Earth's Mind: Essays in Native Literature

Earth's Mind: Essays in Native Literature

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Dunsmore, Roger / Edrington / Curtus, PUBLISHER: University of New Mexico Press, These thirteen essays reflect Dunsmore's broad experience as a poet, student of native literature, and teacher. They take their inspiration from Chief Joseph's statement that "the Earth and myself are of one mind," and go on to consider Black Elk; the work of D'Arcy McNickle, Simon Ortiz, and Laurens van der Post; Salish stories; and Pueblo sacred clowns. The idea that mind is something larger and more pervasive in nature than the Western tradition has usually considered suggests respect as central to survival and conveys the essential wildness of mind. "Earth's Mind" will be useful to those who study or teach native literature or who simply want to understand better native world views. "The most original and evocative study of Native American literary accomplishments, and their sources, it has been my pleasure to read in several years."--Karl Kroeber, Mellon Professor in the Humanities, Columbia University

Le Mystere Des Cathedrales Et L'Interpretation Esoterique

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fulcanelli, PUBLISHER: Martino Fine Books, Reprint of Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Profusely illustrated with 35 full page illustrations. Until recently an appreciation of Fulcanelli's 'The Mystery of the Cathredals' has been restricted to a few esotoric circles. Fulcanelli himself remains something of an enigma. Born in Paris circa , Fulcanelli's magnum opus was first published in in a limited edition of 300 copies. It has attracted interest ever since - even though viewed askance by the more orthodox interpreters of Church history and architecture. Fulcanelli's book celebrates the 'hermetic' or 'masonic' mysteries enshrined in the great European cathedrals at once concealed and revealed within the very facade of stone text. Fulcanelli devotes much attention to the facade of the Notre Dame de Paris, but what he had to say is true of all great European cathedrals, designed and built by master-masons who had access to the hermetic tradition.

Specials

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Westerfeld, Scott, PUBLISHER: Simon Pulse, "Special Circumstances": The words have sent chills down Tally's spine since her days as a repellent, rebellious ugly. Back then Specials were a sinister rumor -- frighteningly beautiful, dangerously strong, breathtakingly fast. Ordinary pretties might live their whole lives without meeting a Special. But Tally's never been ordinary. And now she's been turned into one of them: a superamped fighting machine, engineered to keep the uglies down and the pretties stupid. The strength, the speed, and the clarity and focus of her thinking feel better than anything Tally can remember. Most of the time. One tiny corner of her heart still remembers something more. Still, it's easy to tune that out -- until Tally's offered a chance to stamp out the rebels of the New Smoke permanently. It all comes down to one last choice: listen to that tiny, faint heartbeat, or carry out the mission she's programmed to complete. Either way, Tally's world will never be the same.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lo, Malinda, PUBLISHER: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, Reese and David don't remember what happened to them after a bird flew into their headlights on the Extraterrestrial Highway--not the resulting car accident and certainly not a bit of the 21 days of care at the military hospital in Nevada. It's a good thing, the doctors and colonels tell them, that they crashed on a military base, but they won't tell Reese and David what the extent of their injuries were, or how they were healed. They do tell them they're not going home, though, until they sign a confidentiality agreement. When they get home, Reese can't help but find everything a little weird. Worldwide bird strikes resulting in plane crashes have grounded air travel, David won't talk to her, and she could swear she's seen her military doctors around the neighborhood. It's only when she meets Amber Grey that things in her life begin to really fall apart, and the mysteries of the bird strikes, the military, and her own treatment come together. Reese realizes that she must find out what they did to her in that hospital, but her search for the truth threatens to expose a vast global conspiracy that the government has worked for decades to keep secret. From the very first page of this book when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune. In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast. It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.
