ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Corcos, Alain F., PUBLISHER: Michigan State University Press, The idea that human races exist is a socially constructed myth that has no grounding in science. Regardless of skin, hair, or eye color, stature or physiognomy, we are all of one species. Nonetheless, scientists, social scientists, and pseudo-scientists have, for three centuries, tried vainly to prove that distinctive and separate "races" of humanity exist. These protagonists of race theory have based their flawed research on one or more of five specious assumptions: humanity can be classified into groups using identifiable physical characteristics human characteristics are transmitted "through the blood," distinct human physical characteristics are inherited together, physical features can be linked to human behavior, human groups or "races" are by their very nature unequal and, therefore, they can be ranked in order of intellectual, moral, and cultural superiority. The Myth of Human Races systematically dispels these fallacies and unravels the web of flawed research that has been woven to demonstrate the superiority of one group of people over another.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Benford, Gregory, PUBLISHER: Avon Books, Human civilization has evolved to the point at which we have begun consciously sending messages into the far future. How should we communicate who we are, what we know, to asyet-unmet intelligent beings elsewhere in both time and space? Will they be able to decipher what we say? And what information will we leave to Earth's occupants a million years hence? How can we address an unknown destiny in which human culture itself may no longer exist? Combining the logical rigor of a scientist with the lyrical beauty of a novelist, Gregory Benford explores these and other fascinating questions in a provocative analysis of humanity's attempts to make its culture immortal, to cross the immense gulf that such deep-time messages must span in order to be understood. In clear, crisp language, he confronts our growing influence on events hundreds of thousands of years into the future, and explores the possible "messages" we may transmit to our distant descendants in the language of the planet itself -- from nuclear waste to global warming to the extinction of species. We are already sending messages into nearby space; in the coming ages we will be able to launch probes accurately to other stars. Our indelible legacy to future generations, or to the next occupants of this planet, is already being constructed. As we begin our incredible journey down the path of eternity, Gregory Benford masterfully calls forth some of the intriguing, astounding, undreamed -- of futures which may await us in deep time.Human civilization has evolved to the point at which we have begun consciously sending messages into the far future. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bennett, Jackie / Grimshaw, John Michael / Ward, Bobby J., PUBLISHER: Firefly Books, The flowering plants in your garden, and their variety of color and form, are the result of hundreds of years of tradition, science, skill and intrepid exploration. They may be native plants carefully selected to provide larger blooms or a greater color range, exotic species with origins in far-distant lands, or cultivars which have been painstakingly bred to conform to an ideal of shape and form. The Gardener's Atlas explores the histories of many of the world's most popular cultivated plants and reveals how and where they grew in the wild. It relates extraordinary and uplifting tales of their discovery in some of the remotest regions on earth -- tales of determination and perseverance, of barter and exchange, and of international friendship struck up between enthusiastic horticulturists from the s onward. There are insights into how plants that are now simply decorative were once used for medicinal or cosmetic purposes, for food or ritual, and into how they earned their common or Latin names. This is a book which cannot fail to enrich your gardening experience.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bearanger, Marie / Ethan, Eric And Marie Bearanger / Ethan, Eric, PUBLISHER: Gareth Stevens Publishing, No place on Earth can match a coral reef, close up, for the brilliant and abundant wildlife that lives there. Colors of the Sea presents all the mesmerizing beauty of this ancient ecosystem in dramatic full-page photographs and accurate, informative text. In this series you'll encounter the marine behavior that fascinates divers: the symbiotic relationships of cleaning species and predators many times their size; the camouflage tactics of hunters from the lethargic scorpion fish to the nimble hawk fishes; the startling and colorful sea slugs; and much, much more. This rare and exciting look into the world of coral reefs will fascinate and inform every reader. Coral reefs are made out of very hard limestone deposits. It is surprising that so many fish and other kinds of sea life have adapted to feed on the tiny polyps that both produce and are protected by the reefs. Some fish can actually grind coral reefs to sand. Other animals scrape along the reef's surface, pulling polyps from the coral pockets. These and many other unusual feeding strategies are presented in this fascinating book.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Card, Orson Scott, PUBLISHER: Tor Books, This boxed set contains "Ender's Game," "Speaker for the Dead," "Xenocide," and "Children of the Mind." "Ender's Game" Winner of the Hugo and Nebula Awards In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race's next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn't make the cut--young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training. Ender's skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister. Is Ender the general Earth needs? But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender's two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives. "Speaker for the Dead" In the aftermath of his terrible war, Ender Wiggin disappeared, and a powerful voice arose: The Speaker for the Dead, who told the true story of the Bugger War. Now, long years later, a second alien race has been discovered, but again the aliens' ways are strange and frightening...again, humans die. And it is only the Speaker for the Dead, who is also Ender Wiggin the Xenocide, who has the courage to confront the mystery...and the truth. "Xenocide" The war for survival of the planet Lusitania will be fought in the hearts of a child named Gloriously Bright. On Lusitania, Ender found a world where humans and Pequeninos and the Hive Queen could all live together; where three very different intelligent species could find common ground at last. Or so he thought. Lusitania also harbors the descolada, a virus that kills all humans it infects, but which the Pequeninos require in order to become adults. The Starways Congress so fears the effects of the descolada, should it escape from Lusitania, that they have ordered the destruction of the entire planet, and all who live there. The Fleet is on its way, a second xenocide seems inevitable. "Children of the Mind" The planet Lusitania is home to three sentient species: the Pequeninos; a larg
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kress, W. John / Barrett, Gary W. / Mayr, Ernst, PUBLISHER: Smithsonian Books, In the twentieth century, scientists in the relatively new field of biology played an important role in exposing the threats of environmental degradation, loss of species diversity, habitat fragmentation, scarce energy resources, and human population growth. In the essays found in A New Century of Biology, some of the world's most notable biologists consider how their discipline must evolve to address these problems in the twenty-first century. The next one hundred years, the contributors argue, will likely be dominated by breakthroughs in evolutionary biology and systems ecology, by an increased need for scientists to integrate research, teaching, and service missions, and by problem-solving ventures on greater spatial and temporal scales. Because human activity and increased population will continue to have a profound impact on the environment, biologists must define an effective strategy for integrating the biological sciences with global economics and human social structure. The eleven contributors are leaders in the fields of ecology and evolution, morphology and development, behavior, microbiology, ecosystem energetics and biogeochemistry, biodiversity and conservation biology, and human sciences. While acknowledging the real problems their discipline must address, they offer an optimistic agenda for the future.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Aksakov, Sergei Timofeevich / Timofeevich-Aksakov, Sergei / Aksakov, S. T., PUBLISHER: Northwestern University Press, The companion volume to his popular Notes on Fishing, Notes of a Provincial Wildfowler is Sergei Aksakov's guide to the bird species of his native Russia. Written in a style that invites comparison to the works of Gilbert White and Thomas Coward, Aksakov's volume combines a naturalist's sensibility with a literary skill that elevates the work beyond ordinary environmental writing. Notes of a Provincial Wildfowler is filled with precise descriptions of the various game that it treats: detailed accounts of the behavior of birds, observations on their life cycles, and lyrical discourses on the habitats -- marsh, water, and forest -- found in the author's home region. Aksakov's deep fondness for his homeland permeates his Notes, and he contrasts a gentleman's affectionate observations on both hunter and hunted (Aksakov's passion for the habits and habitats of his subjects are in stark contrast with his enthusiasm for the shooting and eating of his quarry) with an expertly conveyed atmosphere of personal and national nostalgia. Offering a rich multitude of viewpoints -- philosophical, literary, linguistic, ethnographic, and environmental -- Notes of a Provincial Wildfowler will appeal to a wide audience of readers, from birders to historians to those who relish fine literature.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Smith, Joe / Joe Smith, PUBLISHER: Routledge, Some of the greatest challenges facing humanity, such as climate change and biodiversity loss, have enormous implications for economic, social and environmental security. Yet the significance of these issues is not reflected in media reporting. A few visually strong stories of conflicts, or threats to charismatic species or beautiful places, such as those of the Brent Spar or the Exxon Valdez, make the headlines. However, the media's appetite for novelty, personality and drama stands in the way of effective reporting of slowly unfolding stories that are fraught with uncertainty. Clearly, journalists and reporters face difficulty in portraying the complex interplay between science, policy and values that underlies many of these issues. But, equally, there is reluctance on the part of the academic and policy communities to adapt themselves to the needs and methods of the media. The Daily Globe represents the state of knowledge about media treatment and public understanding of key environmental issues around the world, incorporating a wealth of expertise and insight from distinguished journalists, politicians, researchers and environmentalists. The book offers practical examples of successful new forms of collaboration and communication and lays the foundation for effective future strategies aimed at informing public debate on the choices and challenges presented by global environmental change.

Florida's most celebrated environmentalist, the author of "The Everglades: River of Grass, " wrote even then about protecting South Florida's fragile ecosystem and the state's endangered species, about the dangers of short-sighted land development, and about Florida history. The nine stories in this first collection take place in a scattering of South Florida settings--Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, the Tamiami Trail, the Keys, the Everglades--and reveal the drama of hurricanes and plane crashes, of kidnappers, escaped convicts, and smugglers. Editor Kevin McCarthy relates each story to Douglas's life and points out the autobiographical touches which surface frequently in her stories.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hanna, Robert, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), In "Rationality and Logic," Robert Hanna argues that logic is intrinsically psychological and that human psychology is intrinsically logical. He claims that logic is cognitively constructed by rational animals (including humans) and that rational animals are essentially logical animals. In order to do so, he defends the broadly Kantian thesis that all (and only) rational animals possess an innate cognitive "logic faculty." Hanna's claims challenge the conventional philosophical wisdom that sees logic as a fully formal or "topic-neutral" science irreconcilably separate from the species- or individual-specific focus of empirical psychology. Logic and psychology went their separate ways after attacks by Frege and Husserl on logical psychologism--the explanatory reduction of logic to empirical psychology. Hanna argues, however, that--despite the fact that logical psychologism is false--there is an essential link between logic and psychology. Rational human animals constitute the basic class of cognizers or thinkers studied by cognitive psychology; given the connection between rationality and logic that Hanna claims, it follows that the nature of logic is significantly revealed to us by cognitive psychology. Hanna's proposed "logical cognitivism" has two important consequences: the recognition by logically oriented philosophers that psychologists are their colleagues in the metadiscipline of cognitive science; and radical changes in cognitive science itself. Cognitive science, Hanna argues, is not at bottom a natural science; it is both an objective or truth-oriented science and a normative human science, as is logic itself.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Doctorow, Cory / Stross, Charles, PUBLISHER: Tor Books, Welcome to the fractured future, at the dusk of the twenty-first century. Earth has a population of roughly a billion hominids. For the most part, they are happy with their lot, living in a preserve at the bottom of a gravity well. Those who are unhappy have emigrated, joining one or another of the swarming densethinker clades that fog the inner solar system with a dust of molecular machinery so thick that it obscures the sun. The splintery metaconsciousness of the solar-system has largely sworn off its pre-post-human cousins dirtside, but its minds sometimes wander...and when that happens, it casually spams Earth's networks with plans for cataclysmically disruptive technologies that emulsify whole industries, cultures, and spiritual systems. A sane species would ignore these get-evolved-quick schemes, but there's always someone who'll take a bite from the forbidden apple. So until the overminds bore of stirring Earth's anthill, there's Tech Jury Service: random humans, selected arbitrarily, charged with assessing dozens of new inventions and ruling on whether to let them loose. Young Huw, a technophobic, misanthropic Welshman, has been selected for the latest jury, a task he does his best to perform despite an itchy technovirus, the apathy of the proletariat, and a couple of truly awful moments on bathroom floors.

The Tip Tornado Ultra Lite ST has deceptive power despite its fine dimensions. There are many times when a standard beach caster outguns the conditions. Inside calm estuaries, harbours and sea lochs there is a definite need for light gear which brings finesse to the situation. Changes within sea angling including variation in population numbers of many species means more fishing is done from the shore in summer style conditions. For small, plentiful fish the Ultra Lite brings big advantages including the use of lighter lines and bait presentation is smooth without the jerking action imposed by stiffer rods. Pressure on smaller hooks is also improved because the cushioning effect of the tip and bite sensitivity is better than ever. The Century Ultra Lite ST is great news for the angler who still wants to cast 4ozs plus bait and really enjoy a light, responsive high performance rod when bigger bonus fish are taken. The Ultra Lite ST is available in 2 lengths - 11'6" (staggered butt section) and 13' (equal length sections).
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Layzer, Judith A., PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), Scholars, scientists, and policymakers have hailed ecosystem-based management (EBM) as a remedy for the perceived shortcomings of the centralized, top-down, expert-driven environmental regulatory framework established in the United States in the late s and early s. EBM entails collaborative, landscape-scale planning and flexible, adaptive implementation. But although scholars have analyzed aspects of EBM for more than a decade, until now there has been no systematic empirical study of the overall approach. In "Natural Experiments, " Judith Layzer provides a detailed assessment of whether EBM delivers in practice the environmental benefits it promises in theory. She does this by examining four nationally known EBM initiatives (the Balcones Canyonlands Conservation Program in Austin, Texas, the San Diego Multiple Species Program, the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, and the California Bay-Delta Program) and three comparison cases that used more conventional regulatory approaches (Arizona's Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan and efforts to restore Florida's Kissimmee River and California's Mono Basin). Layzer concludes that projects that set goals based on stakeholder collaboration, rather than through conventional politics, are less likely to result in environmental improvement, largely because the pursuit of consensus drives planners to avoid controversy and minimize short-term costs. Layzer's resolutely practical focus cuts through the ideological and theoretical arguments for and against EBM to identify strategies that hold genuine promise for restoring the ecological resilience of our landscapes.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Terrell, John Edward, PUBLISHER: Praeger, Ever since Darwin, the world has been struggling with the mystery of human diversity. As the historian Peter Bowler has written, "an evolutionary interpretation of the history of life on the earth must inevitably extend itself to include the origins of the human race." But this has proved to be a difficult and controversial task. Understanding human origins means accounting not only for the obvious differences between people and cultures around the world, but also for the unity of Homo sapiens as a single biological species. As Stephen Jay Gould has said, "flexibility is the hallmark of human evolution." Because so much of who we are is learned rather than genetically predetermined, a satisfactory understanding of human evolution--to use old parlance--must account both for the human body and the human soul. At any single moment of time, it is always possible to find instances where people seem to live in their own world, speak in their own distinctive ways, and have their own exclusive cultural traits and practices. Over the course of time, however, it is not so easy to find places where these dimensions of our diversity stay together. The essays in this collection show why we must stop thinking that "race," language, and culture go together, and why we should be wary of the commonsense beliefs that human races exist and that people who speak different languages come from fundamentally different biological lineages.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Watson, Paul / Watson, P. F. / Holt, W. V., PUBLISHER: CRC Press, There is a growing awareness of a worldwide reduction in biodiversity and the urgent need to develop ways to redress the problem. This is the first major book devoted to the subject of genetic resource banking (GRB) and its role in preserving global animal biodiversity. In Cryobanking the Genetic Resource, expert contributors provide the non-specialist with an overview of the subject and the practical techniques associated with GRB. The book presents a basic introduction to the concepts, and then points the way to relevant literature for those who wish to develop practical applications. The first section deals with the potential contribution of GRB to biodiversity protection, while the second section offers an introduction to the basic cryobiology of gametes and embryos. In the first section, genetic considerations for planning interventions are discussed, together with disease control measures. This section explores related reproductive technologies necessary for the use of cryopreserved gametes and embryos, as well as a range of other issues such as ownership and security of stored material, and the size and location of cryopreserved material. The second section offers a thorough review of the literature on cryopreservation of spermatozoa, oocytes, and embryos. It gathers species into related groups for ease of reference, and does not assume extensive specialist knowledge so that newcomers to the field can make the best use of the available research. This book is an essential resource for zoologists and conservationists with an interest in genetic management and captive breeding, and also for students involved in biodiversity issues, conservation, and assisted reproduction.
