The piano is very prominent in Sedgwick's arrangement. Ozzy's backing parts are mixed up high to show off his distinctive singing. A very interesting track to hear indeed! The B-side of the single was "Have You Ever Been Loved". It was recorded for Birmingham Free Music, which was an independent label. The backing tracks were recorded with the help of other local musicians. Some of these 45-singles were distributed to local pubs in Birmingham to be played in their jukeboxes. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Atwood, Margaret, PUBLISHER: Canongate Books, The story of Penelope -- as told by herself. In The Odyssey, Penelope -- daughter of King Icarius of Sparta, and the cousin of the beautiful Helen of Troy -- is portrayed as the quintessential faithful wife. Atwood's dazzling retelling of the old myth is as haunting as it is wise and compassionate, as disturbing as it is entertaining. With incomparable wit and verve, she gives the story of Penelope new life and reality. "Homer's Odyssey is not the only version of the story. Mythic material was originally oral, and also local--a myth would be told one way in one place and quite differently in another. I have drawn on material other than The Odyssey, especially for the details of Penelope's parentage, her early life and marriage, and the scandalous rumours circulating about her. I've chosen to give the telling of the story to Penelope and to her twelve hanged maids. The Maids form a chanting and singing Chorus which focuses on two questions that must pose themselves after any close reading of The Odyssey: what led to the hanging of the maids, and what was Penelope really up to? The story as told in The Odyssey doesn't hold water: there are too many inconsistencies. I've always been haunted by the hanged maids; and, in The Penelopiad, so is Penelope herself. --from Margaret Atwood's Introduction to The Penelopiad "From the Hardcover edition.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Endicott, Marina, PUBLISHER: Doubleday Canada, Here is the eagerly anticipated new novel from a brilliant writer whose last book, Good to a Fault, was shortlisted for the prestigious Giller Prize and won the Commonwealth Prize for Canada and the Caribbean. The Little Shadows revolves around three sisters in the world of vaudeville before and during the First World War. We follow the lives of all three in turn: Aurora, the eldest and most beautiful, who is sixteen when the book opens; thoughtful Clover, a year younger; and the youngest sister, joyous headstrong sprite Bella, who is thirteen. The girls, overseen by their fond but barely coping Mama, are forced to make their living as a singing act after the untimely death of their father. They begin with little besides youth and hope, but Marina Endicott's genius is to show how the three girls slowly and steadily evolve into true artists even as they navigate their way to adulthood among a cast of extraordinary characters - some of them charming charlatans, some of them unpredictable eccentrics, and some of them just ordinary-seeming humans with magical gifts. Using her gorgeous prose and extraordinary insight, Endicott lures us onto the brightly lit stage and then into the little shadows that lurk behind the curtain, and reveals how the art of vaudeville -- in all its variety, madness, melodrama, hilarity and sorrow -- echoes the art of life itself.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Worrill, Jack, PUBLISHER: Xulon Press, Jack Worrill is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, and a graduate of Georgia Tech. He spent thirty five years as an advertising account executive and copy writer, the last portion of that time in his own one man agency. Over a forty year period he taught Bible to Sunday School classes ranging in age from three years old to what he calls "65 to Glory." He began singing in his church choir as a freshman in college and considered studying for the music ministry. However, the Lord had other plans, and it was only after forty-eight years-many of which were passed as lay song leader, occasional supply as choir leader and in serving several churches as interim music minister-that Jack was called as Minister of Music to a small church in Metropolitan Atlanta. He currently earns his livelihood repairing, restoring and re-caning chairs, rockers and wicker furniture. He demonstrates the art of chair caning at craft shows and state fairs, and teaches chair caning classes several times each year. He and his wife Lyn live in Marietta, Georgia, near their three married daughters, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. It is from this varied life experience that Jack's Parables for Plain People are drawn. They are all based upon his keen awareness of the presence of the Holy Spirit, purposefully working out His Will, in even the most ordinary daily events, for those who put their faith and trust in Him.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: McGregory, Jerrilyn / Montell, William Lynwood, PUBLISHER: University Press of Mississippi, Wiregrass (Aristida stricta) refers to a genus of flora that depends on fire ecology for germination. Although its growth is widespread from the Chesapeake Bay to the eastern brim of Texas, only one region has acquired the word for vernacular recognition. Ranging over parts of three states, Wiregrass Country extends from north of Savannah, sweeps across rolling meadows into the southwest Georgia coastal plain, fans over into the southeastern corner of Alabama, and dips into the northwestern panhandle of Florida. This book is the first comprehensive study of the folklife of this unique region and its people. Historically underpopulated, economically poor, and predominantly white until the Reconstruction period following the Civil War, Wiregrass Country is a rare stretch of the American South whose economic and cultural development has been shaped more by yeoman farming and frontier attitudes than by King Cotton, plantations, slave-holders, and slaves. Eventually, Wiregrass Country experienced a more diverse influx of residents -tenant farmers, African Americans, and northern industrialists. In many ways, however, it has remained characteristically rural. Few malls have invaded it, and high watertowers are more prevalent than stately court houses and city halls. This study typifies the population within the tristate region as communal-minded, frugal, and hardworking. Its values gain full expression in characteristic musical and verbal arts, such as Sacred Harp singing and personal narratives about the supernatural. Although virtually neglected by historians and folklorists, the region is a trove of cultural history preserved in folktales, music, festivals, yardscapes, hunting, andfishing.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Olson, Sigurd F. / Backes, David, PUBLISHER: University of Minnesota Press, Sigurd F. Olson was the most beloved wilderness advocate of his generation. His renowned writings, including the nature classics The Singing Wilderness and Listening Point, evoke the singular beauty and richness of the northern woods and lakes and reveal a philosophy of preservation that is as eloquent and relevant today as when he first wrote. The wilderness was the spring of happiness in Olson's life, and he devoted himself to the pursuit of sharing this magic with others and ensuring its future existence. Revealing Olson's understanding and love of wilderness, Spirit of the North gathers together for the first time the most quotable and memorable of his well-loved passages gleaned not only from published works, but also from personal letters, journal entries, and speeches. Reflective, anecdotal, and universally poignant, this book is a chronology of thoughts and experiences that ebb and flow in their assuredness and reveal the whole man, a wilderness icon mired in doubt while he doggedly refused to abandon his dreams. David Backes, preeminent Olson biographer and scholar, contributes an introduction to each chapter, illuminating the historical context and personal significance of Olson's words. Frequently, during a quiet moment of contemplation on a canoe trip, Olson would read brief passages of poetry and prose scrawled on small scraps of paper for inspiration and peace of mind. Similarly, Spirit of the North is the ideal wilderness companion, passionate, authentic, and deeply reverent of the natural world. Sigurd F. Olson () introduced generations of Americans to the importance of wilderness through his work as a conservation activist and popular writer. He served aspresident of the Wilderness Society and the National Parks Association and as a consultant to the federal government on wilderness preservation and ecological problems. He earned many honors, including the highest possible from the Sierra Club, the National Wildlife Federation, and the Izaak Walton League. David Backes is the author of A Wilderness Within: The Life of Sigurd F. Olson (Minnesota, ), winner of the Small Press Book Award for biography, and editor of The Meaning of Wilderness: Essential Articles and Speeches by Sigurd F. Olson (Minnesota, ). Backes is also the author of Canoe Country: An Embattled Wilderness () and The Wilderness Companion ().
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Windeler, Robert, PUBLISHER: Birch Lane Press, In she celebrated fifty years in show business, having made her professional singing debut at the London Hippodrome in -- at age twelve. In the half century since those last days of British vaudeville through her smash Broadway comeback in Victor/Victoria, Julie Andrews has triumphed as an entertainer. At thirteen Andrews performed for the Queen of England; at nineteen she was a Broadway star. At twenty-one, as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, she became a theatrical legend. By thirty, she was the highest-paid and most beloved actress in the world, with an Academy Award for her first movie, Mary Poppins, and almost instant worldwide box-office championship with The Sound of Music. Her remarkable body of work had stamped her indelibly with an image she would come to hate; the quintessence of perky, wholesome innocence. After two flop musicals, Star and Darling Lili, the press and the public seemed to ignore her. She had turned into box-office poison in Hollywood. But even in semi-exile she worked in an Emmy-winning television variety series, wrote two successful children's books, and concentrated on her growing family. Julie Andrews had become a superstar before she became her own person, and now she made up for lost time. When she reemerged in movies in the s, it was in sensationally different roles, many of them created for her by her husband, Blake Edwards. After Duet for One, The Man Who Loved Women, and A Fine Romance there was no going back to Mary Poppins. In the s she returned to concert tours, musical recordings, and Broadway. She also returned to controversy, by refusing her nomination for an almost certain Tony Award to stand with the "egregiouslyoverlooked" -- the rest of the cast and crew, especially her writer-director husband. Here at last is the full life story of Julie Andrews -- her meteoric rise, her devastating fall, and her remarkable comeback; from the little English girl with the freaky four-octave, crystalline voice to the dynamic legend who has outlasted her critics. Robert Windeler's affectionate and insightful biography reveals the full-blooded woman behind the high and low notes.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Giroud, Francoise / Stock, R. M., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Born in , the daughter of a Viennese painter, Alma Mahler inspired the passionate love and devotion of an astonishing array of creative artists. She married three of them--the composer Gustav Mahler, the architect Walter Gropius, and the writer Franz Werfel--and had a host of admirers and lovers, including the painters Oscar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, and Gustav Klimpt. The composer Alban Berg dedicated his opera Wozzeck to her and a violin concerto to the memory of her daughter, Manon, who died of polio. In Alma Mahler, Francoise Giroud provides a spirited portrait of one of Europe's great femme fatales, ranging from her childhood (she was raised on a steady diet of Nietzche) to her heyday as a leading figure in Europe's art scene, to her later life as an exile in California and New York. We meet a woman of remarkable beauty and unconventional mind, the possessor of a fine, demanding intelligence, who was highly conscious of herself as a member of the elite, a woman never truly conquered by her lovers. Her last husband, Franz Werfel, called her "one of the very few sorceresses of our time." And indeed when she appeared, her presence attracted all eyes as she moved like a queen through a room. And what eyes she drew. Virtually all the great figures of 19th-century Vienna march through these pages, including Sigmund Freud, Richard Strauss, Arnold Schonberg, Hugo van Hofmannsthal, Karl Kraus, and Elias Canetti, and Giroud pens striking portraits of each. There are also many memorable scenes: Franz Werfel singing Verdi arias with James Joyce in a Paris cafe; the young Gropius, having an affair with then-married Alma, chased from the Mahler home by guard dogs and taking refuge under a bridge; Kokoschka, after his affair with Alma has died, commissioning a life-sized doll, a faithful reproduction of his former lover. But the heart of the book is Alma's marriage to Mahler. We read Alma's own first impression of Mahler--"He is terribly nervous. He paced around the room like a wild animal. He's pure oxygen. You get burnt if you go too near." Unfortunately for Mahler, his attempt to subjugate his young wife to his will--"you have only one profession from now on: to make me happy"--led to disaster, and he himself was burnt. Alma Mahler stood at the center of the creative world, the intimate friend (if not lover) of the major artists of her age, and Giroud paints an unforgettable portrait. It was awarded France's Grand Prix litteraire de la femme in .

In his most exuberant book yet, Richard Powers asks us to consider the big questions facing humankind as we begin to rewrite our own existence. " Powers'] cerebral new novel offers a chilling examination of the life we're reengineering with our chromosomes and brain chemistry... Powers sticks so closely to the state of current medical science and popular culture that this isn't so much a warning as a diagnosis. And as with any frightening diagnosis, you'll be torn between denial and a desperate urge to talk about it... With "Generosity," Powers has performed a dazzling cross-disciplinary feat, linking the slippery nature of 'creative nonfiction' to the moral conundrums of genetic engineering. Although you might expect a novel so weighted with medical and philosophical arguments to flatten its characters into brittle stereotypes, ultimately that's the most impressive aspect of this meditation on happiness and humanness. As "Generosity" drives toward its surprising conclusion, these characters grow more complex and poignant, increasingly baffled by the challenge and the opportunity of remaking ourselves to our heart's content."--Ron Charles, "The Washington Post Book World" "For the past 20 years or so, Richard Powers seems to have been engaged in a prodigious attempt to redress the imbalance of knowledge that was the subject of C.
