Emerson in His Journals:,

Emerson in His Journals:,

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Porte, Joel / Emerson, Ralph Waldo, PUBLISHER: Belknap Press, This long-awaited volume offers the general reader the heart of Emerson's journals, that extraordinary series of diaries and notebooks in which he poured out his thoughts for more than fifty years, beginning with the "luckless ragamuffin ideas" of his college days. Emerson as revealed in his journals is more spontaneous, more complex, more human and appealing than he appears in the published works. This man is the seeker rather than the sage; he records the turmoil, struggle, and questioning that preceded the serene and confident affirmations of the essays. He is honest, earthy, tough-minded, self-critical ("I am a lover of indolence, & of the belly"), warm in his enthusiasms, a witty and sharp observer of people and events. Everything is grist for his mill: personal experiences, his omnivorous reading, ruminations on matters large and small, his doubts and perplexities, public issues and local gossip. There are abrupt shifts in subject and tone, reflecting the variousness of his moods and the restless energy of his mind. Drawing from Harvard's sixteen-volume scholarly edition of the journals--but omitting the textual apparatus that makes it hard to read--Joel Porte presents a sympathetic selection that brings us close to Emerson the man. Writing about Patients: Responsibilities, Risks, and

Writing about Patients: Responsibilities, Risks, and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kantrowitz, Judy Leopold, PUBLISHER: Other Press (NY), An important new study of the clinical conundrum surrounding the publication of patient material. The publication, presentation, and discussion of case studies are essential to the dialogue of psychoanalysis. However, presenting patient material to the public by either disguising the patient's identity or asking for the patient's consent presents a clinical dilemma. In a series of interviews, Judy Leopold Kantrowitz asks 141 analysts not only to describe their thoughts about disguising a patient versus asking a patient's consent to appear in a paper, but also their perceptions of the clinical ramifications of a patient reading the material, whether by accident or design. In first-hand accounts, both analysts-as-patients and patients who are not themselves analysts relate the experience of reading about themselves, and reflect on the impact that reading had on their view of their analysts, themselves, and the analytic work. Ethical concerns about confidentiality and decision making are examined both in theory and in the context of their clinical effect. Throughout the book, Kantrowitz examines the conscious and unconscious motives for analysts in writing about a patient, ultimately demonstrating that the conflict between the need to preserve patient privacy and the need for a literature including clinical material is not easily resolved.

Nature and History in American Political Development: A

Nature and History in American Political Development: A

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ceaser, James W. / Rakove, Jack / Rosenblum, Nancy L., PUBLISHER: Harvard University Press, In this inaugural volume of the Alexis de Tocqueville Lectures, political scientist James Ceaser traces the way certain ideas, including nature, history, and religion--which he calls foundational ideas--have been understood and used by statesmen and public intellectuals over the course of American history, from the Puritans to the current day. Ceaser treats these ideas not as pure concepts of philosophy or theology, but rather as elements of political discourse that provide the ground or ultimate appeal for other political ideas, such as liberty or equality. At times, they have critically influenced the course of American political development, offering various opportunities and constraints for political leaders. Ceaser traces the histories of these ideas and their relation to other ideas, to practices, and to the fortunes of successive partisan regimes. Three critical commentators--historian Jack Rakove and political theorists Nancy Rosenblum and Rogers Smith--challenge Ceaser's arguments in several ways. They suggest that other ideas may be considered foundational, and they prod him to clarify further how foundational ideas work politically. Ceaser responds with vigor, and the result is a spirited debate about large and enduring questions in American politics.

Diminishing Welfare: A Cross-National Study of Social

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Goldberg, Gertrude Schaffner / Rosenthal, Marguerite G. / Goldberg, Gertrude S., PUBLISHER: Praeger, Particularly in the s, social welfare programs have been cut back in a number of countries. Indeed, the phrases "ending welfare as we know it" or "dismantling the welfare state" have been used to describe this trend. In this analysis by well-recognized social welfare scholars, the nature and extent of changes in social welfare programs in key industrial or post-industrial countries is scrutinized. Determining if and how social welfare and employment rospects have been cut back in the United States, Canada, Sweden, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Hungary, and Japan helps to identify the population groups hardest hit by cutback. In the United States, for example, poor, single-mother families have suffered major reductions in income support, while more powerful groups have avoided major losses. This cross-national study not only sheds light on general trends in social welfare but also provides clues to what constitutes successful reform and what has failed. This major comparative analysis will be of interest to scholars, students, policy makers, and professionals as well as the general public concerned with social welfare issues, full employment, poverty, and economic inequality.

Lawyer: A Life of Cases, Counsel, and Controversy

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Liman, Arthur L., PUBLISHER: PublicAffairs, During nearly half a century of practicing law, Arthur L. Liman represented the very best ideals of his profession. He was renowned both for his brilliance as a corporate lawyer and for his commitment to public service and pro bono work. Vanity Fair called him a "big trouble" lawyer -- i.e., the lawyer you call when you're in it. Advisor to four governors and two mayors, Liman worked to reform the criminal justice system and to defend the rights of the poor. In this candid memoir, written in the months before his death, Liman discusses his life in the law from the moment Roy Cohn's performance at the McCarthy hearings inspired him to become a lawyer to his influential investigation of the Attica prison uprising, through his role as chief counsel in the Iran/Contra hearings, with looks at many fascinating cases, clients, and controversies along the way. Full of lively portraits of the moguls, financiers, politicians and criminals with whom Liman worked, and grounded in his insightful, provocative opinions on the practice of law and on today's legal issues, Lawyer is an absorbing read and a wonderful gift for lawyers, law students, and anyone interested in how corporate and American politics are played at the top.

Thereafter, Robeson writes, "liberty meant the privileges to which the elite minority was entitled." And as for freedom, we are still waiting for it. In the tradition of James Baldwin's Notes of a Native Son, Robeson's A Black Way of Seeing melds history and analysis in a sweeping panorama, scathing in its understanding of why black empowerment has failed and prescient in its articulation of what it will take for black Americans to finally cross over to the status of fully empowered citizens and what the ramifications of this change can be for the country as a whole. Paul Robeson Jr. is the author of Paul Robeson, Jr. Speaks to America: The Politics of Multiculturalism and The Undiscovered Paul Robeson: An Artist's Journey. Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon --

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Weller, Sheila, PUBLISHER: Washington Square Press, A groundbreaking and irresistible biography of three of America's most important musical artists -- Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon -- charts their lives as women at a magical moment in time. Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon remain among the most enduring and important women in popular music. Each woman is distinct. Carole King is the product of outer-borough, middle-class New York City; Joni Mitchell is a granddaughter of Canadian farmers; and Carly Simon is a child of the Manhattan intellectual upper crust. They collectively represent, in their lives and their songs, a great swath of American girls who came of age in the late s. Their stories trace the arc of the now mythic sixties generation -- female version -- but in a bracingly specific and deeply recalled way, far from cliche. The history of the women of that generation has never been written -- until now, through their resonant lives and emblematic songs. Filled with the voices of many dozens of these women's intimates, who are speaking in these pages for the first time, this alternating biography reads like a novel -- except it's all true, and the heroines are famous and beloved. Sheila Weller captures the character of each woman and gives a balanced portrayal enriched by a wealth of new information. "Girls Like Us" is an epic treatment of midcentury women who dared to break tradition and become what none had been before them -- confessors in song, rock superstars, and adventurers of heart and soul.

No More Tears...: Struggles for Land in Mpumalanga, South

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Levin, Richard / Weiner, Daniel, PUBLISHER: Africa World Press, Three years after South Africa's first nonracial democratic elections, the difficult process of social and economic transformation continues. About one-half of South Africa's 41 million people -- and two-thirds of the African population -- still live in deep poverty. Eight million live in shacks. Land hunger is widespread. Land dispossession caused by colonialism's and apartheid's forced removals and alienation of land and water rights lie at the heart of the repressive regime which the national liberation movement struggled against. In South Africa, land and agrarian reform policy is presently being developed as a top-down exercise increasingly informed by a neo-liberal macroeconomic policy orientation. In the book, this elite driven transition is contrasted with a proposed popular program of radical transformation. The specific role of the World Bank is criticized, and the results of a uniquely participatory research and policy development project recently undertaken in the Eastern Transvaal are presented. The book demonstrates why incorporating extensive knowledge that exists in poor rural areas into development of land and reform policies is essential for truly democratic social and economic transformation. This is an important book that will be useful for policy-makers, academics and the general public alike.

National Security Mom: Why "Going Soft" Will Make America

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bennett, Gina M., PUBLISHER: Wyatt-MacKenzie Publishing, "National Security Mom" offers the basics of current terrorism trends and national security policymaking from a parent's perspective. Written by a mother of five and 20-year veteran of counterterrorism in the US Intelligence Community, this book de-mystifies the underworld of terrorism and offers a unique comparison of how the super-secret intelligence approach to securing our nation is surprisingly similar to how parents secure their homes and families. By comparing the expertise parents gain while running their households to the skills required to govern, "National Security Mom" empowers America's parents to engage with confidence in the public national security debate. The simple premise, that everything we need to know about securing our nation we have learned from our family life, offers hope that no matter what security challenges America faces, our nation will be proud and secure. We need only follow the guidance we give our children, such as "clean up your own mess," "tell the truth," and "don't give in to a bully," to ensure our nation's welfare. Moms know that the most important lessons they teach their children will last a lifetime. Who better to entrust the security of our nation than mothers?

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Scocca, Tom, PUBLISHER: Riverhead Books, A definitive, and highly entertaining, account of contemporary Beijing, the undisputed capital of the twenty-first century. Within the past decade, Beijing has debuted as the defining city of the now and foreseeable future, and China as the ascendant global power. Beijing is the ultimate representation of China's political and cultural capital, of its might-and threat. For so long, the city was closed off to the world, literally built around the Forbidden City, the icon of all that was ominous about China. But now, the country is eager to show off its new openness, its glory and magnanimity, and Beijing is its star. When Tom Scocca arrived in -an American eager to see another culture-Beijing was looking toward welcoming the world to its Olympics four years later, and preparations were in full swing to create a renewed city. Scocca talked to the scientists tasked with changing the weather; interviewed designers and architects churning out projects; checked out the campaign to stop public spitting; documented the planting of trees, the rerouting of traffic, the demolition of the old city, and the construction of the new metropolis. "Beijing Welcomes You" is a glimpse into the future and an encounter with an urban place we do not yet fully comprehend, and the superpower it is essential we get to know better.

Billy the Kid: A Short and Violent Life

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Utley, Robert M., PUBLISHER: University of Nebraska Press, Whatever his name or alias at the moment--Henry McCarty, Henry Antrim, Kid Antrim, Billy Bonney--people always called him the Kid. Not until his final month did anyone call him Billy the Kid. Newspapers pictured him as a king of outlaws; and his highly publicized capture, trial, escape, and end fixed his image in the public mind for all time. He was only twenty-one years old when a bullet from Sheriff Pat Garett's six-shooter killed him on July . Within a year Billy the Kid became the subject of five dime-novel "biographies" as well as Garett's ghost-written account, and that was just the beginning. Robert M. Utley does what countless books, movies, television shows, musical compositions, and paintings have failed to do: he successfully strips off the veneer of legendry to expose the reality of Billy the Kid. Using previously untapped sources, he presents an engrossing story--the most complete and accurate ever--of a youthful hoodlum and sometime killer who found his calling in New Mexico's bloody power struggle known as the Lincoln County War. In unmasking the legend Utley also tells us much about our heritage of frontier vigilantism and violence.

Queer Latinidad: Identity Practices, Discursive Spaces

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rodriguez, Juana Maria / El-Din, Morsi Saad / Mokhtar, Gamal, PUBLISHER: New York University Press, According to the census, Latinos/as have become the largest ethnic minority group in the United States. Images of Latinos and Latinas in mainstream news and in popular culture suggest a Latin Explosion at center stage, yet the topic of queer identity in relation to Latino/a America remains under examined. Juana MarA-a RodrA-guez attempts to rectify this dearth of scholarship in Queer Latinidad: Identity Practices, Discursive Spaces, by documenting the ways in which identities are transformed by encounters with language, the law, culture, and public policy. She identifies three key areas as the project's case studies: activism, primarily HIV prevention; immigration law; and cyberspace. In each, RodrA-guez theorizes the ways queer Latino/a identities are enabled or constrained, melding several theoretical and methodological approaches to argue that these sites are complex and dynamic social fields. As she moves the reader from one disciplinary location to the other, RodrA-guez reveals the seams of her own academic engagement with queer latinidad. This deftly crafted work represents a dynamic and innovative approach to the study of identity formation and representation, making a vital contribution to a new reformulation of gender and sexuality studies.

Euroscepticism in Southern Europe: A Diachronic Perspective

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Susannah, Verney / Verney, Susannah, PUBLISHER: Routledge, The referenda in France and the Netherlands underlined the growing legitimacy problems of the European Union, by signaling serious public dissatisfaction with the current direction of European integration. In the aftermath of the constitutional debacle, an examination of the origins, evolution and prospects of opposition to the European integration project appears particularly timely. As a laboratory for the study of attitudes towards European integration, Southern Europe offers a particularly rich range of case studies, including a founder member (Italy), three 'second generation' states (Greece, Spain and Portugal), two recent entrants (Cyprus and Malta) and a negotiating candidate (Turkey). In addition, all seven states have been closely linked to the integration project since the era of the European Community, with four members of this group being the first states to sign Association Agreements with the European Community in the s and s. Southern Europe also covers the spectrum in terms of size, including large, medium and small states. The volume traces the evolution of euroscepticism in each South European country, assessing its significance and highlighting both continuity and change. Covering both eliteparty and popular euroscepticism, the volume illuminates the factors which have shaped opposition to integration and the form and content which it has assumed in each country. This book was published as a special issue of South European Society & Politics.

Keep True: A Life in Politics

Keep True: A Life in Politics

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Pawley, Howard / Moist, Paul, PUBLISHER: University of Manitoba Press, Howard Pawley served as Premier of Manitoba during one of the most turbulent periods in the province's history. Not since the days of Louis Riel has the province faced such intense and divisive issues as constitutional reform and French-language rights as it did during the s, when Manitoba took centre stage in setting social policies that would affect Canada's national identity. Howard Pawley's political principles were first tested in the fight to bring public auto insurance to Manitoba. In Keep True, he describes this early political battle, and the many that would follow -- human rights and marriage law reform; the explosive French-language debate that left the province caught between the federal government and Quebec separatists; the CF-18 fighter jet controversy; and the doomed negotiations of the Meech Lake Accord. He tells us what went right and what went wrong, offering unique insight into current national debates. From his first winning campaign while confined to a hospital bed to the sudden fall of his government at the hands of a rogue political insider, Pawley's memoirs are an engaging and refreshingly honest look at a political career that had a profound effect on a province and its people.

The Awakening

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Chopin, Kate / Robinson, Marilyn, PUBLISHER: Bantam Classics, First published in , this beautiful, brief novel so disturbed critics and the public that it was banished for decades afterward. Now widely read and admired, "The Awakening" has been hailed as an early vision of woman's emancipation. This sensuous book tells of a woman's abandonment of her family, her seduction, and her awakening to desires and passions that threated to consumer her. Originally entitled "A Solitary Soul," this portrait of twenty-eight-year-old Edna Pontellier is a landmark in American fiction, rooted firmly in the romantic tradition of Herman Melville and Emily Dickinson. Here, a woman in search of self-discovery turns away from convention and society, and toward the primal, from convention and society, and toward the primal, irresistibly attracted to nature and the senses"The Awakening," Kate Chopin's last novel, has been praised by Edmund Wilson as "beautifully written." And Willa Cather described its style as "exquisite," "sensitive," and "iridescent." This edition of "The Awakening" also includes a selection of short stories by Kate Chopin. "This seems to me a higher order of feminism than repeating the story of woman as victim... Kate Chopin gives her female protagonist the central role, normally reserved for Man, in a meditation on identity and culture, consciousness and art." -- From the introduction by Marilynne Robinson.

Courting Disaster: The Supreme Court and the Unmaking of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Garbus, Martin, PUBLISHER: Times Books, A provocative look at the naked political agenda of today's Supreme Court, from one of America's foremost jurists. In the fall of , when the United States Supreme Court handed down a decision that effectively decided a Presidential election, the Court's role in political life suddenly was thrust onto center stage. But, as legendary attorney and activist Martin Garbus argues, the Court has been a hotbed of politics for years, and it's time we took off our blinders and stopped treating the justices as the protectors of objective truth. For more than a generation, the Supreme Court has been quietly but aggressively rolling back legislation that has been fundamental to our justice system and economy since the days of Franklin Roosevelt. Although they remain on the books, laws concerning everything from abortion to the rights of suspects have been all but eviscerated. Most of the legal principles involved are subtle and technical, and often are lost on the general public. But in Courting Disaster Garbus brilliantly explicates the ways in which seemingly small decisions by the Court can preciptate radical change in American law, and then in American society. Ultimately, Garbus issues a passionate, well-argued wake-up call to liberal forces, urging the restoration of the Court's bipartisanship and objectivity.

Paths to Homelessness: Extreme Poverty and the Urban Housing

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Timmer, Doug A. / Talley, Kathryn D. / Eitzen, D. Stanley, PUBLISHER: Westview Press, This book is the first to combine a cogent explanation of the economic and historical causes of homelessness with accounts of individuals and families on the streets, in soup lines, and in shelters. The human side of the story, told from ethnographies conducted in three diverse cities--Chicago, Denver, and Tampa--shows that there is no "culture of poverty" that makes people poor, just as there is no "culture of homelessness" that leaves people without shelter. Instead, the authors show that large numbers of people became homeless through the processes of urban and industrial decline.Homelessness is largely an urban phenomenon. It increased dramatically when cities witnessed the simultaneous loss of low-income housing and good-paying industrial jobs. However, the increase in the number of homeless people does not suggest a special social problem--arising from the character of individuals--but is the result of social and economic transformations in American cities since the late s.In this book the words of the homeless tell the stories of people who were "making it" before but eventually fell into circumstances of extreme poverty. The many paths taken to homelessness, revealed in their stories, speak to the changing conditions of inequality in the United States today and the need for new public policies.

Ghosts of the Confederacy: Defeat, the Lost Cause, and the

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Foster, Gaines M., PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, After Lee and Grant met at Appomatox Court House in to sign the document ending the long and bloody Civil War, the South at last had to face defeat as the dream of a Confederate nation melted into the Lost Cause. Through an examination of memoirs, personal papers, and postwar Confederate rituals such as memorial day observances, monument unveilings, and veterans' reunions, Ghosts of the Confederacy probes into how white southerners adjusted to and interpreted their defeat and explores the cultural implications of a central event in American history. Foster argues that, contrary to southern folklore, southerners actually accepted their loss, rapidly embraced both reunion and a New South, and helped to foster sectional reconciliation and an emerging social order. He traces southerners' fascination with the Lost Cause--showing that it was rooted as much in social tensions resulting from rapid change as it was in the legacy of defeat--and demonstrates that the public celebration of the war helped to make the South a deferential and conservative society. Although the ghosts of the Confederacy still haunted the New South, Foster concludes that they did little to shape behavior in it--white southerners, in celebrating the war, ultimately trivialized its memory, reduced its cultural power, and failed to derive any special wisdom from defeat.
