From Brazil to Heaven

From Brazil to Heaven

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Adomian, Diane / Neto, Eduardo C., PUBLISHER: Hands of Care Photography, Up till now, no book has shown so much of the insider's Brazil. In photography and text, "From Brazil to Heaven" gives a unique look into Brazilian lifestyles, cultures and history. This is an essential volume in anyone's cultural library, and a must-have for those whose curiosity and passions are aroused by the Brazilian land and people.ABOUT THE AUTHORBorn in the cauldron of mystery known as Brazil, Eduardo C. Neto is a researcher, photographer and writer presenting an informed insider's view of his country and his people in this first volume of his photography. Edu's work is a raw and immediate glimpse deep into a culture little known and barely understood by the outside world. It takes an insider's knowledge and access, and readiness in the midst of the crowds and the action, to catch these impromptu moments whenever and wherever they happen. ARTS OF BRAZILFrom visual arts to music, dance, poetry and literature, from historical architecture to naive painting, from the ethnic melding of culinary arts to the uniquely communal, acrobatic, and musical martial art that is Brazilian Capoeira, this book reveals the artistic kaleidoscope of living the Brazilian way. We get a view of the largest historical complex of European Baroque architecture in Latin America, along with Art Nouveau, Contemporary, and New Gothic styles. Walls alive with master works by contemporary painters, ancestral food that ties people together, dance as a spontaneous outpouring of cultural expression, and music as part of daily life and community celebrations are found in this cavalcade of images.PHOTOGRAPHYThe photographs capture the stunning beauty of the people, the scenery, the sights and the moments that make up this special corner of the world. By following the threads of culture to their deepest sources, with an insider's point of view, the author's photographs testify to how the people live and why. By his presence on the ground, his access and his authenticity, we come close to the people and culture of Brazil. This book is a visual source of inspiration. Through the children, the women and the men who are the true riches and the beauty of this land, the reader will come to know with intimacy how the Brazilian spirit wakes up each day and survives in the only way it knows, creating a new song.DOCUMENTARYNative Brazilian or "Indio" peoples, Europeans and Africans of the diaspora come together here, overcoming the distances of land and language to take on a new culture. Together, these groups share their strength to forge the Brazilian identity today. This volume provides comprehensive visual documentation of little-known aspects of the Brazilian way of life, along with credible and hard-to-find written information.Myriad cultural manifestations interweave to create the special Brazilian lifestyle. The photographs and accompanying commentary in "From Brazil to Heaven" provide insight into the events that make Brazil exciting year-round: the

The Favored Circle: The Social Foundations of Architectural

The Favored Circle: The Social Foundations of Architectural

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Stevens, Garry, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), The popular view of architecture focuses on individual creative geniuses, those who have designed the most "significant" works. According to Garry Stevens, however, successful architects owe their success not so much to genius as to social background and a host of other factors that have very little to do with native talent. To concentrate only on the profession of architecture is to ignore the much larger field of architecture, which structures the entire social universe of the architect and of which architects are only one part. This book critically surveys that field, exposing many myths and debunking a number of heroes in the process. Using the conceptual apparatus of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, Stevens describes the field of architecture on two levels. First, he provides a detailed account of the field as it is at any given point in time, describing the different components and their relationships. Second, he analyzes the dynamics of the field through time, from the Renaissance to the present. He discusses the system of architectural education, as well as everyday aspects such as the competition for reputation. He concludes that throughout history, the most eminent architects have been connected to each other by master-pupil and collegiate relations. These networks, which still exist, provide a mechanism for architectural influence that runs parallel to that of the university-based schools.

Heroes: Mortals and Myths in Ancient Greece

Heroes: Mortals and Myths in Ancient Greece

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Albersmeier, Sabine, PUBLISHER: Walters Art Gallery, This handsome volume explores the integral role of heroes in ancient Greek art and culture. More than a hundred stunning statues, reliefs, vases, bronzes, coins, and gems drawn from major American and European collections highlight how heroes were represented, why they were important, and what encouraged individuals to seek them out. To contemporary eyes, Greek heroes embody contradiction: they might have superhuman powers, but their mortality was what made them heroic. Many were regarded as benevolent ancestors with powers to protect and heal, but others were dangerous and haunted spirits of the dead, who had to be appeased. Although epic, drama, and the visual arts abound in representations of heroes whose fame has carried over into modern times, cult and funerary architecture commemorate many more individuals whose names and deeds are entirely lost to us. Featuring essays by leading authorities in the field, this book draws on recent archaeological, literary, and art historical research to explore such issues as gender, cult, and iconography, as well as overlooked aspects of familiar (Herakles, Achilles, and Odysseus) and unfamiliar heroes (Helen of Troy).

Exemplarity and Mediocrity: The Art of the Average from

Exemplarity and Mediocrity: The Art of the Average from

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fleming, Paul, Jr., PUBLISHER: Stanford University Press, Following Hegel's analysis of art's increasing difficulty to both engage and extricate itself from prosaic reality, Paul Fleming investigates the strategies employed by German literature from to for increasingly attuning itself to quotidian life--common heroes, everyday life, non-extraordinary events--while also avoiding all notions of mediocrity. He focuses on three sites of this tension: the average audience (Lessing), the average artist (Goethe and Schiller), and the everyday, or average life (Grillparzer and Stifter). The book's title, "Exemplarity and Mediocrity," describes both a disjunctive and a conjunctive relation. Read disjunctively, modern art must display the "exemplary originality" (Kant) that only genius can provide and is thus fundamentally opposed to mediocrity as that which does not stand out or lacks distinctiveness; in the conjunctive sense, modern art turns to non-exceptional life in order to transform it--without forsaking its commonness--thereby producing exemplary forms of mediocrity that both represent the non-exceptional and, insofar as they stand outside the group they represent, are something other than mediocre.

Six Stories from the End of Representation: Images in

Six Stories from the End of Representation: Images in

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Elkins, James, PUBLISHER: Stanford University Press, James Elkins has shaped the discussion about how we--as artists, as art historians, or as outsiders--view art. He has not only revolutionized our thinking about the purpose of teaching art, but has also blazed trails in creating a means of communication between scientists, artists, and humanities scholars. In "Six Stories from the End of Representation," Elkins weaves stories about recent images from painting, photography, physics, astrophysics, and microscopy. These images, regardless of origin, all fail as representations: they are blurry, dark, pixellated, or otherwise unclear. In these opaque images, Elkins finds an opportunity to create stories that speak simultaneously to artists and to scientists, and to open both those fields to those of us who have little purchase in either. Regarding each image through the lens of the discipline that produced it, Elkins simultaneously affirms the unique structure of each way of viewing the world and brings those views together into a vibrant conversation.
