Ci sono dei dischi che nascono così, perfetti fin nei dettagli, ed è proprio il caso di questo "The NIghtlfy", una vera perla dove l'ex "Steely Dan" Donald Fagen, illumina la notte. Il retaggio Steely Dan è palese - l'inconfondibile cocktail di jazz, pop, blues, funk e soul, il tocco sofisticato degli arrangiamenti, l'insistito dialogo voce-backup vocals - ma evolve verso una forma-canzone più asciutta, restringendo gli interventi strumentali. Ne scaturisce un jazz-pop vellutato, eppure capace di colpire dritto al cuore. Fagen si conferma maestro nel manipolare la musica "colta" con un'attitudine squisitamente popular, ma sfugge alla trappola del banale riadattamento alla temperie del momento: dei cliché del periodo (siamo in piena epopea 80), infatti, non v'è traccia. Così oggi "The Nightfly" non suona come "un disco degli anni 80", né si può prestare a raffronti con le opere coeve o successive.
