ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Shapiro, Ian, PUBLISHER: Princeton University Press, In this captivating yet troubling book, Ian Shapiro offers a searing indictment of many influential practices in the social sciences and humanities today. Perhaps best known for his critique of rational choice theory, Shapiro expands his purview here. In discipline after discipline, he argues, scholars have fallen prey to inward-looking myopia that results from--and perpetuates--a flight from reality. In the method-driven academic culture we inhabit, argues Shapiro, researchers too often make display and refinement of their techniques the principal scholarly activity. The result is that they lose sight of the objects of their study. Pet theories and methodological blinders lead unwelcome facts to be ignored, sometimes not even perceived. The targets of Shapiro's critique include the law and economics movement, overzealous formal and statistical modeling, various reductive theories of human behavior, misguided conceptual analysis in political theory, and the Cambridge school of intellectual history. As an alternative to all of these, Shapiro makes a compelling case for problem-driven social research, rooted in a realist philosophy of science and an antireductionist view of social explanation. In the lucid--if biting--prose for which Shapiro is renowned, he explains why this requires greater critical attention to how problems are specified than is usually undertaken. He illustrates what is at stake for the study of power, democracy, law, and ideology, as well as in normative debates over rights, justice, freedom, virtue, and community. Shapiro answers many critics of his views along the way, securing his position as one of the distinctive social and political theorists of our time.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Curtis, James L., PUBLISHER: University of Michigan Press, Affirmative action programs have significantly changed American medicine for the better, not only in medical school admissions and access to postgraduate training but also in bringing a higher quality of health care to all people. James L. Curtis approaches this important transition from historical, statistical, and personal perspectives. He tells how over the course of his medical education and career as a psychiatrist and professor--often as the first or only African American in his cohort--the status of minorities in the medical professions grew from a tiny percentage to a far more equitable representation of the American population. Advancing arguments from his earlier book, Blacks, Medical Schools, and Society, Curtis evaluates the outcomes of affirmative action efforts over the past thirty years. He describes formidable barriers to minority access to medical-education opportunities and the resulting problems faced by minority patients in receiving medical treatment. His progress report includes a review of two thousand minority students admitted to U.S. medical schools in , following them through graduation and their careers, comparing them with the careers of two thousand of their nonminority peers. These samples provide an important look at medical schools that, while heralding dramatic progress in physician education and training opportunity, indicates much room for further improvement. A basic hurdle continues to face African Americans and other minorities who are still confined to segregated neighborhoods and inferior school systems that stifle full scholastic development. Curtis urges us as a nation to develop all our human resources through an expansion ofaffirmative action programs, thus improving health care for everyone. James L. Curtis is Clinical Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Dugard, Pat / Todman, John / Staines, Harry, PUBLISHER: Routledge, This fully updated new edition not only provides an introduction to a range of advanced statistical techniques that are used in psychology, but has been expanded to include new chapters describing methods and examples of particular interest to medical researchers. It takes a very practical approach, aimed at enabling readers to begin using the methods to tackle their own problems. This book provides a non-mathematical introduction to multivariate methods, with an emphasis on helping the reader gain an intuitive understanding of what each method is for, what it does and how it does it. The first chapter briefly reviews the main concepts of univariate and bivariate methods and provides an overview of the multivariate methods that will be discussed, bringing out the relationships among them, and summarising how to recognise what types of problem each of them may be appropriate for tackling. In the remaining chapters, introductions to the methods and important conceptual points are followed by the presentation of typical applications from psychology and medicine, using examples with fabricated data. Instructions on how to do the analyses and how to make sense of the results are fully illustrated with dialogue boxes and output tables from SPSS, as well as details of how to interpret and report the output, and extracts of SPSS syntax and code from relevant SAS procedures. A list of further reading shows where more information can be obtained on each of the methods, and all data are provided online at http: //www.psypress.com/multivariate-analysis/datasets This book gets students started, and prepares them to approach more comprehensive treatments with confidence. This makes it an ideal text for psychology students, medical students and students or academics in any discipline that uses multivariate methods.

Children need to know how to challenge conclusions, uncover assumptions, and analyze how data can both reveal and conceal certain kinds of relationships. This text shows prospective and practicing K-8 teachers how to help students develop a critical perspective involving knowledge of essential skills and concepts in both mathematics and language, and the ability to use this knowledge to both effectively compose statistical texts and critique the texts of others. Data-related texts are multimodal, incorporating language as well as visual and numerical information. Arguing that these texts must be interrogated for their biases and limitations, and underscoring the interdisciplinary importance of this stance by drawing on theoretical perspectives from both the fields of language and mathematics, Learning to Read the Numbers: Uniquely addresses both mathematics and language issues as they relate to developing a critical perspective toward data-related texts in the elementary classroom Presents a heuristic outlining key parts of the data-gathering process and important questions that teachers can pose to nurture this critical orientation Examines the dimensions of this process in depth, drawing on examples from a range of elementary school classes, as well as some examples from the media Suggests questions that teachers might consider as they think about fostering a critical perspective in their classrooms Features a close look at a fifth grade class as it engages in a long-term study of the school lunch program a DEGREES' their experience illustrates how the various aspects of the heuristic are developed over time Engaging, concise, rich with examples and clear connections to classroom practice, this text is designed for teacher education courses in the areas of language arts, mathematics, and curriculum studies, and for elementary teachers, administrators, and literacy and mathematics coaches.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gimbel, Steven, PUBLISHER: Johns Hopkins University Press, Is relativity Jewish? The Nazis denigrated Albert Einstein's revolutionary theory by calling it "Jewish science," a charge typical of the ideological excesses of Hitler and his followers. Philosopher of science Steven Gimbel explores the many meanings of this provocative phrase and considers whether there is any sense in which Einstein's theory of relativity is Jewish. Arguing that we must take seriously the possibility that the Nazis were in some sense correct, Gimbel examines Einstein and his work to explore how beliefs, background, and environment may--or may not--influence the work of the scientist. You cannot understand Einstein's science, Gimbel declares, without knowing the history, religion, and philosophy that influenced it. No one, especially Einstein himself, denies Einstein's Jewish heritage, but many are uncomfortable saying that he was a Jew while he was at his desk working. To understand what "Jewish" means for Einstein's work, Gimbel first explores the many definitions of "Jewish" and asks whether there are elements of Talmudic thinking apparent in Einstein's theory of relativity. He applies this line of inquiry to other scientists, including Isaac Newton, Ren? Descartes, Sigmund Freud, and ?mile Durkheim, to consider whether and how their specific religious beliefs or backgrounds manifested in their scientific endeavors. "Einstein's Jewish Science" intertwines science, history, philosophy, theology, and politics in fresh and fascinating ways to solve the multifaceted riddle of what religion means--and what it means to science. There are some senses, Gimbel claims, in which Jews can find a special connection to "E = mc2," and this claim leads to the engaging, spirited debate at the heart of this book. Acquista Ora
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Brooks, Al, PUBLISHER: John Wiley & Sons, The introduction to this book will be short and related only to this volume. The market is either trending or in a trading range and it is often transitioning from one to the other. When the market is transitioning from a trading range into a trend, it is breaking out. Since trends were just discussed in the first book, this second book begins with how trading ranges turn into trends, which are now familiar to the reader. It explains why breakouts form and why they end, which is always at some kind of support or resistance area. The market gets drawn quickly to these areas and because of this pull, I refer to them as magnets. As the breakout is unfolding, traders can use several mathematical techniques to measure where the trend will likely end and then begin to form a trading range, and these measured moves are discussed in detail. Once the market reaches a magnet, it then pauses and pulls back, and usually then resumes. Pullbacks are reliable setups and the book describes them and how to trade them in detail. If a pullback grows so large that it is uncertain if the trend will resume or reverse, it has become a trading range. Most markets are in trading ranges most of the time and therefore most trades that traders make are within trading ranges. Understanding them and how to trade them is critical to anyone trying to make a living as a trader. Traders need to know how to place orders to get into and out of trades and it is useful to know how to scale into and out of positions. Also, mathematics is the basis for all trading. Every trader asks himself, "Will I make money if I take this trade?" This means that the traders is making a statistical analysis of what he sees based on risk, reward, and probability, and understanding this math makes trading less stressful and more profitable.

Even small choices are important because you never know when one may become an important turning point. The book Turning Points illustrates why learning how to overcome disappointment and adversity is one of the most important lessons in life. It relates how the author ignored the paths of least resistance and chose the less travelled paths that took him beyond his wildest dreams. It describes the problems and rewards of working in international business. And it tells what the Human Resource departments don't: why experience is a false glass ceiling and how to recognize opportunity.Turning Points explains why the author was a "Creator Builder and/or Business Surgeon and not a Business Caretaker." It concludes with the two most important turning points in the author's life: surviving an elite navy officer training program in World War II, and meeting Grace, his lovely wife of 64 years.About the Author: Carroll V. Kroeger, 85, of Franklin, Tennessee, is a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. He is a Rice University NROTC graduate, and holds a BA in math and physics, and an MBA from Vanderbilt University. Having achieved a global reputation in natural gas engineering, he helped bring about an expansion of the natural gas industries of Western Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. He developed some of America's first energy conservation programs. Kroeger was a tenured associate professor of business at Belmont University, and took the Nashville Business Incubation Center at Tennessee State University from concept to international recognition.Publisher's website: http: //www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/TurningPoints.html
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bryson, Bill, PUBLISHER: Doubleday Canada, From the Royal Society, a peerless collection of all-new science writing Bill Bryson, who explored all -- or at least a great deal of -- current scientific knowledge in A Short History of Nearly Everything, now turns his attention to the history of that knowledge. As editor of Seeing Further, he has rounded up an extraordinary roster of scientists who write and writers who know science in order to celebrate 350 years of the Royal Society, Britain's scientific national academy. The result is an encyclopedic survey of the history, philosophy and current state of science, written in an accessible and inspiring style by some of today's most important writers. The contributors include Margaret Atwood, Steve Jones, Richard Dawkins, James Gleick, Richard Holmes, and Neal Stephenson, among many others, on subjects ranging from metaphysics to nuclear physics, from the threatened endtimes of flu and climate change to our evolving ideas about the nature of time itself, from the hidden mathematics that rule the universe to the cosmological principle that guides "Star Trek." The collection begins with a brilliant introduction from Bryson himself, who says: "It is impossible to list all the ways that the Royal Society has influenced the world, but you can get some idea by typing in 'Royal Society' as a word search in the electronic version of the "Dictionary of National Biography." That produces 218 pages of results -- entries, nearly as many as for the Church of England (at ) and considerably more than for the House of Commons () or House of Lords ()." As this book shows, the Royal Society not only produces the best scientists and science, it also produces and inspires the very best science writing.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rose, Paul Lawrence, PUBLISHER: University of California Press, No one better represents the plight and the conduct of German intellectuals under Hitler than Werner Heisenberg, whose task it was to build an atomic bomb for Nazi Germany. The controversy surrounding Heisenberg still rages, because of the nature of his work and the regime for which it was undertaken. What precisely did Heisenberg know about the physics of the atomic bomb? How deep was his loyalty to the German government during the Third Reich? Assuming that he had been able to build a bomb, would he have been willing? These questions, the moral and the scientific, are answered by Paul Lawrence Rose with greater accuracy and breadth of documentation than any other historian has yet achieved. Digging deep into the archival record among formerly secret technical reports, Rose establishes that Heisenberg never overcame certain misconceptions about nuclear fission, and as a result the German leaders never pushed for atomic weapons. In fact, Heisenberg never had to face the moral problem of whether he "should" design a bomb for the Nazi regime. Only when he and his colleagues were interned in England and heard about Hiroshima did Heisenberg realize that his calculations were wrong. He began at once to construct an image of himself as a "pure" scientist who could have built a bomb but chose to work on reactor design instead. This was fiction, as Rose demonstrates: in reality, Heisenberg blindly supported and justified the cause of German victory. The question of why he did, and why he misrepresented himself afterwards, is answered through Rose's subtle analysis of German mentality and the scientists' problems of delusion and self-delusion. This fascinating study is a profound effort to understand one of the twentieth century's great enigmas.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Zimring, Franklin E., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, The 40% drop in crime that occurred across the U.S. from to largely remains an unsolved mystery. Even more puzzling then is the crime rate drop in New York City, which lasted twice long and was twice as large. This 80% drop in crime over nineteen years represents the largest crime decline on record. In The City that Became Safe, Franklin Zimring sets off in search of the New York difference through a detailed and comprehensive statistical investigation into the city's falling crime rates and possible explanations. If you listen to City Hall, aggressive police created a zero tolerance law enforcement regime that drove crime rates down. Is this self-serving political sound bite true? Are the official statistics generated by the police accurate? Zimring shows the numbers are correct and argues that some combination of more cops, new tactics, and new management can take some credit for the decline, but zero tolerance policing and quality of life were never a consistent part of the NYPD's strategy. That the police can make a difference in preventing crime overturns decades of conventional wisdom for criminologists, but Zimring points out the New York experience challenges the major assumptions dominating American crime and drug control policies that most everyone else has missed. First, imprisonment in actually New York decreased significantly from to and was well below the national average, proving that it is possible to have substantially less crime without increases in incarceration. Second, the NYPD sharply reduced drug violence (over 90%) without any reduction in hard drug use. In other words, they won the war on drug violence without winning the war on drugs. Finally, the stability of New York's population, economy, education, demographics, or immigration patterns calls into question the long-accepted cultural and structural causes of violence in America's cities. That high rates of crime are not hard wired into modern city life is welcome news for policy makers, criminal justice officials, and urban dwellers everywhere.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Patrick, Dave, PUBLISHER: Polair Publishing, Twenty-NINE influential thinkers present their own 'vital messages' about the changes that are happening and the changes that must happen as we move fully into a new world consciousness. Symbolic of the changes is the year , the year the ancient Mayan Calendar simply ends. It is probably best to think of it, though, as the great symbol of a new beginning. THE VIEW adds greatly to our understanding about this watershed, beginning from the simple question, 'How do we take charge of the change?'.THE VIEW also offers a look forward and back at what has led us to the brink of a new spirituality in life -'heart over mind': the movement that was once called simply 'the New Age'. It begins with one of the world's great pioneers. In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published a call to the world to take up the challenges death and the afterlife offered, and acknowledge a spiritual framework wider than any church then offered. He called his book THE VITAL MESSAGE, and from the start he made at changing people's consciousness much of the inspiration of other writers has unfolded. This book celebrates the 150th anniversary of his birth, on 22nd May . The 'Aquarian Age', another term for our evolving consciousness, is radical in its ideas: distrustful of large organizations, thriving when it works in small groups, respectful of diversity and counter-cultures. It is also faced with dramatic new problems - sustainability in a threatened world, for instance - and huge intellectual opportunities, such as the new physics. THE VIEW makes it plain that while we may harness science, science cannot do without the simple human understanding that comes from the heart. The new spirituality is thus personal, but it is authentic. In different ways the contributors to THE VIEW take up today's opportunities and challenges with great insight. They suggest ways in which humankind may now move forward, and describe some of the discoveries and innovations which may reshape our lives in years still to come. Chapters cover Conan Doyle, Spirituality, Health, Community, Future-thinking and Business.Contributors include Neale Donald Walsch, Ervin Laszlo, Peter Russell, Owen Dudley Edwards, Gaye Mack, Roger Straughan, Drew Pryde, Colum Hayward, Darrell Mann, James Baltzell, Errol Weiner, A&K Laszlo and Hunter Lovins.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gibson, Mitchell E., PUBLISHER: Reality Press, "My name is Mitchell." Thus begins, Your Immortal Body of Light, a fascinating and true story that takes Mitchell E. Gibson, M.D. out of his ordinary consciousness and into the inner realms of his being. Dr. Gibson was Chief Resident in Psychiatry at a large inner city medical center when he began his journey, expanding his consciousness using meditation. On his quest, he actually encounters an ancient 'god of healing' known as Djehuti (pronounced Dee-jan-tee), or Thoth. Being a psychiatrist, Gibson more than wavered before accepting that he was indeed speaking with an actual entity but the experience persisted and eventually Djehuti revealed profound information to Gibson, about the formation of the soul and the causes of mental illness. Your Immortal Body of Light is a credible and highly readable adventure into the land of magic and miracles invoked by meditation. Not since the release of Tranceformers: Shamans of the 21st Century by John Jay Harper has there been such a heartfelt sharing of what it means to be contacted by a "deceased" colleague and how to apply those insights to understanding the physics and metaphysics of creation. In this book the author travels beyond the illusive veil of "reality" to bridge the gap between cultures and centuries. Dr. Gibson reveals how Words of Power invoke transformation in body-mind-spirit as scholar Jeremy Naydler declared in Temple of the Cosmos: The Ancient Egyptian Experience of the Sacred. "It is no coincidence that Thoth, the Lord of Speech, who in the Beginning uttered the primordial sounds that thickened into tangible substances and thus brought the world into existence, was also the originator of writing." That is, your world will never be the same once you put these writings into practice to create a life that is a dream come true too. Both fascinating and chilling this is not your everyday spiritual awakening story. Lee Levinson, Emmy Winning Television Producer "Your Immortal Body of Light" is alternatively a sensitive and compelling portrait of one man's spiritual and emotional journey into the unknown. The author's recounting of his personal experiences are reflected in outstanding visual sequences and dramatic character interaction that make this true story resonate with an air of authenticity that will impact audiences everywhere. Five Stars Highly Recommended... Kirkus Reviews "Nourishing soul food for the spiritually inclined."
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lewis, Michael, PUBLISHER: W. W. Norton & Company, Moneyball is a quest for the secret of success in baseball. Following the low-budget Oakland Athletics, their larger-than-life general manger, Billy Beane, and the strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts, Michael Lewis has written not only "the single most influential baseball book ever" (Rob Neyer, Slate) but also what "may be the best book ever written on business" (Weekly Standard). I wrote this book because I fell in love with a story. The story concerned a small group of undervalued professional baseball players and executives, many of whom had been rejected as unfit for the big leagues, who had turned themselves into one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball. But the idea for the book came well before I had good reason to write it-before I had a story to fall in love with. It began, really, with an innocent question: how did one of the poorest teams in baseball, the Oakland Athletics, win so many games? With these words Michael Lewis launches us into the funniest, smartest, and most contrarian book since, well, since Liar's Poker. Moneyball is a quest for something as elusive as the Holy Grail, something that money apparently can't buy: the secret of success in baseball. The logical places to look would be the front offices of major league teams, and the dugouts, perhaps even in the minds of the players themselves. Lewis mines all these possibilities-his intimate and original portraits of big league ballplayers are alone worth the price of admission-but the real jackpot is a cache of numbers-numbers -collected over the years by a strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts: software engineers, statisticians, Wall Street analysts, lawyers and physics professors. What these geek numbers show-no, prove-is that the traditional yardsticks of success for players and teams are fatally flawed. Even the box score misleads us by ignoring the crucial importance of the humble base-on-balls. This information has been around for years, and nobody inside Major League Baseball paid it any mind. And then came Billy Beane, General Manager of the Oakland Athletics. Billy paid attention to those numbers -with the second lowest payroll in baseball at his disposal he had to-and this book records his astonishing experiment in finding and fielding a team that nobody else wanted. Moneyball is a roller coaster ride: before the season opens, Oakland must relinquish its three most prominent (and expensive) players, is written off by just about everyone, and then comes roaring back to challenge the American League record for consecutive wins. In a narrative full of fabulous characters and brilliant excursions into the unexpected, Michael Lewis shows us how and why the new baseball knowledge works. He also sets up a sly and hilarious morality tale: Big Money, like Goliath, is always supposed to win...how can we not cheer for David?
