and economically stable culture, where large metropolitan centers such as Damascus, Baghdad, and Cairo thrived in many areas, including intellectual and scientific inquiry. In contrast with medieval Europe, there is little common knowledge in the West of the culture and history of this vibrant world, as different from our own in terms of the political, religious, and social values it possessed, as it is similar in terms of the underlying human situation that supports such values. This book provides an intimate look into the daily life of the medieval Islamic world, and is thus an invaluable resource for students and general readers alike interested in understanding this world, so different, and yet so connected, to our own. Chapters include discussions of: the major themes of medieval Islamic history; Arabia, the world of Islamic origins; warfare and politics; the major cities of Damascus, Baghdad, and Cairo; religious rituals and worship; and a section on "curious and entertaining information." Author James E. Lindsay further provides a focused look at the daily lives of urban Muslims during this time period, and of their interactions with Jews, Christians and other Muslims. Timelines, tables (including a calendar conversion to align the Islamic lunar and the Christian solar dates, and a dynastic table highlighting the major genealogies of the ancient rulingfamilies), a bibliography, and a glossary of important dates and technical terms are also provided to assist the reader.

Son of Man: The Mystical Way to Christ

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Harvey, Andrew / Hamut, Eryk / Hanut, Eryk, PUBLISHER: Putnam Publishing Group, Son of Man is both a celebration of the mystical Christ and a practical guidebook to contacting Christ and experiencing what St. Paul called "the glorious liberty of the children of God". The New York Times recently wrote, "The spirit that moves Andrew Harvey is gaining him literary acclaim". In his long-awaited major new book, Son of Man, Harvey explores the sacred feminine aspects of Jesus. He explains that Christ came to help release humanity from all bonds of false authority and to reveal to people their own divine identity, thereby awakening all to the freedom, dignity, and joy that is within them. In the second section, Harvey offers transformative ways of realizing the power of Christ. These practices are drawn from the early Christian traditions of mantra, medieval mystic devotional practices, the vision of prayer of Teresa of Avila, and based upon the author's own experiences of the meditation and visualization practices of Hinduism, Sufism, and Tibetan Buddhism. A section of meditations and readings at the end -- including recently discovered Gnostic gospels -- complete the readers full experience in the mystical Christ. A beautiful volume of text and photographs, Son of Man will help us enter into a union with Christ as he becomes the "source and principle of divine life" (Thomas Merton) within us. Index.
