Natural Experiments: Ecosystem-Based Management and the

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Layzer, Judith A., PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), Scholars, scientists, and policymakers have hailed ecosystem-based management (EBM) as a remedy for the perceived shortcomings of the centralized, top-down, expert-driven environmental regulatory framework established in the United States in the late s and early s. EBM entails collaborative, landscape-scale planning and flexible, adaptive implementation. But although scholars have analyzed aspects of EBM for more than a decade, until now there has been no systematic empirical study of the overall approach. In "Natural Experiments, " Judith Layzer provides a detailed assessment of whether EBM delivers in practice the environmental benefits it promises in theory. She does this by examining four nationally known EBM initiatives (the Balcones Canyonlands Conservation Program in Austin, Texas, the San Diego Multiple Species Program, the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, and the California Bay-Delta Program) and three comparison cases that used more conventional regulatory approaches (Arizona's Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan and efforts to restore Florida's Kissimmee River and California's Mono Basin). Layzer concludes that projects that set goals based on stakeholder collaboration, rather than through conventional politics, are less likely to result in environmental improvement, largely because the pursuit of consensus drives planners to avoid controversy and minimize short-term costs. Layzer's resolutely practical focus cuts through the ideological and theoretical arguments for and against EBM to identify strategies that hold genuine promise for restoring the ecological resilience of our landscapes.

V., PUBLISHER: CRC Press, There is a growing awareness of a worldwide reduction in biodiversity and the urgent need to develop ways to redress the problem. This is the first major book devoted to the subject of genetic resource banking (GRB) and its role in preserving global animal biodiversity. In Cryobanking the Genetic Resource, expert contributors provide the non-specialist with an overview of the subject and the practical techniques associated with GRB. The book presents a basic introduction to the concepts, and then points the way to relevant literature for those who wish to develop practical applications. The first section deals with the potential contribution of GRB to biodiversity protection, while the second section offers an introduction to the basic cryobiology of gametes and embryos. In the first section, genetic considerations for planning interventions are discussed, together with disease control measures. This section explores related reproductive technologies necessary for the use of cryopreserved gametes and embryos, as well as a range of other issues such as ownership and security of stored material, and the size and location of cryopreserved material. The second section offers a thorough review of the literature on cryopreservation of spermatozoa, oocytes, and embryos. It gathers species into related groups for ease of reference, and does not assume extensive specialist knowledge so that newcomers to the field can make the best use of the available research. From Molecules to Minds: Challenges for the 21st Century:

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Institute Of Medicine, PUBLISHER: National Academies Press, Neuroscience has made phenomenal advances over the past 50 years and the pace of discovery continues to accelerate. On June , the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders hosted more than 70 of the leading neuroscientists in the world, for a workshop titled "From Molecules to Minds: Challenges for the 21st Century." The objective of the workshop was to explore a set of common goals or "Grand Challenges" posed by participants that could inspire and rally both the scientific community and the public to consider the possibilities for neuroscience in the 21st century. The progress of the past in combination with new tools and techniques, such as neuroimaging and molecular biology, has positioned neuroscience on the cusp of even greater transformational progress in our understanding of the brain and how its inner workings result in mental activity. This workshop summary highlights the important issues and challenges facing the field of neuroscience as presented to those in attendance at the workshop, as well as the subsequent discussion that resulted. As a result, three overarching Grand Challenges emerged: How does the brain work and produce mental activity? How does physical activity in the brain give rise to thought, emotion, and behavior? How does the interplay of biology and experience shape our brains and make us who we are today? How do we keep our brains healthy? How do we protect, restore, or enhance the functioning of our brains as we age?

Protein Conformation - No. 161

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ciba Foundation / Caba Foundation, PUBLISHER: John Wiley & Sons, Protein Conformation Chairman: F.M. Richards One of the major unsolved problems in biology and chemistry is how the amino acid sequence of a protein determines its three-dimensional structure, yet this structure is fundamental to the functioning and mechanism of action of enzymes, channels and receptors. Since the pioneering modelling work of Pauling in the s and the X-ray structure determinations by Kendrew and Perutz in the s, much structural information on proteins has been amassed. Several hundred protein structures have now been solved by X-ray crystallography and, more recently, NMR spectroscopy has had a significant impact on the study of structures of small proteins in solution. In this book, contributions from experts in the fields of X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, molecular modelling and protein engineering provide insight into current views on the protein folding problem and point to avenues for future progress. The use of molecular dynamics simulations to provide information about protein structure, dynamics and stability, and about protein-- protein interactions, is discussed. Other topics focused on include enzyme catalysis, site-directed mutagenesis as a tool in studies of protein conformation and stability, and recent developments in multidimensional NMR methodology. Neurobiology of Incontinence - No. 151

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ciba Foundation / Caba Foundation, PUBLISHER: John Wiley & Sons, Neurobiology of Incontinence Chairman: C. D. Marsden Incontinence is the loss of voluntary control over the bladder or bowel and is a very common and often devastating problem which goes largely unacknowledged. This major clinical condition requires increased attention from basic research workers if the underlying mechanisms are to be elucidated. The symposium was therefore designed to bring together neuroscientists working on the basic biology of the bladder and bowel and clinicians dealing with the various clinical manifestations of urinary and faecal incontinence. The resulting volume is unusual in its wide coverage, it includes chapters on the innervation and functional anatomy of the urinary tract and anorectal region and on the central neural control of these two areas. Other papers discuss the functional assessment of the anorectum and bladder, stress urinary incontinence and the neurogenic hypothesis of incontinence, detrusor - external sphincter dyssynergia, and pharmacological and surgical approaches to the treatment of urinary and faecal incontinence. Treatment by means of surgically implanted prostheses is also considered. The aim of the symposium is to stimulate scientists to enter a challenging research area in order to undertake the further basic investigations into mechanisms which would lead to advances in the understanding, treatment and-- above all-- prevention of a distressing and prevalent condition. Neurophysiologists, neurologists, neuroanatomists, neuropharmacologists, urologists, gynaecologists, colorectal surgeons, nurses, and biomedical engineers concerned with prosthesis design, will all find this book of interest to them.
