Nonparametric Density Estimation: The L1 View

Nonparametric Density Estimation: The L1 View

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Devroye, Luc / Gyorfi, Laszlo, PUBLISHER: John Wiley & Sons, The first systematic single-source examination of density estimates. It develops, from first principles, the natural'' theory for density estimation, L1, and shows why the classical L2 theory masks some fundamental properties of density estimates. Chapters comprehensively treat consistency, lower bounds for rates of convergence, rates of convergence in L1, the transformed kernel estimate, applications in discrimination, and estimators based on orthogonal series. All theorems are fully proven in rigorous, step-by-step detail. Additionally, the relevant recent literature is tied in with the more classic works of Parzen, Rosenblatt, and others.

Meta-Analytic Procedures for Social Research

Meta-Analytic Procedures for Social Research

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rosenthal, Robert, PUBLISHER: Sage Publications (CA), Rosenthal sets out to describe meta-analytic procedures (the quantitative summary of a research domain) in sufficient detail for readers either to carry them out for themselves, or evaluate the procedures when used by others. The book addresses itself to techniques for solving the problems of poor cumulation and small effects -- both of which are sources of pessimism in the social and behavioural sciences. The level of mathematical sophistication required is that of elementary algebra and introductory data analysis, and the book is designed to be used by advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and researchers in the social and behavioural sciences.

WIN32 Multithreaded Programming [With Included]

WIN32 Multithreaded Programming [With Included]

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cohen, Aaron / Woodring, Mike, PUBLISHER: O'Reilly Media, Many Windows developers still write code as if their application is a single entity that, while it is running, has complete control of all system resources. This legacy from the days of DOS means that developers frequently fail to take advantage of Win32's support of multiple threads of execution to improve their application's performance or to enhance its functionality. For instance, a main thread can handle interactions with the user, while a background "worker" thread can handle repainting the application window or performing some background calculations. But multithreaded programming means more than adding threads; it also requires that the code be thread-safe. "Win32 Multithread Programming explains the concepts of multithreaded programs, thus providing the developer with the knowledge necessary to skillfully construct efficient and complex applications. From basic thread synchronization using mutexes and semaphores, to advanced topics like creating reusable thread pools or implementing a deferred processing queue, the book uses real-world applications and carefully constructed examples to illustrate the principles of multithreaded programming. Some of the topics include: How the Windows operating systems handle threadsMultithreading primitives in the Win32 APITechniques for generating thread-safe dynamic link librariesAdvanced techniques for thread synchronizationBasic scenarios for synchronizing threadsCommon designs for building multithreaded user interfaces The CD-ROM accompanying the book features Mcl, the authors' C++ class library for multithreaded programming, which both wraps multithreaded API functions and easily supports more complex multithreaded scenarios. Forprogrammers using MFC, an additional library, Mcl4Mfc, is included for MFC compatibility. "Win32 Multithread Programming is an essential resource for any developer interested in learning about Win32 multithreaded programming in order to create high-performance, effective applications.

Next Generation Wireless Networks

Next Generation Wireless Networks

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Tekinay, Sirin, PUBLISHER: Springer, This book is an organized and edited work of enabling technologies for the applications and services needed for future wireless networks. Its focus is the defining architectures, services and applications, with coverage of all layers, i.e., from the physical layer to the information handling layers of the network. The new wireless network architectures are geared specifically for enabling mobility and location-enhanced applications. Presented first are tutorials on new network architectures, including a discussion of "infostations," the role of satellites in broadband wireless access, and the "infocity" concept. The next three chapters present material that describes the state-of-the-art in wireless geolocation systems (including "assisted GPS"), alternatives for wireless geolocation, and empirical data on wireless geolocation capabilities. The first of the last two chapters demonstrates the use of location information in next generation wireless networks, with coverage of real-time geolocation measurements in mobile connectivity. The final chapter portrays the creation of a "killer application" in wireless networks. Leading researchers in the field have contributed to this volume. Next Generation Wireless Networks is essential reading for engineers, researchers, application design specialists, and product managers in the field of wireless network architectures and wireless geolocation.

Methods for Investigating Localized Clustering of Disease

Methods for Investigating Localized Clustering of Disease

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Alexander / Alexander, F. E. / Boyle, P., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Since the beginning of this century, "clusters" of certain forms of cancer--particularly leukemia in children and Hodgkin's disease--have been reported around locations of specific environmental hazards. Identification of such clusters is not an easy task, since there is no exact definition of what a cluster is. This monograph describes the variety of statististical techniques cuurently in use, and their application to simulated data-sets chosen to represent a range of clustering scenarios. The scientists who developed these techniques were invited to apply their methodology to these data-sets and to share their conclusions in this volume. In addition, these researchers describe in complete detail how they proceeded with the analysis, since an element of subjectivity figures prominently in the application and interpretation of some of these methods. The identification and analysis of disease clusters can yield significant clues in epidemiologic research, and as such will continue to be an important subject of cancer research and epidemiology for the foreseeable future.

Integrating Quantitative and Qualitative Research in

Integrating Quantitative and Qualitative Research in

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bamberger, Michael / Bamberger, Michael, PUBLISHER: World Bank Publications, "Much of the early work on poverty was highly quantitative:... It became increasingly clear, however, that while numbers are essential for policy and monitoring purposes, it is also important to understand people's perception of poverty and their mechanisms for coping with poverty and other situations of extreme economic and social stress." Researchers have recognized over the past few years that quantitative analysis of the incidence and trends in poverty, while essential for national economic development planning, must be complemented by qualitative methods that help planners and managers understand the cultural, social, political, and institutional context within which projects are designed and implemented. This report is based on a two-day workshop held in June , where outside research specialists and World Bank staff discussed the importance of integrating these research methods. The participants reviewed experiences in the use of mixed-method approaches in Bank research and project design. This report is a result of those discussions. The report examines the need for integrated research approaches in social and economic development, presents case studies of integrated approaches in practice, and talks about lessons learned.
