ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cooper, Edward S., PUBLISHER: Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, This is the biography of a man willingly corrupted by the demands of Washington society and of two wives who demanded social prominence. By virtue of his excellent Civil War record, Belknap became President Grant's Secretary of War. The excesses of the Gilded Age were in full flower. Railroad barons, gold speculators, arms dealers, land speculators, and purveyors of goods for the army flocked to Washington seeking contracts and favors. Cabinet members vied with each other to provide the most lavish entertainments on their meager salaries. Some Cabinet officers were rich, Belknap was poor. Graft was rampant and Belknap found ways to have his share. Soon money was flowing into his coffers and his wives could dress in Parisian gowns, live in mansions, give receptions for people at a time, and each wife, in succession, would be named "queen" of Washington society by the newspapers. But a day of reckoning did come with his impeachment and resignation in disgrace. This is not just the story of one more grafter from the Gilded Age of the Grant administration. The effects of the Belknap scandal are still felt today.

Pascal's runaway brother was back saying they were free The slaves had been freed by President Lincoln And besides, Gideon said, they could have forty acres of land and maybe a mule just for the asking. Gideon said land meant freedom. That night Pascal, twelve, and his friend Nelly, eight, ran away with Gideon. They were going to get a farm. They had to hide lest they be taken back into slavery. Also, land didn't seem as easy to find as Gideon had thought. What did it mean if you had to run and hide, if you were crippled and couldn't do what others did? Joined by other former slaves, Pascal, Gideon, and Nelly did find a farm. They even found a school that Pascal and Nelly could attend. They learned about dignity and the Freedmen's Bureau and the Union League and the Republicans. But they also discovered it was not easy for former slaves to stay free and to keep their land. Based on the author's research about events in the South in , this is the story of what might have happened to one small group of African Americans.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Blankart, Charles Beat / Mueller, Dennis C., PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), The leaders of European Union member states have declared that a European constitution should take "a clear, open, effective, democratically controlled Community approach." Their goal--that within the Union, "European institutions should be brought closer to its citizens"--raises many questions about implementation. What is the most effective procedure for connecting citizens' preferences to political action and policy choices at the EU level? The contributors to this CESifo volume, internationally prominent economists and other scholars, address the major issues that arise in the writing of a constitution. They do so with the underlying assumption that individuals are rational actors and the goal of the state is to advance their collective interests. The ten chapters consider such topics as how a constitution might be designed to prevent military conflict, whether the EU will evolve "by default" into a federal state, the apparent contradiction between the evolutionary development of the EU and the static structure of the constitution, the definition of citizenship and rights, the division and distribution of power, the budgetary deadlock on the provision of public goods and the redistribution of resources, coordinating policy, alternative methods for choosing an EU president, and the role of such direct democracy institutions as referenda and initiatives. The editors conclude by summing up the main arguments advanced to offer a unified approach to these issues.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Follett, Richard / Foner, Eric / Johnson, Walter, PUBLISHER: Johns Hopkins University Press, President Abraham Lincoln freed millions of slaves in the South in , rescuing them, as history tells us, from a brutal and inhuman existence with the promise of freedom and equal rights. This is a moment to celebrate and honor, to be sure, but what of the darker, more troubling side of this story? "Slavery's Ghost" explores the dire, debilitating, sometimes crushing effects of slavery on race relations in American history. In three conceptually wide-ranging and provocative essays, the authors assess the meaning of freedom for enslaved and free Americans in the decades before and after the Civil War. "Slavery's Ghost" asks important and challenging questions: How did slaves and freedpeople respond to the promise and reality of emancipation? How committed were white southerners to the principle of racial subjugation? And in what ways can we best interpret the actions of enslaved and free Americans during slavery and Reconstruction? Collectively, these essays offer fresh approaches to questions of local political power, the determinants of individual choices, and the discourse that shaped and defined the history of black freedom. Written by three prominent historians of the period, "Slavery's Ghost" forces readers to think critically about the way we study the past, the depth of racial prejudice, and how African Americans won and lost their freedom in nineteenth-century America. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Dionne, E. J., Jr., PUBLISHER: Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, America today is at a political impasse; we face a nation divided and discontented. Acclaimed political commentator E.J. Dionne argues that Americans can't agree on who we are as a nation because we can't agree on who we've been, or what it is, philosophically and spiritually, that makes us "Americans." Dionne places our current quarrels in the long-standing tradition of struggle between two core values: the love of individualism and our reverence for community. Both make us who we are, and to ignore either one is to distort our national character. He sees the current Tea Party as a representation of hyper-individualism, and takes on their agenda-serving distortions of history, from the Revolution to the Civil War and the constitutional role of government. Tea Partiers have reacted fiercely to President Obama, who seeks to restore a communitarian balance - a cause in American liberalism which Dionne traces through recent decades. The ability of the American system to self-correct may be one of its greatest assets, but we have been caught in cycles of over-correcting. Dionne seeks, through an understanding of our factious past, to rediscover the idea of true progress, and the confidence that it can be achieved.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Beatty, John / Woodworth, Steven E., PUBLISHER: Bison Books, When Southerners fired on Fort Sumter in April , John Beatty left his bank job in Ohio to answer President Lincoln's call for soldiers. Within a short while he was commanding the Third Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, as green to combat as his men. The diary he kept from June to January shows how well they did their fearful job without losing their humanity. In October the Ohio regiment lost nearly forty percent of its five hundred men on the field at Perryville. After heavy fighting at Stone's River the following year, Beatty was promoted to brigadier general. In these pages the cost of union is carefully weighed by an intelligent and modest man who never glorifies war. Advancing through the South with the Army of the Cumberland, he lives to tell about the horrific battles at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. Whether describing large events in Kentucky, Tennessee, and elsewhere or the quiet times of camp life, Beatty never loses personal perspective Steven E. Woodworth, in his introduction, writes about the life of this extraordinary "ordinary man," whose diary, originally published in , "stands out as one of the dozen or so best memoirs of the Civil War for its clarity, honesty, humor, and plain good sense."

Madison" to "Roe v. Wade" and beyond, the court has decided matters of slavery, freedom of speech, criminal rights, privacy rights and civil rights. Battles over confirmation, and struggles between the President and the court have been at the center of some of the most dramatic constitutional crises in American history. As the only affordable one-volume study of the court available, this book feels a real void. It covers, in plain English, the whole panorama of the court's nearly 200 years of decision and debate, and includes biographies of every justice; a complete and concise history of the court; the 100 most important decisions, as well as the ten worst decisions; a detailed analysis of how one case makes its way through the court; a study of the people, the clerks, the support staff and the politics of the court's day-to-day operations, a complete glossary of legal terms, and a detailed bibliography. "The Supreme Court: A Citizen's Guide" is an indispensable book for American history scholars, legal buffs and everyone seeking a better understanding of the people, politics, and traditions of this vital institution.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Isserman, Maurice, PUBLISHER: PublicAffairs, As Isserman notes, along with Silent Spring and The Feminine Mystique, Michael Harrington's The Other America stood out in the early s as a beacon illuminating a vital, neglected part of America's political landscape. Ironically, although his vocation was as a movement-builder, his book alone sparked no movement; it did swiftly result in policy -- President Johnson's War on Poverty -- though without the focus or level of funding found in European welfare states that Harrington, a former Catholic Worker turned socialist, argued was necessary. Decades later, several European socialist leaders reputedly believed that had he been European, he would have been a prime minister. But since he wasn't, his life was lived in surroundings too small for his gifts. Sectarian politics swallowed much of his energy in the s, leaving organizational commitments and battle scars that crippled his potential to play a leading role in shaping the political movements of the s. Remarkably, Harrington bounced back to achieve great success in the s, with the Democratic Agenda movement, which crafted significant progressive planks in the Democratic Party platform. Isserman (If I Had a Hammer), a noted historian of the American Left, does an excellent job of drawing the reader in with Harrington's family background and early life, but there's too little exploration of his writing and of the conservative forces arrayed against him in the '70s and '80s for readers to fully appreciate the sweep and sophistication of his intellectual vision or his capacity to adapt. Still, this is a valuable and intriguing look at a major figure of the American left of enduring influence.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Schoultz, Lars, PUBLISHER: Harvard University Press, In this sweeping history of United States policy toward Latin America, Lars Schoultz shows that the United States has always perceived Latin America as a fundamentally inferior neighbor, unable to manage its affairs and stubbornly underdeveloped. This perception of inferiority was apparent from the beginning. John Quincy Adams, who first established diplomatic relations with Latin America, believed that Hispanics were "lazy, dirty, nasty...a parcel of hogs." In the early nineteenth century, ex-President John Adams declared that any effort to implant democracy in Latin America was "as absurd as similar plans would be to establish democracies among the birds, beasts, and fishes." Drawing on extraordinarily rich archival sources, Schoultz, one of the country's foremost Latin America scholars, shows how these core beliefs have not changed for two centuries. We have combined self-interest with a "civilizing mission"--a self-abnegating effort by a superior people to help a substandard civilization overcome its defects. William Howard Taft felt the way to accomplish this task was "to knock their heads together until they should maintain peace," while in CIA Director Allen Dulles warned that "the new Cuban officials had to be treated more or less like children." Schoultz shows that the policies pursued reflected these deeply held convictions. While political correctness censors the expression of such sentiments today, the actions of the United States continue to assume the political and cultural inferiority of Latin America. Schoultz demonstrates that not until the United States perceives its southern neighbors as equals can it anticipate a constructive hemispheric alliance.
