In the name of cultural defense, the legislatures in San Juan and Quebec City have passed several laws focusing on protecting the vernacular. Barreto explores these two cases and challenges some general preconceived notions about nationalist movements. A common premise in ethnic conflict studies is that nationalism is caused by cultural traits, such as language or religion, or is a result of a region's subservient economic role vis-a-vis the country's core. However, Barreto contends that Puerto Rican and Quebecois elites turned to nationalism in reaction to their social marginalization and economic suppression. Anglophone elites in the U.S. and Canada established a hegemonic order making English a requirement for social and economic ascendancy. Shunned by the country's dominant group on account of their language, elites in Puerto Rico and Quebec took up the banner of nationalism attempting to establish a "counter-hegemonic" order. Thus, nationalism, Barreto contends, is an unanticipated reaction to the exclusionary attitudes and policies of one group against another. This analysis is important to political scientists, social scientists, and researchers involved with nationalism, ethnic conflict, and Puerto Rican and Canadian studies.

His critical essays on these and on the historian Thucydides represent an important development from the somewhat mechanical techniques of rhetorical handbooks to a more sensitive criticism of individual authors. Illustrating his analysis with well-chosen examples, Dionysius preserves a number of important fragments of Lysias and Isaeus. The essays on those two orators and on Isocrates, Demosthenes and Thucydides comprise Volume I of this edition. Volume II contains three letters to his students; a short essay on the orator Dinarchus; and his finest work, the essay "On Literary Composition, " which combines rhetoric, grammar and criticism in a manner unique in ancient literature. For sale is my rare sophisticated Zenith Respirator Luxe AF/P (high frequency/ precison) Day Date Tank watch with box and warrently. The watch is all original and in perfect condintion with the vintage Zenith crown logo. This watch is timeless and sophisticated and very nice as a dress and sport watch due to the size of the square/ rectangular case around 37 x 37 cm. Please notice the geometry of the metallic dial that reflects light on four directions. Very nice! About this name, Respirator, it comes from the French "respirateur" and is based on the way this case is built. There is a large gasket between the glass and the case that "breathes", meaning that as much water pressure increases the case is compressed, increasing the water resistance. It's a 70's design. There are Respirators, marked with a "X" on the dial, that do not "breathes", meaning that they are Respirators only by the name. This great watch comes with the famous and rare movement Zenith (Movado) 405 AF/P with BPH of jewels and a power reserve of 40hrs. A very fast ticking! The Final Line Department will create Backgrounds containing the Final Line Art before progressing into the Background Color department. Excellent knowledge of and experience in Photoshop is required.
