Religion and Politics in the Contemporary United States

Religion and Politics in the Contemporary United States

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Griffith, R. Marie / McAlister, Melani, PUBLISHER: Johns Hopkins University Press, This collection of essays from a special issue of American Quarterly explores the complex and sometimes contradictory ways that religion matters in contemporary public life. Religion and Politics in the Contemporary United States offers a groundbreaking, cross-disciplinary conversation between scholars in American studies and religious studies. The contributors explore numerous modes through which religious faith has mobilized political action. They utilize a variety of definitions of politics, ranging from lobbying by religious leaders to the political impact of popular culture. Their work includes the political activities of a very diverse group of religious believers: Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and others. In addition, theA book explores the meanings of religion for people who might contest the term -- those who are spiritual but not religious, for example, as well as activists who engage symbols of faith and community but who may not necessarily consider themselves members of a specific religion. Several essays also examine the meanings of secular identity, humanist politics, and the complex evocations of civil religion in American life. No other book on religion and politics includes anything like the diversity of religions, ethnicities, and topics that this one does -- from Mormon political mobilization to attempts at Americanizing Muslims in the post-9/11 United States, from CA(c)sar ChAvez to James Dobson, from interreligious cooperation and conflict over Darfur to the global politics surrounding the category of Hindus and South Asians in the United States.

Choreographing Empathy: Kinesthesia in Performance

Choreographing Empathy: Kinesthesia in Performance

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Foster, Susan Leigh, PUBLISHER: Routledge, "This is a urgently needed book a " as the question of choreographing behavior enters into realms outside of the aesthetic domains of theatrical dance, Susan Foster writes a thoroughly compelling argument" - AndrA(c) Lepecki, New York University "May well prove to be one of Susan Fostera (TM)s most important works." - Ramsay Burt, De Montford University, UK What do we feel when we watch dancing? Do we a dance alonga inwardly? Do we sense what the dancera (TM)s body is feeling? Do we imagine what it might feel like to perform those same moves? If we do, how do these responses influence how we experience dancing and how we derive significance from it? Choreographing Empathy challenges the idea of a direct psychphysical connection between the body of a dancer and that of their observer. In this groundbreaking investigation, Susan Foster argues that the connection is in fact highly mediated and influenced by ever-changing sociocultural mores. With the term a choreographya now being employed to describe troop movements in Iraq, the management of boardroom discussions and even the co-ordination of traffic lights, this is a reconception with ramifications not just for dance studies but for performance studies as a whole. Foster traces the changing definitions of choreography, kinesthesia and empathy from the s to the present day, showing how the observation, study and discussion of dance has developed through time. Understanding this development is key to understanding physicality and the body politic.

Letters of the Nun Eshinni: Images of Pure Land Buddhism in

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Dobbins, James C., PUBLISHER: University of Hawaii Press, Eshinni (?), a Buddhist nun and the wife of Shinran (), the celebrated founder of the True Pure Land, or Shin, school of Buddhism, was largely unknown until the discovery of a collection of her letters in . In this study, James C. Dobbins, a leading scholar of Pure Land Buddhism, has made creative use of these letters to shed new light on life and religion in medieval Japan. He provides a complete translation of the letters and an explication of them that reveals the character and flavor of early Shin Buddhism. Readers will come away with a new perspective on Pure Land scholarship and a vivid image of Eshinni and the world in which she lived. After situating the ideas and practices of Pure Land Buddhism in the context of the actual living conditions of thirteenth-century Japan, Dobbins examines the portrayal of women in Pure Land Buddhism, the great range of lifestyles found among medieval women and nuns, and how they constructed a meaningful religious life amid negative stereotypes. He goes on to analyze aspects of medieval religion that have been omitted in our modern-day account of Pure Land and tries to reconstruct the religious assumptions of Eshinni and Shinran in their own day. A prevailing theme that runs throughout the book is the need to look beyond idealized images of Buddhism found in doctrine to discover the religion as it was lived and practiced. Scholars and students of Buddhism, Japanese history, women's studies, and religious studies will find much in this engaging work that is thought-provoking and insightful.

She Who Restores the Roman Empire: The Biblical Prophecy of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Criswell, David, PUBLISHER: Writers Club Press, With the popularity of the Left Behind series studies in prophetic interpretations have increased with some seminaries even offering degrees in prophetic studies. She Who Restores the Roman Empire is a careful historical and exegetical study of one such prophecy: the Whore of Babylon, whose name has been uttered throughout history and is said to be "the lover" of the anti-Christ to come. Of "The Biblical prophecy of the Whore of Babylon" St. Augustine said that the Church of Rome would one day apostatize while St. Jerome hinted that the day of apostasy may have already begun, but today even many Protestants reject this notion arguing instead that a new Babylonian kingdom will arise in Iraq. "She Who Restores the Roman Empire" is a thorough survey of this controversial prophecy. It examines the prophetic interpretations throughout history and shows their impact upon history. It shows how the prophecy itself helped shaped the Reformation and counter-Reformation. It also discusses the newer interpretations which predict a revival of ancient Babylon or a global New Age religion. Dr. Criswell's conclusion is based on thorough exegesis and on historical precedent. He contends that it is the Harlot who will initiate the restoration of the Roman Empire and the anti-Christ will initially be his puppet before turning on her and destroying her great city. Napoleon was an archetype of the coming anti-Christ who will promise a new world but deliver destruction.

Black Mirror/Espejo Negro

Black Mirror/Espejo Negro

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lasch, Pedro / Pedro Lasch / Jennifer a. Gonzalez, PUBLISHER: Duke University Press, The provocative three-part project "Black Mirror/Espejo Negro" by the artist Pedro Lasch encompasses a museum installation, photographs of the installation, and this bilingual book, including many of the photos, the artist's statement, and critical commentaries. The project began as an installation commissioned by the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University to accompany the exhibition "El Greco to Velazquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III." In a gallery adjacent to the exhibit of Spanish Golden Age masterpieces, Lasch placed black rectangular mirrors on the walls, each with an image of a Spanish Renaissance painting behind it. Pre-Columbian stone and ceramic figures, chosen by Lasch from the museum's permanent collection of Meso-American art, stood on pedestals facing toward each mirror and away from visitors entering the room. Viewers were drawn into a meditation on colonialism and spectatorship when, on looking into the black mirrors, they saw the pre-Columbian figures, seventeenth and eighteenth-century Spanish priests and conquistadores, themselves, and the contemporary gallery environment. The book "Black Mirror/Espejo Negro" includes full-color reproductions of thirty-nine photographs of the installation, as well as the text that Lasch wrote to accompany it. In short essays, scholars reflect on Lasch's work in relation to current debates in art history and visual studies, race discourse, pre-Columbian studies, postcolonial theory, and de-colonial thought. "Contributors." Srinivas Aravamudan, Jennifer A. Gonzalez, Pedro Lasch, Arnaud Maillet, Walter Mignolo, Pete Sigal

Advances in Mixed-Method Evaluation: The Challenges and

Advances in Mixed-Method Evaluation: The Challenges and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Greene, Jennifer C. / Caracelli, Valerie J. / Ev, PUBLISHER: Jossey-Bass, Evaluation theory and practice today are characteristically pluralistic, embracing diverse perspectives, methods, data, and values within and across studies that aim to generate more insightful and meaningful evaluative claims. This volume seeks to strengthen the promise of pluralistic evaluation by advancing an enhanced conceptual framework for planning and implementing mixed-method evaluation studies. Previous mixed-method work has concentrated on the technical level of method, focusing on combining qualitative and quantitative methods within one evaluation study. The present mixed-method volume addresses the philosophical level of paradigm, analyzing the challenges of combining in one study different, even conflicting, assumptions about the nature of social phenomena and our claims to know them. The volume argues for a shift in the mixed-method conversation. The shift would be away from a preoccupation with explicit assumptive differences among paradigms, such as objectivity-subjectivity and realism-relativism, and toward other characteristics of social inquiry traditions. Such characteristics define these traditions in important ways but are not logically irreconcilable. The significant advance here is to redirect the bases for mixing methods away from what may well be incommensurable philosophical assumptions and toward other inquiry characteristics that can more productively share a common analytic space. Through analysis of illustrative cases, this volume presents an array of conceptual and practical ideas for promising mixed-method inquiry directions. This is the 74th issue of the quarterly journal" New Directions for Evaluation."

Contemporary German Youth and Their Elders: A Generational

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Watts, Meredith W. / Fischer, Arthur / Fuchs, Werner, PUBLISHER: Praeger, Systematic research on the changing experience and social and political characteristics of German youth has been carried out in the Federal Republic of Germany on an ongoing basis since the early s. Until now, however, the results of these long-term studies have not been made available in English. Six volumes of this research--including new analyses prepared especially for this book--are distilled in the present work, which offers a comprehensive and focused portrait of German youth of succeeding postwar generations from to the present. Following an introductory survey of the scope and themes addressed in the study, the authors highlight the contrasting experiences of youth of the s and those who came of age soon after the end of World War II. They examine the fundamental constituents of youth as a developmental period, with particular reference to changes in the recent era. Attitudinal scales are developed and applied to assessments of variations in social and political orientation among generations and between distinct subgroups of contemporary youth. Differences between young women in the early postwar period and the "alternative era" of the s and s are explored. Focusing on "views of the future," the final chapter looks at the diversity of lifestyles that has become characteristic of youth over the last decade and at the increasing differentiation between generations. Providng a wealth of new material on an important body of research, this book makes a substantial contribution to the study of youth in advanced industrialized nations. Chesnutt and Realism: A Study of the Novels

Chesnutt and Realism: A Study of the Novels

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Simmons, Ryan, PUBLISHER: University Alabama Press, An important examination of Charles Chesnutt as a practitioner of realism. With the release of previously unpublished novels and a recent proliferation of critical studies on his life and work, Charles W. Chesnutt () has emerged as a major American writer of his time--the age of Howells, Twain, and Wharton. In "Chesnutt and Realism, "Ryan Simmons breaks new ground by theorizing how understandings of literary realism have shaped, and can continue to shape, the reception of Chesnutt's work. Although Chesnutt is typically acknowledged as the most prominent African American writer of the realist period, little attention has been paid to the central question of this study: what does it mean to call Chesnutt a realist? A writer whose career was circumscribed by the dismal racial politics of his era, Chesnutt refused to conform to literary conventions for depicting race. Nor did he use his imaginative skills to evade the realities he and other African Americans faced. Rather, he experimented with ways of portraying reality that could elicit an appropriate, proportionate response to it, as Simmons demonstrates in extended readings of each of Chestnutt's novels, including important unpublished works that have been overlooked by previous critics. "Chesnutt and Realism" also addresses a curiously neglected subject in American literary studies--the relationship between American literary realism and race. By taking Chesnutt seriously as a contributor to realism, this book articulates the strategies by which one African American intellectual helped to define the discourses that influenced his fate. Ryan Simmons is Assistant Professor of English at Utah Valley State College
