He smelled so good that he was turning me on but that had to wait, I had to be satisfied with just his warm body next to mine. We both fell asleep wrapped in each others arms. I had a funny feeling and opened my eyes to see Bob sitting up in bed. What's the matter I asked? He said he just didn't feel right. Instant panic grew inside of me as I dialed 911. Bob screamed out my name as he held his arms out. I went into his arms, he hugged me and his whole body went limp. I couldn't feel a pulse and leaned on his chest to listen to his heartbeat but there was nothing. As the medics arrived I let them in and was told to stay in the living room. I don't know why but I felt that Bob's heart had beat it's final beat. I knew deep down in my heart that no matter how hard I could shake him, or how desperately I cried or yelled or even prayed he would never wake up again. He promised me we would always be together and now he is dead.

Writing Huck Finn: Mark Twain's Creative Process

Writing Huck Finn: Mark Twain's Creative Process

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Doyno, Victor A., PUBLISHER: University of Pennsylvania Press, In "Writing Huck Finn," Vic Doyno offers a new, accessible, and innovative approach to America's favorite novel. He presents new material from the revised manuscript of "Huckleberry Finn" and also draws upon Samuel Clemen's unpublished family journal, his correspondence, and his concerns about the lack of an international copyright law. Doyno focuses on Twain's creative artistry in stylistic matters, such as tone of voice, characterization, humor, plot, description, and imagery, using genetic criticism to reveal how the novel grew through creative revision. He also uses the evidence from the manuscript to explore new thematic interpretations about the role of nobility and religion in the novel. Generations of readers have loved Twain's masterpiece but have been confused or vexed by the novel's ending. Doyno offers some surprising information about topics as varied as literacy, the economics of authorship, and the leasing of Black convicts. This information provides a new, coherent, and satisfying reading of the ending. Although there have been several perceptive books about "Huckleberry Finn," none reveals so much about the composition process and about how Twain created his meanings. Creative writers will be fascinated to learn how Twain revised his work-in-progress to sustain the reader's interest, scholars of American literature will discover many new interpretations-- and all readers will gain new perspectives on this rewarding masterpiece and on the survival of our national literature.

Turtle Lung Woman's Granddaughter

Turtle Lung Woman's Granddaughter

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Red Shirt, Delphine, PUBLISHER: University of Nebraska Press, Turtle Lung Woman's Granddaughter is the unforgettable story of several generations of Lakota women, told in their words. Delphine Red Shirt -- like her mother, Lone Woman, and her mother's grandmother, Turtle Lung Woman -- grew up on the wide open Plains of northern Nebraska and southern South Dakota. Lone Woman told her daughter the story of her life growing up on Pine Ridge in the early and mid-twentieth century. Remarkably, Lone Woman also recounted the life of her own grandmother, Turtle Lung Woman, who had grown up Lakota before her people had been forced to live on reservations in the late nineteenth century. These two women's lives overlapped by fifteen years, allowing the younger to learn many fascinating details and stories about the life and times of the elder. Delphine Red Shirt has delicately woven the life stories of her mother and great-grandmother into a continuous narrative that succeeds triumphantly as a moving, epic saga of Lakota women from traditional times to the present. Especially revealing and riveting are Turtle Lung Woman's relationship with her husband, Paints His Face with Clay Land, her healing practice as a medicine woman (where turtle shells become animated and crawl during the Yuwipi ceremony), Lone Woman's hardships and celebrations growing up in the early twentieth century, and many wonderful details of their domestic lives before and during the early reservation years. Lone Woman passed away just after telling her story to her daughter. This splendid, magical story is a legacy for her and for all Lakota women.

Over doughnuts, Sarah, Mitzi, Iris, and Ellie form a quirky quartet of secretaries-to-be. What ensues is a lifelong friendship carried out primarily through monthly dinner parties composed of the four women and their tag-along husbands. Over a span of 50 years, children are born, hearts are broken, a president resigns, a war is lost, careers peak and crash, weight is gained and lost and gained again, and all the while food is burned, fondued, flambed, whipped up, and brought in. Sadly, but not uncommonly, the husbands pass away one by one, revealing the unfortunate fact that most women outlive their mates. The girlfriends' individual responses to widowhood illustrate that "moving on" can have a host of meanings and that grief has no time frame. As the friends face downtime, distance, and loss, each discovers that a 50-year friendship, a healthy dose of humor, and an occasional doughnut can trump whatever else life drops in your path. The Twenty-Five Year Century: A South Vietnamese General

The Twenty-Five Year Century: A South Vietnamese General

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lam, Quang Thi / Thi, Lam Quang, PUBLISHER: University of North Texas Press, For Victor Hugo, the nineteenth century could be remembered by only its first two years, which established peace in Europe and France's supremacy on the continent. For Gen. Lam Quang Thi, the twentieth century had only twenty-five years: from to , during which the Republic of Vietnam and its army grew up and collapsed with the fall of Saigon. This is the story of those twenty-five years. General Thi fought in the Indochina War as a battery commander on the side of the French. When Viet Minh aggression began after the Geneva Accords, he served in the nascent Vietnamese National Army, and his career covers this army's entire lifespan. He was deputy commander of the 7th Infantry Division, and in he assumed command of the 9th Infantry Division. In , at the age of thirty-three, he became one of the youngest generals in the Vietnamese Army. He participated in the Tet Offensive before being removed from the front lines for political reasons. When North Vietnam launched the Great Offensive, he was brought back to the field and eventually promoted to commander of an Army Corps Task Force along the Demilitarized Zone. With the fall of Saigon, he left Vietnam and emigrated to the United States. Like his tactics during battle, General Thi pulls no punches in his denunciation of the various regimes of the Republic and complacency and arrogance toward Vietnam in the policies of both France and the United States. Without lapsing into bitterness, this is finally a tribute to the soldiers who fell on behalf of a good cause.

Past Imperfect: A John McIntire Mystery

Past Imperfect: A John McIntire Mystery

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hills, Kathleen, PUBLISHER: Poisoned Pen Press, A grizzled Lake Superior fisherman with a massive allergy to bees dies very early one morning alone on his boat. Was he stung to death? John McIntire, retired from a career in military intelligence and striving to regain a place in his boyhood home after 30 years away, is serving as township constable. He questions the easy verdict. The town of St. Adele has little experience with violent death -- or murder. Nor does McIntire, despite fighting in two world wars. Worse, all the suspects are friends and neighbors, men and women he grew up with "talking Swede." The dead man, last of a Norwegian family who came to raise apples in the struggling rural township sandwiched between the Huron Mountains of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the southern shore of Lake Superior, had no real enemies despite his gruff temper. And he had little to leave aside from a heavily mortgaged boat. So, who wanted to kill him? Saddened by violence striking Utopia, worried his British bride might cut and run, his task complicated by taciturn witnesses and six party telephone lines, the naturally humorous McIntire, while bringing a murderer to justice, struggles to evolve a new perspective on a rural community he has idealized for three decades. Rich in magnificent landscape, vivid characters stepping from a past both thoroughly Midwestern and multi-ethnic, and a secret-laden story, filled with laughter and warm insights, Past Imperfect offers a new voice of great promise reminiscent of the debuts of Steve Hamilton, A Cold Day in Paradise, and William Kent Krueger, Iron Lake.

Think Big: My Life in Politics

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Manning / Manning, Preston, PUBLISHER: McClelland & Stewart, He built a party from nothing to become Leader of the Opposition in just 14 years Preston Manning grew up in a political household but his first career choice was as a business consultant. It was only years later, when he sensed a rising discontent among fellow Westerners, that he decided the time was right to establish a reform movement. In the fall of , he wrote a memo in Calgary. In the spring of he addressed a meeting in Vancouver. In the fall the Reform Party's founding assembly was held in Winnipeg. And from then on the movement's progress was unstoppable. This is a candid account by Reform's founder, and the father of the Canadian Alliance, of the most extraordinary story in contemporary Canadian politics. Manning describes Reform's first battles: the election of "Senator-in-Waiting" Stan Waters, the grassroots campaign against the Charlottetown accord, and the hard-fought federal election. He frankly acknowledges some of his party's early missteps in Ottawa. But he also recounts with vigour the cynicism - and worse - that was evident in the behaviour of the governing Liberal party. Manning denounces Mr. Chretien's mishandling of the Quebec referendum. And he recapitulates in devastating detail the full story of Shawinigate. Manning describes the birth of the Canadian Alliance. He follows the agonizing growing pains it experienced under Stockwell Day's inept leadership and he considers what might have been. He is candid in assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the party's current leadership. Of his own career - post-politics - he is cheerfully forward-looking: there is challenging terrain ahead and Preston Manning proposes to serve as an advance scout. This is a thoughtful, informed, sometimes surprisingly funny memoir by a man who has attained, by dint of his own extraordinary achievements, stature as a contemporary statesman. Affirmative Action in Medicine: Improving Health Care for

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Curtis, James L., PUBLISHER: University of Michigan Press, Affirmative action programs have significantly changed American medicine for the better, not only in medical school admissions and access to postgraduate training but also in bringing a higher quality of health care to all people. James L. Curtis approaches this important transition from historical, statistical, and personal perspectives. He tells how over the course of his medical education and career as a psychiatrist and professor--often as the first or only African American in his cohort--the status of minorities in the medical professions grew from a tiny percentage to a far more equitable representation of the American population. Advancing arguments from his earlier book, Blacks, Medical Schools, and Society, Curtis evaluates the outcomes of affirmative action efforts over the past thirty years. He describes formidable barriers to minority access to medical-education opportunities and the resulting problems faced by minority patients in receiving medical treatment. His progress report includes a review of two thousand minority students admitted to U.S. medical schools in , following them through graduation and their careers, comparing them with the careers of two thousand of their nonminority peers. These samples provide an important look at medical schools that, while heralding dramatic progress in physician education and training opportunity, indicates much room for further improvement. A basic hurdle continues to face African Americans and other minorities who are still confined to segregated neighborhoods and inferior school systems that stifle full scholastic development. Curtis urges us as a nation to develop all our human resources through an expansion ofaffirmative action programs, thus improving health care for everyone. James L. Curtis is Clinical Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Finding Our Unity in the Scriptures

Finding Our Unity in the Scriptures

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Huffstetler, Joel W., PUBLISHER: Authorhouse, This book grew out of a Bible Conference at Kanuga Conference Center in October, , led by Dr. George L. Carey, the 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury. Archbishop Carey's theme was the life and ministry of St. Paul, with a focus on the Letter to the Ephesians. I was privileged to serve as a workshop leader and preacher during the conference, and I chose as the theme of my workshop to study St. Paul and reconciliation, using Ephesians as our primary text. The main thrust of the workshop was to study selected passages from Ephesians in detail, and to look to St. Paul's writings for guidance regarding reconciliation in the Body of Christ. We live in a time when there is such a pressing need in the Church for reconciliation, a rekindling of a spirit of love and mutual respect rather than the judgment and suspicion which all too often characterize relations among Christians who find themselves in disagreement with one another regarding the divisive issues of our time. This book advocates a renewed realization that in Jesus Christ what unites us as Christians is far greater than what divides us. These essays on selected passages from Ephesians and the concluding essay, The Way Forward, are offered in the cause of reconciliation. They are suitable for study by individuals as well as parish and diocesan study groups seeking reconciliation in the Church. Study questions are presented at the end of each chapter to foster reflection and discussion. "I welcome this book as an offering to us all. It presents one means for discovering a receptive stance to God's will for us, even in the midst of the harsh rhetoric and self-justifying proclamations of our day. I am grateful to Joel Huffstetler for hiscontribution to the forming of an attitude of the heart committed to reconciliation." From the Afterword by The Rt. Rev. Charles G. vonRosenberg, Bishop of East Tennessee.

In this luminous debut novel, Sarah Addison Allen tells the story of that enchanted tree, and the extraordinary people who tend it.... The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures. A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plants--from the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleys--except for Claire's rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before. When Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own, Claire's quiet life is turned upside down--along with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy--if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom--or with each other. Enchanting and heartfelt, this captivating novel is sure to cast a spell with a style all its own.... "From the Hardcover edition." Acquista Ora

American Disease

American Disease

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lodge, George C. / Bellamy Foster, John, PUBLISHER: New York University Press, In this provacative study of the "disease" afflicting American industry today, George Lodge, a distinguished professor at the Harvard Business School, reveals the malady as a psychological disorder, characterized by a refusal to face the facts of interdependence in a competetive world; by a reluctance to confront the grave inadequacies in the operation of our great institutions--business, labor, and government; and by the fact that "leaders do not lead; those with responsibility do not fight. Timidity, born of resignation, discourages change." Lodge begins by defining the disease through its symptoms: failing industries, stubborn unemployment, lagging economic growth, stagnant productivity, overseas competition, focus on short-term financial gain, and, perhaps most telling, the pervasive feeling among Americans that their land of plenty has become a land of want. He examines the gradually changing roles and relationships between government, great corpoations, and trade unions that are nevertheless obscure by traditional and detrimental assumptions, distrust, and a set of ideologies that are increasingly inefficient, ineffective, inconsistent, and irrelevant. And he finds the incoherence of American industrial policy exemplified by the fact the we preach the old virtues of free trade and the sanctity of the market while in actuality we pursue a strategy--including tax incentives and trade subsidies--the misshapes the free market. Based on interviews with more than 150 leaders of the nation's institutions, "The American Disease" goes beyond diagnosis to offer logical and feasible proposals to cure this dangerous condition. Lodge suggests, for example, that the office of the United States Trade Representative be expanded and strengthened to deal with the growing pressure for protection against imports and with the confusion among our trading partners. He shows why business and labor must work together more closely in a non-adversarial way with federal and local government to determine community needs. He explains why Washington will be forced to direct the future of electric power in America, rather than leave the decisions to fifty different sets of state regulators. And he makes a number of recommendations to alter the ways in which corporations manage themselves and deal with government, and to reduce the social and economic costs that are implicit in these changes. George C. Lodge believes that recovery from our institutional ailments is possible, and this timely and perceptive book offers a resoundingly rational course toward that crucial goal.

The Wolves at Evelyn: Journeys Through a Dark Century

The Wolves at Evelyn: Journeys Through a Dark Century

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rhenisch, Harold, PUBLISHER: Brindle & Glass, At once a memoir, a work of philosophy, a story of European immigration to Canada's dark places of the earth, and an exploration of the roots and effects of colonialism, "The Wolves At Evelyn: Journeys Through a Dark Century" is a stylistic and rhetorical tour de force from one of Canada's master prose stylists.Dissident communists fleeing s Germany, Harold Rhenisch's grandparents imagined that British Columbia's Interior was the end of the earth-a new world where they could fulfil their dreams of the land, freed from tyrrany and from history itself. A generation later, in the wake of World War II, his father arrived, carrying many of the same ideas with him. What they found instead was a colonial culture as highly developed as Doris Lessing's Rhodesia.Rhenisch grew up at the nexus of these cultures: a Germany where Nazism simultaneously did and did not happen, a Canada in the process of shedding British colonialism for American, and a land-the Interior-that had no point of contact with any of them. With remarkable range and vision, Rhenisch turns in a bravura performance, sifting through the ashes of personal experience, family anecdotes, literature, art, history, and the land itself for clues to a great untold story, Rhenisch assembles a collage of images and ideas that becomes a whole much greater than the sum of its parts. The hidden history of a forgotten outpost of the Empire is laid open, shattering dearly held myths and exposing buried skeletons. How was the sunny, carefree Okanagan Valley fruit culture built on the back of King Leopold's Congolese slave trade? How does Margaret Atwood's garrison theory of literature reflect on Rhenisch family's hidden Nazi past? How did the Hudson's Bay Company Blanket act as both a cherished kitsch object for generations of Canadians and a tool of genocide? Alternating between light and darkness, great humour and sharp indignation, this is a disturbing, thought-provoking and important work from a masterful writer and cultural analyst.

International Public Relations H Pod

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Culbertson / Culbertson, Hugh M. / Chen, Ni, PUBLISHER: Routledge, As a formal occupation, public relations grew primarily in the United States through much of the twentieth century. In recent years, however, it has spread rapidly throughout the world. Broad outlines on how public relations practices differ from country to country have only recently begun to take shape in scholarly writing about the field. The existing literature on international public relations tends to focus on how those working for western organizations --particularly multi-national corporations--can best practice abroad. Although useful, such writings tend to focus on adaptation of western approaches, not on development of new ones designed specifically for varied sociocultural settings around the world. The editors have produced this book for a number of reasons. There has been tremendous growth in the teaching of public relations around the world--enhancing practice in many countries outside North America. There has also been rapid growth in the number of professors who demand theoretical perspectives which might facilitate a unified comparative analysis across countries and regions. Only a few U.S. universities--six documented in this book--now teach courses formerly called "International Public Relations." However, many professors are going abroad to teach and do research. This suggests increased interest in and a need for courses dealing with international public relations. Furthermore, there is a dearth of literature dealing in depth with international PR, an important component of international communication. This appears to be the first book-length comparative analysis of public relations as practiced in various countries and regions around the world. Although existing books on international PR focus largely on ways in which western practitioners, employers, and clients can operate effectively in other countries, this volume views public relations in each country or region covered from the perspective of practitioners in that country. It contains six chapters designed to provide a theoretical anchor for the 14 country and region analyses. Given the intense interest in public relations education as a factor in professional enhancement, it also discusses issues and practices relating to education.

Comfort Food Fast: Easy and Elegant Food That Soothes the

Comfort Food Fast: Easy and Elegant Food That Soothes the

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gardon, Anne, PUBLISHER: Firefly Books, In Provence, where Anne Gardon grew up, comfort food means hearty dishes, thick, chunky soups and stews and old-fashioned desserts. For most of us, it also means those tastes we crave when we need a little creature comfort, the best-loved dishes of our childhood, the familiar flavors and smells that conjure up warm memories and good times. Gardon is a strong believer that comfort also means not being a slave to the stove while friends are relaxing in the dining room. In Comfort Food Fast, rather than feature recipes for an unpredictable souffle or a treacherous hollandaise sauce, Gardon includes recipes for one-pot meals which can be served informally at the table, where family and friends can relax and enjoy the comfortable ambience that comes from a simple and tasty meal. Main-course dishes such as "Cannelloni With Ricotta and Summer Savory Filling," "Pasta Timbale," "Roast Chicken With Herb and Cheese Stuffing," "Chicken Cacciatore," "Pork Tenderloin Stuffed With Apples," "Lamb Stew (Moroccan-Style)" and desserts like "Apple Bread Pudding," "Viennese Shortbread," "Iced Chocolate Mousse" and "Chocolate and Raspberry Clafoutis" are guaranteed to satisfy our deepest cravings. Gardon's personal recipe for happiness at the table is what she calls C.H.E.F.s "Cuisine: Cheap, Healthy, Easy and Fun." Her goal here is to teach us how to get the most out of the best ingredients plus how to put some away for a rainy (or snowy) day. She counsels preparing favorite comfort foods in volume and provides advice on portioning and freezing for those times when creating even a simple dinner can pose a challenge. And what could be more comforting at the end of a long, hard day than to know that something delicious and soul-soothing is already prepared, just waiting to be eaten? Gardon's latest cookbook is illustrated throughout with the author's own sumptuous full-color photographs.
