The Poetics of Derek Walcott: Intertextual Perspectives

The Poetics of Derek Walcott: Intertextual Perspectives

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Davis, Gregson, PUBLISHER: Duke University Press, The essays collected in this issue offer complementary critical perspectives on the mature lyric work of Derek Walcott, the acclaimed Nobel laureate from the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. The centerpiece of the ensemble is a previously unpublished essay in which Walcott's reflections on poetics illuminate his project in the masterpiece, "Omeros." Other contributions by literary scholars in North America and the Caribbean focus on fundamental dimensions of Walcott's craft and on such thematic preoccupations as the intersection of pictorial and verbal modes of representation, the deployment of nuanced intertextual strategies (especially in relation to the Greco-Roman canon), the invention of a viable artistic identity in a postcolonial intercultural milieu, and the psychosocial modeling of the process of literary apprenticeship. Zero's Neighbour: Sam Beckett

Zero's Neighbour: Sam Beckett

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cixous, Helene / Milesi, Laurent, PUBLISHER: Polity Press, "Zero's Neighbour" is Helene Cixous's tribute to the minimalist genius of the artist in exile who courted nothingness in his writing like nobody else: Samuel Beckett. In this unabashedly personal odyssey through a sizeable range of his novels, plays and poems, Cixous celebrates Beckett's linguistic flair and the poignant, powerful thrust of his stylistic terseness, and passionately declares her love for his unrivalled expression of the meaningless 'precious little' of life, its unfathomable banality ending in chaos and death. Poised between a critical essay and a textual performance across two languages adapting Beckett's own literary vein, this book will appeal to scholars, critics and creative writers as well as students of the 'grey self-Sam'. Its allusive intertextual insights will also prove to be of critical relevance to readers of Dante and Proust, among other literary figures, as much as to those appreciative of Cixous's own inimitable genius for dissecting the quintessence of the life and works of a 'neighbourly' artist.

Critical Essays, Volume I: Ancient Orators. Lysias.

Critical Essays, Volume I: Ancient Orators. Lysias.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Dionysius of Halicarnassus / Dionysius / Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Of Halicarnassus, PUBLISHER: Harvard University Press, Dionysius of Halicarnassus had migrated to Rome by 30 BCE, where he lived until his death some time after 8 BCE, writing his "Roman Antiquities" and teaching the art of rhetoric and literary composition. Dionysius's purpose, both in his own work and in his teaching, was to re-establish the classical Attic standards of purity, invention and taste in order to reassert the primacy of Greek as the literary language of the Mediterranean world. He advocated the minute study of the styles of the finest prose authors of the fifth and fourth century BCE, especially the Attic orators. His critical essays on these and on the historian Thucydides represent an important development from the somewhat mechanical techniques of rhetorical handbooks to a more sensitive criticism of individual authors. Illustrating his analysis with well-chosen examples, Dionysius preserves a number of important fragments of Lysias and Isaeus. The essays on those two orators and on Isocrates, Demosthenes and Thucydides comprise Volume I of this edition. Volume II contains three letters to his students; a short essay on the orator Dinarchus; and his finest work, the essay "On Literary Composition, " which combines rhetoric, grammar and criticism in a manner unique in ancient literature. The Loeb Classical Library also publishes a seven volume edition of "Roman Antiquities, " by Dionysius of Halicarnassus, a history from earliest times to 264 BCE.

French Renaissance Tragedy

French Renaissance Tragedy

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Jondorf, Gillian, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, Gillian Jondorf challenges the traditional critical approaches to French Renaissance theater, reevaluating its literary merit and originality. She shows how playwrights of the sixteenth century actually achieved an originality by introducing classical themes, breaking with the medieval tradition of religious and morality plays. Whereas many critics have considered writers of French Renaissance drama as mere forerunners of the more famous seventeenth-century writers such as Molie re or Racine, Jondorf argues that these plays should be seen as competent and skillfully-composed in their own right. This book will appeal to students of Renaissance literature and European drama, as well as those interested in questions of originality and literary influence.

Literary Presentations of Divided Germany: The Development

Literary Presentations of Divided Germany: The Development

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hutchinson, Peter / Hutchinson, Allen Ed., PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, This book was the first full-length of East German fiction to appear in English. It takes as its subject the political division of Germany into two increasingly incompatible states, and it concentrates on East German fiction for the simple reason that West German writers are ignorant of one of the most significant events of modern history. After dealing with various historical, bibliographical and cultural problems, Dr Hutchinson isolates three narrative devices of particular value to East German writers: creating a discriminating East German visitor to the West who reinforces the standard image of the capitalist world; introducing figures who are representative of each German state; and examining the two states in terms of their relationship with the Third Reich. A conclusion surveys changes in the literary image of Germany's division between and , and compares East German works on the subject with the few written in the West.

Men of Letters, Writing Lives

Men of Letters, Writing Lives

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Broughton, Trev Lynn, PUBLISHER: Routledge, Trev Lynn Broughton takes an in-depth look at the developments within Victorian auto/biography, and asks what we can learn about the conditions and limits of male literary authority. Providing a feminist analysis of the effects of this literary production on culture, Broughton looks at the increase in professions with a vested interest in the written Life; the speeding up of the Life-and-Letters industry during this period; the institutionalization of Life-writing; and the consequent spread of a network of mainly male practitioners and commentators. This study focuses on two case studies from the period : the theories and achievements of Sir Leslie Stephen and the debate surrounding James Anthony Froude's account of the marriage of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle.

Room for Manoeuvre: The Role of Intertext in Elfriede

Room for Manoeuvre: The Role of Intertext in Elfriede

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Symons, Morwenna, PUBLISHER: Modern Humanities Research Association, In the structuring of literary texts that refer extensively to previous texts, one issue is paramount: the space accorded to the reader. In entering into the intertextual debate, the reader is called upon both to corroborate the authority of the text and the power of literary continuity that the intertext embodies, and to assert his or her independence from this same authority in the very act of responding individually to its multiple significations. This study of four literary texts, all very distinct in form and method, analyses the dynamic relationship between reader, text and intertext and suggests that it is in the effectiveness of this manoeuvring, by and of the reader, that the intertextual narrative can be shown to find its force. In Jelineks Die Klavierspielerin the pornographic, psychoanalytic and musical intertexts form a discursive nexus of effects, central to the construction of a highly ironic narrative voice that unsettles and energizes the reader into critical response. The intertextual game of Ein weites Feld creates a text that is structurally and thematically out of control: by this means Grass brings the reader into confrontation with the celebratory discourses of German reunification. Herta Mullers depiction of the village idyll in Niederungen embraces and disrupts the Heimat genre. The quotational mode, and our discomfort in responding to it, allows for the critical articulation of questions of authority and control with which the stories are concerned, while Mullers use of a Calvino intertext in Reisende auf einem Bein is fundamental in the development of a central character whose elusive quality reflects (on) thematic issues addressed by the text.
