Nothing Grows by Moonlight

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Nedreaas, Torborg / Lee, Bibbi, PUBLISHER: University of Nebraska Press, "Nothing Grows by Moonlight" ("Av maneskinn gror det ingenting"), first published in Norway in , is sure to be talked about. It is a moving novel of love, betrayal, search, and sorrow that introduces a major twentieth-century Norwegian writer, Torborg Nedreaas, to an English-speaking audience. Under the surface of a dramatic story rich in atmosphere lurk social themes that will be of particular interest to American and British readers. At the beginning, a man picks up a woman in a railway station. "It is really very difficult to say what it was that made me notice her. It was probably many things, my own mood, the weather, the emptiness of that particular day." It turns out that she simply wants, desperately needs, someone to talk to. He listens to her story, spellbound, and from that night he is haunted forever by the clear, honest revelation of a broken soul--as the reader will be. The woman describes her hopeless involvement with her teacher and lover, who continues to see her, always to reject her, long after he is married. Obsessively, she returns to situations in which she is abused. Finally, in confronting her past without self-pity, without denying personal responsibility, she realizes how much her self-destructive behavior owes to a capitalistic and patriarchal system that forces women into roles that make them emotionally and economically dependent. A powerful subthemes of "Nothing Grows by Moonlight" concerns abortion, which Nedreaas sees not as a crime to be punished but as a tragedy that would not be necessary in a more equitable and caring society. But what finally lingers in the reader's mind is the fully developed image of a woman, buffeted by life, coming to terms with God and man.

Their daughter Anna yearns for her mother's unguarded affection, and eventually learns there is value in restraint. But Anna, a Caribbean American immigrant, finds that lesson harder to accept when, eager to assimilate in her new country, she discovers that a gap yawns between her and American-born citizens. The head of a specialized imprint at a major publishing house, Anna is soon challenged for her position by an ambitious upstart who accuses her of not really understanding American culture, particularly African American culture. Her job at stake, Anna turns for advice to her boyfriend Paul, a Caribbean American himself, who attempts to convince her that immigrants must accept limitations on their freedom in America. Told in spare and transcendent prose, "Boundaries" is a riveting immigrant story, a fascinating look into the world of contemporary book publishing, a beautiful extension of the exploration of family dynamics that began in Nunez's previous novel "Anna In-Between," and a heartwarming love story. Forstchen's George Washington series continues--a novel about faith, leadership, and the triumph of the American cause It is , and Washington and his army have spent three years in a bitter stalemate, engaging in near constant skirmishing against the British. The enemy position in New York City is too strong, all approaches blocked by the Royal Navy. At last, two crucial reports reach Washington. The second is that British General Cornwallis, driven to distraction by protracted warfare in the Carolinas, has withdrawn into Yorktown. Washington decides to embark on one of the most audacious moves in American military history. He will force-march nearly his entire army south more than three hundred miles, in complete secrecy, counting on a blockade of the Chesapeake Bay by the French navy, fall upon Cornwallis, and capture his entire force. It is a campaign ladened with "ifs" but the stalemate must be broken, otherwise America, after six long years of war, will crumble. Sgt. Peter Wellsley must pave the way for the army, neutralizing any loyalists who might provide warning. On the other side, Allen Van Dorn receives reports from civilians that something is afoot and is tasked to find out what. As Wellsley moves to block any leaks, Van Dorn tries to penetrate the screen. When one of the former friends is captured, both must decide where their true loyalties lie during the heat of the Battle of Yorktown, as Washington's professional army, once a "rabble in arms," executes the war's most decisive contest.

Only at the beginning of his spiritual development as a healer, Ben isn't sure how to help these women. After all, they are all white, and Ben is a Lakhota Sioux. After much thought and spiritual preparation, Ben comes up with a plan to help the women take back the power that the serial rapist stole from them. The action they take, however, does not work as Ben had expected it to. Some of the women seem better, some worse, but none of them is completely healed. Is it because they are white and Ben was using Lakhota ways? Though the women have suffered the same violation at the hands of the same perpetrator, the women have not reacted as Ben thought they would. And the serial rapist, despite Ben's carefully planned strategy, is still at large, protected by his family's tremendous wealth and political power. Is the difference in cultures the problem? Are Ben's and the women's cultural and spiritual beliefs at such odds with each other that no healing can occur? Is the conflict between the cultures too great for Ben and the victims to cross the chasm and reach what they all seek: justice and healing. In powerful writing and vivid descriptions that allow us a glimpse into the world of Lakhota beliefs and spirituality, Newton Love has given us a twist on the detective novel. Ben Pace is not Sherlock Holmes. Ben is a detective who is Lakhota, human, imperfect, but, according to Lakhota ways, honorable. Getting Started: A Memoir of the s

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Weintraub, Stanley / Weintraub, William, PUBLISHER: McClelland & Stewart, "With letters from Mordecai Richler, Mavis Gallant, and Brian Moore" "Getting Started" is a wonderful memoir, a collection of extraordinary letters, and a brilliant recreation of a time when Canadian writers were set to make their mark in the world for the first time. Writer Brian Moore emigrated from Ireland to Canada in the late s and found work at the Montreal Gazette, where he also found William Weintraub embarking upon a career as a freelance journalist. When he travelled to Paris, Weintraub saw an old friend and former Gazette writer, Mavis Gallant, who filled him in on the tribulations of the expatriate writer's life (""My room is enormous and the radiator very small indeed""). Gallant introduced Weintraub to another Montreal writer, Mordecai Richler, also pursuing a career as a novelist while living a gloriously Bohemian life. Weintraub joined Richler for a while in Ibiza (he later introduced him to Brian Moore), and later they kept in touch. (""Dear Bill: I got your highly unintellectual letter yesterday and it confirmed my suspicions that you slipped a chair under your arse in the Deux Magots as soon as you arrived in Paris and probably haven't moved since."") In these years, Gallant had her short stories published for the first time in the New Yorker, Moore methodically churned out money-making thrillers while working on "The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne," and Richler wrote his first acclaimed book, "The Acrobats." Weintraub, meanwhile, returned to Montreal, where he saw published his brilliant comic novel, "Why Rock the Boat?" William Weintraub weaves together his own memories of the s with letters both to and from his literary colleagues. The letters and his recollections are always fascinating, often hilarious, and provide intimate insight into the lives and work of some of Canada's finest contemporary writers.

Apalachee

Apalachee

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hudson, Joyce Rockwood, PUBLISHER: University of Georgia Press, Known mainly for her YA novels (To Spoil the Sun), Hudson turns to adult fiction in this sweeping novel of Native American life during the early colonial period. The focus is on the eponymous Apalachee people, the Native tribe that dominated northeastern Florida before the coming of Europeans. By the early 18th century, in which the story is set, the Apalachee have been greatly reduced by disease and other dislocations brought by the Spanish invaders. Besides sicknesses against which the Indians had no natural defenses, the Europeans also brought another influence, Christianity. The new religion has had devastating effects upon the tribe, undermining traditional culture and dividing family members against each other. Lucia, a member of the Hinachuba clan, has, like her mother and grandmother, resisted conversion to Christianity. Despite the fact that the old religious centers lie in ruins, they try to keep the old ways alive. A medicine man's vision tells Lucia she is to be the White Sun Woman, the priestess of the tribe. Meanwhile, more pressing concerns intervene. Armed by the English, a neighboring Creek tribe stages raids on the Apalachee mission settlements. War between Spain and England looms, promising doom for the Apalachee caught in the middle. Lucia, now married to Carlos, a Christian convert groomed by Spanish priests to be the chief of the Apalachee, is captured and sold into slavery. Carlos's struggle to recover his wife, who is toiling at a turpentine plantation in the colony of Carolina, seems hopeless. Spanning the years from to , this melancholy book chronicles multiple conflicts between Spanish and English, the details of plantation existence and the ultimatedestruction of the Apalachee way of life. An historical note and extensive bibliography demonstrate the author's attempt at verisimilitude. Despite employing a somewhat romantic and elegiac tone, Hudson presents the Apalachee as real human characters and evokes their culture vividly.

Kiddie Lit: The Cultural Construction of Children's

Kiddie Lit: The Cultural Construction of Children's

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Clark, Beverly Lyon, PUBLISHER: Johns Hopkins University Press, The popularity of the Harry Potter books among adults and the critical acclaim these young adult fantasies have received may seem like a novel literary phenomenon. In the nineteenth century, however, readers considered both Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn as works of literature equally for children and adults; only later was the former relegated to the category of "boys' books" while the latter, even as it was canonized, came frequently to be regarded as unsuitable for young readers. Adults -- women and men -- wept over Little Women. And America's most prestigious literary journals regularly reviewed books written for both children and their parents. This egalitarian approach to children's literature changed with the emergence of literary studies as a scholarly discipline at the turn of the twentieth century. Academics considered children's books an inferior literature and beneath serious consideration. In Kiddie Lit, Beverly Lyon Clark explores the marginalization of children's literature in America -- and its recent possible reintegration -- both within the academy and by the mainstream critical establishment. Tracing the reception of works by Mark Twain, Louisa May Alcott, Lewis Carroll, Frances Hodgson Burnett, L. Frank Baum, Walt Disney, and J. K. Rowling, Clark reveals fundamental shifts in the assessment of the literary worth of books beloved by both children and adults, whether written for boys or girls. While uncovering the institutional underpinnings of this transition, Clark also attributes it to changing American attitudes toward childhood itself, a cultural resistance to the intrinsic value of childhood expressed through sentimentality, condescension, andmoralizing. Clark's engaging and enlightening study of the critical disregard for children's books since the end of the nineteenth century -- which draws on recent scholarship in gender, cultural, and literary studies -- offers provocative new insights into the history of both children's literature and American literature in general, and forcefully argues that the books our children read and love demand greater respect.

Only One Thing Missing centers on the grieving Alicia, a young woman who has recently lost her husband and only child in a tragic accident. Mourning the loss of her family, Alicia is fortunate to be surrounded by friends and neighbors whose hands are always outstretched to offer solace and comfort. But soon she becomes plagued by a succession of nightmares -- all set in a surreal, unidentifiable city -- and when the statues and shadowy figures from the dream city begin to appear in her waking life, she finds herself teetering between sanity and paranoia. Together with her brother-in-law, Esteban -- who happens to be madly in love with her -- Alicia gradually comes to understand that she may be the subject of an evil conspiracy that has dark, ancient roots. As the two of them fall deeper into this phantasmagoric world, they come to see that the people all around them may not be as well-meaning as they appear, and that trust -- once such an abundant commodity -- may have become an unaffordable luxury. Although the three editors are all from the same discipline of psychology, this does not detract from the utility of this book by those of us in other professional areas. The issues of time constraints, deadlines to be met, legalities of contracts, ethics of confidentiality and means of presenting clear and useful information to clients are common to us all whether we be psychologists, rehabilitation counselors, social workers, sociologists, or anthropologists. Additionally, for those of us who are not psychologists, much of the information revealed specific to that discipline will alert us where to go within our own disciplines for assistance to answers or even may alert us to work still waiting to be done. Each of the articles is written in a clear and logical fashion and easily understood by those with a rudimentary background in evaluation and consulting. Hence, this book would serve as an excellent text in courses on evaluation research or organizational consultation. The professional currently involved in applied research or consultation or one considering adding this new dimension to one's occupational life is certain to garner helpful information. Having been one to wear many hats for quite a few years now, this reviewer found the editors' recognition of this situation commendable. More importantly though is the practical albeit humorous way in which they, and the authors of the articles, share with the readers their insight and expertise as they relate experiences they have encountered in juggling thesemany demands. This volume comes to you with the expectation that after reading it, you will have the means at hand to be more effective and less stressed in all your professional roles."

These two, along with ""The Metamorphosis,"" form a suite of stories Kafka referred to as "The Sons," and they collectively present a devastating portrait of the modern family. Also included are ""In the Penal Colony,"" a story of a torture machine and its operators and victims, and ""A Hunger Artist,"" about the absurdity of an artist trying to communicate with a misunderstanding public. Kafka's lucid, succinct writing chronicles the labyrinthine complexities, the futility-laden horror, and the stifling oppressiveness that permeate his vision of modern life. A Man Without Breath: A Bernie Gunther Novel

A Man Without Breath: A Bernie Gunther Novel

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kerr, Philip, PUBLISHER: Quercus Publishing Plc, From the national bestselling author of "Prague Fatale," a powerful new thriller that returns Bernie Gunther, our sardonic Berlin cop, to the Eastern Front. Berlin, March, . A month has passed since the stunning defeat at Stalingrad. Though Hitler insists Germany is winning the war, commanders on the ground know better. Morale is low, discipline at risk. Now word has reached Berlin of a Red massacre of Polish officers in the Katyn Forest near Smolensk. If true, the message it would send to the troops is clear: Fight on or risk certain death. For once, both the Wehrmacht and Propaganda Minister Goebbels want the same thing: irrefutable evidence of this Russian atrocity. To the Wehrmacht, such proof will soften the reality of its own war crimes in the eyes of the victors. For Goebbels, such proof could turn the tide of war by destroying the Alliance, cutting Russia off from its western supply lines. Both parties agree that the ensuing investigation must be overseen by a professional trained in sifting evidence and interrogating witnesses. Anything that smells of incompetence or tampering will defeat their purposes. And so Bernie Gunther is dispatched to Smolensk, where truth is as much a victim of war as those poor dead Polish officers. Smolensk, March, . Army Group Center is an enclave of Prussian aristocrats who have owned the Wehrmacht almost as long as they've owned their baronial estates, an officer class whose families have been intermarrying for generations. The wisecracking, rough-edged Gunther is not a good fit. He is, after all, a Berlin bull. But he has a far bigger concern than sharp elbows and supercilious stares, for somewhere in this mix is a cunning and savage killer who has left a trail of bloody victims. This is no psycho case. This is a man with motive enough to kill and skills enough to leave no trace of himself. Bad luck that in this war zone, such skills are two-a-penny. Somehow Bernie must put a face to this killer before he puts an end to Bernie.

Tetrabiblos

Tetrabiblos

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ptolemy, Claudius / Ashmand, J. M. / Proclus, PUBLISHER: Astrology Classics, Claudius Ptolemy (c.100 - c.178 AD), of Alexandria, was one of the greatest philosopher/scientists of the ancient world. Among his books are the Almagest, Geography, Optics, Planispherium and Tetrabiblos. The earliest surviving version of Tetrabiblos is the paraphrase attributed to Proclus the Philosopher (). Tetrabiblos (literally, "four books") was long thought to be a complete survey of Greek astrology. Recent research suggests this not to be the case, but Ptolemy's work remains the foundation of western astrology. In particular, his persuasive use of the Tropical Zodiac, rather than the Sidereal, changed western astrology forever. Book 1 of Tetrabiblos defines various technical terms and supplies other information needed by the astrologer. Chapters 9, 10 and 11 detail the influence of fixed stars in various constellations. Book 2 is the astrology of nations and their rulers. Books 3 & 4 are devoted to Natal Astrology. Book 3, chapter 2, explains Ptolemy's method of rectifying the Ascendant. Chapter 10 gives a method for determining life expectancy. Book 4 deals with wealth, rank, employment, marriage, children, death, etc. Published editions of Tetrabiblos traditionally include extracts from the Almagest (a compendium of Greek astronomy), as well as "Ptolemy's Centiloquy," a list of aphorisms, the authorship of which is disputed. Many of the 100 deal with horary astrology. They have been studied by astrologers for centuries. Translations: Gardner () lists four English translations of Tetrabiblos. The first was by John Walley, . The second was Walley's translation, edited by Sibley and Brown, , which is said to be worthless. The third, by James Wilson (author ofthe famous Dictionary of Astrology), was published in . The fourth (this one, by far the best), was by J.M. Ashmand, . A fifth translation was made in by F.E. Robbins. Of these several translators, only Ashmand could claim to be both a Greek and Latin scholar as well as an experienced astrologer. We are honored to present Ashmand's translation to a new generation of students. Ashmand's dedication is to Sir Walter Scott (), author of Waverly, an historical novel about the Scots rebellion of . To Ptolemy's text, Ashmand adds his own preface, as well as a note on Mr. Ranger's Zodiacal Planisphere. Every serious astrologer, from the 3rd century to the present, has studied the Tetrabiblos. With the current revival of traditional astrology, it remains essential reading.

Whoopi Goldberg: Her Journey from Poverty to Megastardom

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Parrish, James Robert / Parish, James Robert, PUBLISHER: Birch Lane Press, Karen Johnson, born in , was raised by her mother in the racially mixed Chelsea district of New York City. By ninth grade she had quit school and spent most of her time in Central Park searching for drugs. While Karen Johnson's experiences may seem like many urban horror stories, hers took a dramatic turn the day she decided to move west and change her name to Whoopi Goldberg. Relocating to San Diego with Alexandrea, her daughter from her first marriage to her drug counselor, was not easy. She lived on welfare and scrambled for whatever jobs she could get, including work as a bricklayer and a makeup artist for a mortician. While in San Diego, Whoopi joined an improvisational troupe where she honed her comedic talents. She began doing standup comedy, eventually moving to San Francisco, where her one-woman program was discovered by director/producer Mike Nichols. Nichols brought her show to Broadway, and she won a Grammy for it. But her big break came when Steven Spielberg cast Whoopi in the demanding role of Celle in the film version of Alice Walker's novel The Color Purple, a performance that won a Golden Globe award and an Oscar nomination. She went on to win an Academy Award for her role in Ghost. Whoopi Goldberg had finally made it big. Whoopi Goldberg: Her Journey From Poverty to Mega-Stardom goes behind the scenes to examine: - How her secret romance with married actor Ted Danson climaxed in the "notorious" Friars club roast - Whoopi's confrontation with her absentee father, who died of AIDS in - Her three failed marriages and her once troubled relationship with her daughter - Her legendary feud with Disney studio management over the making of Sister Act -Why her precedent-setting hosting of the Academy Awards ceremonies in and set the film industry on edge - Her verbal confrontations with prominent African Americans, including Jesse Jackson and Spike Lee This insightful biography traces the life and career of this multitalented artist, exploring what makes her tick, how her irreverent and irrepressible persona gets her into trouble, why she is such a workaholic, and how this unconventional lady has earned the unexpected reputation as a femme fatale.

Odd Apocalypse: An Odd Thomas Novel

Odd Apocalypse: An Odd Thomas Novel

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Koontz, Dean R., PUBLISHER: Bantam, "The stallion reared over me, silently slashing the air with the hooves of its forelegs, a creature of such immense power that I stumbled backward even though I knew that it was as immaterial as a dream...." " " The woman astride the ghostly mount reaches out desperately, the latest spirit to enlist the aid of Odd Thomas, the unassuming young fry cook whose gift--or curse--it is to see the shades of the restless dead, and to help them when he can. This mission of mercy will lead Odd through realms of darkness he has never before encountered, as he probes the long-held secrets of a sinister estate and those who inhabit it. ODD APOCALYPSE Once presided over by a flamboyant Hollywood mogul during the Roaring '20s, the magnificent West Coast property known as Roseland is now home to a reclusive billionaire financier and his faithful servants. And, at least for the moment, it's also a port in the storm for Odd Thomas and his traveling companion, the inscrutably charming Annamaria, the Lady of the Bell. In the wake of Odd's most recent clash with lethal adversaries, the opulent manor's comforts should be welcome. But there's far more to Roseland than meets even the extraordinary eye of Odd, who soon suspects it may be more hell than haven. A harrowing taste of Roseland's terrors convinces Odd that it's time to hit the road again. Still, the prescient Annamaria insists that they've been led there for a reason, and he's promised to do his best for the ghost on horseback. Just how deep and dreadful are the mysteries Roseland and her masters have kept for nearly a century? And what consequences await whoever is brave, or mad, enough to confront the most profound breed of evil? Odd only knows. Like his acclaimed creator, the irresistible Odd Thomas is in top-notch form--as he takes on what may well be the most terrifying challenge yet in his curious career. "This is Koontz working at his pinnacle, providing terrific entertainment that deals seriously with some of the deepest themes of human existence: the nature of evil, the grip of fate and the power of love."--"Publishers Weekly "(starred review), on "Odd Thomas" " " "Supernatural thrills with a side of laughs.""--The Denver Post, " on "Brother Odd" " " "The nice young fry cook with the occult powers is Koontz's most likable creation... candid, upright, amusing and sometimes withering.""--The New York Times"

The Winters in Bloom

The Winters in Bloom

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Tucker, Lisa, PUBLISHER: Atria Books, Kyra and David have been married for almost a decade and consider themselves happy - their home is comfortable, their jobs are stable, and their five year-old son, Michael, is simply perfect. Yet for reasons they've never fully shared with each other, the Winters have always been afraid that something will happen to the life they've created, and more importantly, to their little boy. David is a historian - he knows the past is inescapable, and yet he has spent fifteen years trying to escape the tragedy that ended his first marriage; trying to convince himself that if only he works hard enough, his new family will be safe. Kyra writes questions for a math textbook company; she loves puzzles and worships logic, yet she lives in fear of karma punishing her for the way she betrayed her sister, Amy, in college. After all, Amy was more than a sister - she was Kyra's only real family since their mother abandoned them as young children - and their estrangement weighs heavily on her conscience. So when Michael mysteriously disappears from his backyard one ordinary summer day, Kyra and David feel like the mistakes of their past have finally caught up to them. Each is convinced they know who has their son, but to find him, the Winters must embark upon an odyssey through time and memory. Their journey will involve David's mother, Sandra, who offers both her son and her daughter-in-law a path to understanding, and David's ex-wife Courtney, who lives just across town but in a universe away, where she struggles with the demons that caused her to lose everything she loved that fateful night fifteen years ago. It's only when a mysterious stranger enters their lives that they will discover it's not too late to become the kind of family they've always wanted to be--if only they can find a way to forgive themselves, and believe in the gift of a second chance. Lisa Tucker's most optimistic work since "Once Upon a Day, The Winters in Bloom "is a wise, life-affirming tale that is both poignant and surprisingly funny. Though the fast-paced, captivating story will keep readers turning pages, the novel's true power lies in its profound engagement with what it means to be alive: the mistakes we make, the price we pay, the fragility of human happiness but also the stubborn strength of the human heart.
