Realizza inoltre drammi radiofonici, e solo nel debutta nel mondo della fantascienza con "Black Destroyer", apparso sul numero di luglio di Astounding Science-Fiction, racconto che ebbe un tale immediato e notevole successo da convincere l'autore a proseguire in tale genere. La pubblicazione di questo racconto viene considerata l'inzio della Età d'oro della fantascienza, della quale Van Vogt fu uno degli autori più rappresentativi. Nel Black Destroyer, insieme ad altri 3 racconti ("War of Nerves" (), "Discord in Scarlet" () ed "M 33 in Andromeda" (), andrà a formare il famoso romanzo "The Voyage of the Space Beagle", noto in Italia con il titolo Crociera nell'infinito, una delle serie più acclamate della fantascienza dell'età d'oro che, con la sua crociera verso l'ignoto, avente per oggetto l'esplorazione di pianeti e galassie lontanissime, è ispirato alla famosa relazione Viaggio di un naturalista intorno al mondo che il naturalista Charles Darwin pubblicò al ritorno del suo viaggio intorno al mondo a bordo della nave Beagle. Su Astounding van Vogt continua a pubblicare per anni. Anche Slan, il suo romanzo più celebre, esce sulla stessa rivista nel , scritto di notte mentre lavora allo United States Department of Defense. Slan rappresenta un notevole arricchimento per la fantascienza di quegli anni, ed introduce un elemento, quello dei superuomini, che costituirà un importante filo conduttore per molte altre opere di Van Vogt. Dal decide di dedicarsi alla fantascienza a tempo pieno. Si dimette dallo U.S. Department of Defense ed inizia così, con "The Seesaw", uno dei suoi cicli di maggior successo, quello dei fabbricanti di armi (The Weapon Shops of Isher, ). Nel legge, apprezzandola, Science and Sanity: an Introduction to Non-Aristotelian Systems and General Semantics dell'ingegnere polacco Alfred Korzybski. L'idea di una logica Non-aristotelica lo porta ad iniziare il ciclo del "Non-A" (), considerato unanimemente come il suo capolavoro. Nel legge su Astounding l'articolo Dianetics: the Modern Science of Mental Health di L. Ron Hubbard (altro importante scrittore di fantascienza di quegli anni). Van Vogt viene così a conoscenza di un metodo che promette di migliorare le facoltà mentali. Affascinato dall'idea comincia a prendere contatti con Hubbard, e negli anni successivi, a lavorare intensamente per la sua organizzazione. Il notevole interesse per le teorie di Korzybski ed Hubbard lo porta ad allontanarsi dalla fantascienza ed a impiegare ingenti risorse (fisiche ed economiche) in tali dottrine. In questi anni meno produttivi dal punto di vista letterario escono per lo più adattamenti di suoi racconti scritti in precedenza, tra i quali bisogna almeno ricordare I ribelli dei 50 soli (The Mixed Men, ), L'impero dell'atomo (Empire of the Atom, ), ispirato alle vicende e alla caduta dell'Impero Romano, The Beast () e soprattutto La guerra contro i Rull (The War Against the Rull, ), da molti considerato come il miglior romanzo d'avventura spaziale di Van Vogt, ma anche il meno unitario. Van Vogt riprende a scrivere solo nel , soprattutto dietro l'interessamento e gli inviti di Frederik Pohl (allora direttore di Galaxy), non riuscendo però più a raggiungere il medesimo livello qualitativo degli anni precedenti. Le storie di questo secondo periodo nascono, quasi tutte, direttamente come romanzi omogenei; dimostrano pertanto una maggiore coesione nello stile e nella trattazione tematica rispetto a quelle precedenti, ma allo stesso tempo risultano meno adeguate a tenere il passo con l'evoluzione della fantascienza, che è ormai molto diversa da quella degli anni quaranta. L'autore sembra ormai faticare a ritrovare la creatività e il guizzo geniale dei suoi romanzi giovanili e le sue ultime opere vengono accolte con commenti non molto positivi da parte della critica e dei lettori. Di questo periodo degno di nota è dunque soltanto The Silkie ().
