While there have been some scattered references to the unique roles these early "race women" played in effecting social change, until now few scholars have considered the rhetorical strategies they adopted to develop their powerful arguments. In this chronological anthology, Shirley Wilson Logan highlights the public addresses of these women, beginning with Maria W. Stewart's speech at Franklin Hall in , believed to be the first delivered to an audience of men and women by an American-born woman. In her speech, she focused on the plight of the Northern free black. Sojourner Truth spoke in at the Akron, Ohio, Women's Rights Convention not only for the rights of black women but also for the rights of all oppressed nineteenth-century women. Frances Ellen Watkins Harper struggled with the conflict between universal suffrage and suffrage for black men. Anna Julia Cooper chastised her unique audience of black Episcopalian clergy for their failure to continue the tradition of the elevation of womanhood initiated by Christianity and especially for their failure to support the struggling Southern black woman. Ida B. Wells's rhetoric targeted mob violence directed at Southern black men. Her speech was delivered less than a year after her inaugural lecture on this issue--following a personal encounter with mob violence in Memphis. Fannie Barrier Williams and Victoria Earle Matthews advocated social and educational reforms to improve the plight of Southern black women. These speeches--all delivered between and --are stirring proof that, despite obstacles of race and gender, these women still had the courage to mount the platform in defense of the oppressed. Tales of their alleged misdeeds ranged from petit larceny to incest to murder, turning them into a band of provincial monsters. And, as if to cinch the case against them, all the daughters in the family had fingernails that were black and twisted, as though corruption sprouted directly from their fingertips. They kept to themselves, the girls bearing a disturbing shell-shocked look in their pale eyes, until they all simply picked up and left one day without a word, providing the town with yet more fodder for gossip. Only later, when I wrote about thefictional Mayborns, a much fiercer version of this real-life family, did I wonder about their aura of impending doom. Had they simply become trapped within the town's collective fiction of them, or were they truly a monstrous second cousin to the average human? For me, my first novel, The Average Human, will always be associated with schlepping bowls of pad thai, since I wrote the bulk of it while I waitressed in a Thai restaurant. Another waitress at the restaurant was also writing a novel, and together we made a pact to exchange at least two pages of writing every day. We kept the storylines and the characters alive by speculating about them endlessly, in between hauling plates of curried chicken or while we were polishing silverware. I'm sure we annoyed the hell out of the rest of the wait staff, but we finished our novels within months of each other. And we were each other's constant reminder that we were writers, not waitresses, despite the peanut sauce stains on our shirtsleeves. The Average Human is vivid, flawlessly written, and perfectly constructed. It's easy to remember whole passages at a time, because they instantly take root in your imagination. Ellen is the type of writer that readers will clamor for more of as soon as they finish this book.--P.W.

CAPODANNO A VILLA FARINACCI
In occasione della notte di San Silvestro, lunedì 31 dicembre a partire dalle ore Villa Farinacci torna a essere il luogo della città dove larte incontra lo svago con un grande evento gratuito, finanziato dal Municipio IV e realizzato da Roerso Mondo Associazione Culturale, al quale sono invitati a partecipare i cittadini di ogni età. Il grande concerto di Capodanno presso Villa Farinacci incontra la tradizione e allo stesso tempo diventa contemporaneo in una travolgente festa popolare a base di musica dal vivo e cabaret, brindisi e spettacoli pirotecnici, Dj set e silent disco, per salutare tutti insieme il nuovo anno. La notte del 31 dicembre, la Villa vestirà i colori delle proiezioni luminose che ne animeranno le facciate, accendendola come un faro nella notte. Il suo parco ospiterà la grande festa condotta da Manuel dAmario, attore di cinema e di teatro, il quale allieterà la serata con la sua personalità eclettica. Ad aprire la serata danzante, sarà Titti Smeriglio e Band che inaugura il suo tour italiano con un live pieno di energia e passione, dove si canta e si balla sulle note di Non So Dirti Di No, primo album ricco di sound anni '60 e '70, nato sulla scia del successo dell'EP desordio che lha anche accreditata come songwriter per televisione e cinema. A seguire, la band di Alessandro Nosenzo, cantautore abruzzese e romano dadozione, le cui sonorità uniscono il folk della sua regione dorigine alle musiche popolari dellEst Europa con influenze gipsy e jazz manouche, che lo hanno portato a condividere il palco con artisti rinomati quali Bandabardò, Africa unite, o a partecipare come ospite al Arianofolk Festival insieme a Daniele Silvestri. Unatmosfera festosa che grazie a queste sonorità coinvolge il pubblico in una irrefrenabile voglia di ballare. Suoni, musiche e giochi di colore animeranno la serata preparando il pubblico ad accogliere il nuovo anno in festa. Brinderemo, dunque, con gli occhi allinsù mentre uno spettacolo di fuochi incornicerà la Villa. La festa però non è finita! A seguire, si spegneranno le luci del palco e lo spazio esterno di Villa Farinacci diventerà una dance floor sotto le stelle dove ballare sino allalba, ascoltando la musica che si preferisce senza disturbare i vicini, grazie alla silent disco sintonizzandosi su una delle tre linee audio trasmesse contemporaneamente da tre deejay live: Dj Manuel dAmario aka Gary Baldo (Blue Line); Michele Moi aka Ziganviolin (Red Line); Jacopo Moi aka Dj Falange (Green Line). Il grande evento di Capodanno sarà preceduto da altri due eventi di lancio dedicati ai bambini e alle famiglie. Sabato 22 dicembre presso il quartiere di San Basilio, una giornata dedicata al divertimento con tanti artisti di strada, acrobati e musicisti.
