Romance, Poetry, and Surgical Sleep: Literature Influences

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Papper, E. M., PUBLISHER: Greenwood Press, Pain and suffering, once associated with punishment for sin, became regarded as a purposeless evil that was hostile to human welfare. The works of Thomas Beddoes, Coleridge, and Shelley embody the change in attitude toward suffering and lay the groundwork for the general use of anesthesia in modern medicine. Papper contends that there was no real societal readiness to treat or prevent pain until the idea of the worth of the common man or woman was established by the upheaval of the French Revolution. The humanitarian concepts that we take for granted were relatively recent developments in Western society and were associated with the recognition of the importance of the individual.

Canada's Rights Revolution: Social Movements and Social

With Superfoods for Life, eating healthfully--and staying young--never tasted so good. The New York Times Book Review on Superfoods: "Increasingly, nutritional science is affirming much, if not all, of the thinking that once seemed to reside only on the fringe, in particular ideas about the power of some nutrients to help the body resist cancer and heart disease. Ms. Riccio takes many of the foods, particularly fruits, vegetables, grains, and fish, known to have especially healthful properties and methodically provides recipes for them...the recipes manage to seem more appetizing, less like medicine, than those in many a book with its eye on today's health fervor".

The Myth of Human Races

The Myth of Human Races

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Corcos, Alain F., PUBLISHER: Michigan State University Press, The idea that human races exist is a socially constructed myth that has no grounding in science. Regardless of skin, hair, or eye color, stature or physiognomy, we are all of one species. Nonetheless, scientists, social scientists, and pseudo-scientists have, for three centuries, tried vainly to prove that distinctive and separate "races" of humanity exist. These protagonists of race theory have based their flawed research on one or more of five specious assumptions: humanity can be classified into groups using identifiable physical characteristics human characteristics are transmitted "through the blood," distinct human physical characteristics are inherited together, physical features can be linked to human behavior, human groups or "races" are by their very nature unequal and, therefore, they can be ranked in order of intellectual, moral, and cultural superiority. The Myth of Human Races systematically dispels these fallacies and unravels the web of flawed research that has been woven to demonstrate the superiority of one group of people over another.

Beyond Lament: Poets of the World Bearing Witness to the

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Striar, Marguerite M., PUBLISHER: Northwestern University Press, Challenging Theodor Adorno's famous statement that "writing poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric", Beyond Lament is a rich and varied anthology consisting of new and previously published poems about the atrocity of the Holocaust. While writing poetry about the Holocaust may be considered by some to be a futile attempt to express the inexpressible, for many the need to give voice to the anger and despair of the Holocaust is as essential as the need to come to grips with its unspeakable horror. Editor Marguerite M. Striar has arranged the nearly 300 poems in this volume to tell the story beginning with the early premonitions of Nazi evil in , through the course of the unthinkable violence that ended in with Hitler's demise, to the flourishing of concern for human rights in the aftermath of the Holocaust. These works -- by well-known poets such as Paul Celan, Nelly Sachs, Czeslaw Milosz, Dannie Abse, and Robert Pinsky, as well as by many lesser-known or unknown poets -- show how poetry makes history memorable, confirm the resilience of the human spirit, and prove that even in the face of great suffering, the flame of creation will not be extinguished.

The Principles of Scientific Management

The Principles of Scientific Management

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Taylor, Frederick Winslow, PUBLISHER: Nuvision Publications, This paper has been written: First. To point out, through a series of simple illustrations, the great loss which the whole country is suffering through inefficiency in almost all of our daily acts. Second. To try to convince the reader that the remedy for this inefficiency lies in systematic management, rather than in searching for some unusual or extraordinary man. Third. To prove that the best management is a true science, resting upon clearly defined laws, rules, and principles, as a foundation. And further to show that the fundamental principles of scientific management are applicable to all kinds of human activities, from our simplest individual acts to the work of our great corporations, which call for the most elaborate cooperation. And, briefly, through a series of illustrations, to convince the reader that whenever these principles are correctly applied, results must follow which are truly astounding.

Exploring Brain Functional Anatomy with Positron Tomography

Exploring Brain Functional Anatomy with Positron Tomography

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ciba Foundation / Caba Foundation / Porter, R., PUBLISHER: John Wiley & Sons, Exploring Brain Functional Anatomy with Positron Tomography Chairman: R. Porter Positron emission tomography (PET) is an essentially non-invasive technique for measuring localized functional activity in the brain and elsewhere in the body in a quantitative manner with good topographical resolution. PET is an area of burgeoning research activity in which advances in camera design and in data acquisition and analysis have allowed repeated, rapid measurements of cerebral blood flow to be made down to a resolution of 6 mm or better. This symposium is, to our knowledge, the first to be published on the application of PET to the mapping of human cerebral cortical function. It includes chapters on aspects of the technology of PET and on its use clinically and in basic research into brain function. Other chapters describe the use of the technique to study the human somatosensory system and motor system, the human visual system (with the first direct evidence for separate colour and motion centres and pathways in the visual cortex), and higher-order processes such as attention, memory, intention, learning and language in humans. Chapters on the use of PET to study frontal lobe function in relation to psychiatric disease, and brain injury and recovery from it, illustrate the application of this imaging method to the clinical field. The fully edited discussions between neurologists, physiologists, neuroanatomists, psychiatrists, physicists, statisticians and other experts serve to highlight problems in the current protocols and to identify future directions in the exploitation of positron tomography both in basic neuroscience research and in medicine. Aquinas's Summa Theologiae: Critical Essays

Aquinas's Summa Theologiae: Critical Essays

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Davies, Brian, PUBLISHER: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Thomas Aquinas () was first and foremost a Christian theologian. Yet he was also one of the greatest philosophers of the Middle Ages. Drawing on classical authors, and incorporating ideas from Jewish and Arab sources, he came to offer a rounded and lasting account of the origin of the universe and of the things to be found within it, especially human beings. Aquinas wrote many works, but his greatest achievement is undoubtedly the Summa Theologiae. This presents his most mature thinking and is the best introduction to his philosophical (and theological) ideas. Few secondary books on Aquinas focus solely on the Summa, but the present volume does just that. Including work by some of the best Aquinas scholars of the last half decade, it provides a solid introduction to one of the landmarks of western thinking.
