American Pickers Guide to Picking

American Pickers Guide to Picking

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Callaway, Libby / Wolfe, Mike / Fritz, Frank, PUBLISHER: Hyperion Books, A true adventure story and the go-to guide for "picking" American treasures from anyone's backyard, straight from the stars of History's "American Pickers" In these pages, professional treasure hunters Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz chronicle their road trips across the American countryside in search of "rusty gold" to buy and sell among the picking world's one-of-a-kind characters. Whether you are a fan of the show or just like finding hidden riches, you will love seeing what Wolfe and Fritz dig up and enjoy meeting the devoted collectors, extreme stockpilers, and elite dealers who they encounter along the way. Wolfe and Fritz do not deal in fine antiques. Their secondhand treasures are of the down-and-dirty and sometimes even bizarre variety, from old bicycles and vintage tools, to sun-bleached cars and handmade furniture, retired carnival games and unusual taxidermy. Assisted by Danielle Colby, who helps out at Antique Archaeology, Wolfe and Fritz buy on the cheap and then sell to dealers, art directors, interior designers, or anyone looking for a little bit of authentic Americana. The three now share their secrets to finding hidden gems, offering helpful hints that will show what average Americans can do to find the treasures that await them. From "American Pickers Guide to Picking: " " " Junk is Beautiful When we knock on a door, 90 percent of the time the things we find are junk. But we don't care about the odds; a picker never turns down an opportunity, no matter where it is. We've picked pickup trucks. We've picked flat beds. We've picked dumpsters. We even picked a Mercury Sable. We're looking for the unusual, the impossible, the funky, the different, the bizarre--things we have never seen before. And we'll go anywhere we have to go to find it. No location is off-limits to a hard-core picker. And there's plenty of things to be found at antique stores, thrift and consignment shops, flea markets, estate sales, and swap meets, and a lot of the tips in this book apply to finding treasures at these joints. But that's not really the kind of picking we do anymore. We look outside the box to find our junk--a word we use almost like a term of endearment: to us: junk is beautiful.

The Liberal Ideal and the Demons of Empire: Theories of

The Liberal Ideal and the Demons of Empire: Theories of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Semmel, Bernard, PUBLISHER: Johns Hopkins University Press, As Great Britain and other Western nations built empires--both formal and informal--writers on economic and social questions developed theories to explain why and how advanced industrial states exercised control over colonial regions. Different schools of thought emerged: some anticipated the growth of a cosmopolitaneconomic order, others believed in a brutal imperialism necessary for an expanding capitalism, still others saw evil precapitalist forces at work. In The Liberal Ideal and the Demons of Empire, noted historian Bernard Semmel traces the evolution of the ideas about imperialism and discusses four major schools of thought: the classical economists, the social theorists, the national economists, and the Marxists. From Adam Smith to Lenin, the subject of colonialism--and then imperialism--remained controversial. Although classical economists offered visions of a prosperous world economy based on free trade, and liberal idealists argued that rational self-interest would eliminate aggressive mercantilism and wars of conquest, such "utopian" ideals proved elusive. Even defenders of capitalism noted contradictions between the harsh realities of the emerging industrial system and the optimistic economic theories that attempted to describe it. In the end the critics--including liberal sociologists, national economists, and Marxists--would win the day by defining imperialism in terms of historic demons: feudal aristocrats, medieval usurers, and evil empires. These ideas, Semmel concludes, became props of the liberal, socialist, and fascist ideologies of our time. "A generation ago, Richard Koebner traced the changing meanings of the word imperialism from its rather surprisingNapoleonic beginnings. Now, building on a succession of books with which he has enriched the literature, Bernard Semmel addresses the wider question of the evolution in thought to which the evolution of the word was, so to speak, an index. Semmel's book will beunquestionably useful to historians--particularly those outside the confines of European expansion--and will be valuable as supplemental reading in college courses. One wonders if it will have the effect one would most like to see--on politicians, publicists, and praters who continue to use the word imperialism so inappropriately."--Robert K. Webb, University of Maryland, Baltimore County Bernard Semmel is Distinguished Professor of History at the Graduate School of the City University of New York. His studies of imperialism include Imperialism and Social Reform, Jamaican Blood and Victorian Conscience, and The Rise of Free Trade Imperialism. He has also written on Methodism, John Stuart Mill, and naval strategy.

A Line in the Sand

A Line in the Sand

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Roberts, Randy W. / Olson, James S. / Olson, James N., PUBLISHER: Free Press, In late February and early March of , the Mexican Army under the command of General Antonio Lipez de Santa Anna besieged a small force of Anglo and Tejano rebels at a mission known as the Alamo. The defenders of the Alamo were in an impossible situation. They knew very little of the events taking place outside the mission walls. They did not have much of an understanding of Santa Anna or of his government in Mexico City. They sent out contradictory messages, they received contradictory communications, they moved blindly and planned in the dark. And in the dark early morning of March 6, they died. In that brief, confusing, and deadly encounter, one of America's most potent symbols was born. The story of the last stand at the Alamo grew from a Texas rallying cry, to a national slogan, to a phenomenon of popular culture and presidential politics. Yet it has been a hotly contested symbol from the first. Questions remain about what really happened: Did William Travis really draw a line in the sand? Did Davy Crockett die fighting, surrounded by the bodies of two dozen of the enemy? And what of the participants' motives and purposes? Were the Texans justified in their rebellion? Were they sincere patriots making a last stand for freedom and liberty, or were they a ragtag collection of greedy men-on-the-make, washed-up politicians, and backwoods bullies, Americans bent on extending American slavery into a foreign land? The full story of the Alamo -- from the weeks and months that led up to the fateful encounter to the movies and speeches that continue to remember it today -- is a quintessential story of America's past and a fascinating window into our collective memory. In "ALine in the Sand," acclaimed historians Randy Roberts and James Olson use a wealth of archival sources, including the diary of Jose Enrique de la Pena, along with important and little-used Mexican documents, to retell the story of the Alamo for a new generation of Americans. They explain what happened from the perspective of all parties, not just Anglo and Mexican soldiers, but also Tejano allies and bystanders. They delve anew into the mysteries of Crockett's final hours and Travis's famous rhetoric. Finally, they show how preservationists, television and movie producers, historians, and politicians have become the Alamo's major interpreters. Walt Disney, John Wayne, and scores of journalists and cultural critics have used the Alamo to contest the very meaning of America, and thereby helped us all to "remember the Alamo." Acquista Ora

Los Angeles Review No. 12

Los Angeles Review No. 12

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: GALE, KATE, Davio, Kelly, PUBLISHER: Red Hen Press, "The Los Angeles Review" started off with a small group of editors in Los Angeles and work mostly by L.A. writers. We've expanded through the years and now the editors are spread throughout California and the Northwest (plus one in Michigan). What unifies the journal is a focus on the writing of the Left Coast, on the way that the writing of the West works outside the framework of the traditional and the academic, pushes back against writing that fits into small spaces, writing that was written for a small group of elite intellectuals. Many of these stories look forward and backward at the same time, at what was and what could have been, at what will be and what could change. Writing in the West continues to evolve and move forward over the edge. It is the writing of desire. My definition of the writing of the West comes from my play, "The Moon Landing is a Hoax." We write about: Sky, clouds, water, hiking, boats, machines, wide open spaces, grasses, mountains, caves, racks of antlers, mustard seed growing, wild orchids, waterfalls, fat people, hairy people, ugly people, dipshits, trailer trash people, truck drivers, soldiers, gypsies, Mexicans, nuclear bombs, test sites, Las Vegas, military bases, guys that work on cars, half wits from Kansas, women with no teeth and curlers in their hair in case they go out later and all of us eating the dark that is America. Flynn Berry's "Surfing," the story of a man, as told by his brother, growing to adulthood, becoming addicted to drugs, going through one rehab stint after another, ends like this: "Here is what I want, out of the many, many things I want. I want to go to Berkeley to our old house in . I want to hang out with my brother when he is four, when he is bright and goofy. His hair is blond and he is three feet tall.... Below us is the wide shining bay, with no trace of the fog he loves to watch come in... I will tell him to be brave. That he will be fine. If I think about it closely enough, maybe it is true. Maybe it is happening right now, in one of the universes, in one of the dimensions that I can't see. He tilts his head, voice excited, telling me about a supernova. There, smell the eucalyptus. Try to imagine it better. Nothing--is unattainable." And that is what the work in LAR wants to believe. That we can push ourselves to the edge of the world and reinvent story, language, what is possible.

The Way of the Fog (the Ark of Light, Volume One)

The Way of the Fog (the Ark of Light, Volume One)

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fuchs, A. P., PUBLISHER: Coscom Entertainment, At the end of Time there was Armageddon; the Earth was unprepared. The forces of Heaven and Hell warred and, presiding over the battle, was the Ark of Light, the arbiter of Armageddon. Then, what was supposed to have been the end of History suddenly came to a halt when the Ark of Light vanished from its post. The armies of Light and Darkness faded from the Earth and Time went on. Aeons passed and what happened that day long ago faded into legend. It is now the year 134 of the Fifth Aeon. Peter Jones, a poet from the Broken City of Garathen, looks for a life outside the confines of his small city and its concealing forest ring. Late one night, a little girl named Catina comes into the city on a quest of her own: to find her grandfather and take him back to Grek, where a mysterious illness is claiming the lives of the townsfolk and of her parents. Together, Peter, Catina and her grandfather set out cross-country to rescue the little girl's parents before it's too late. Thus the journey begins. While traveling West, they meet up with Aiyesha Elnaa, a fugitive running from the Dembatstayr Army, a lethal force clearing the land in the name of Peace, paving the way for the Master's Second Coming. Together, they continue on their journey and pick up two more travelers along the way: Mr. Nibbetts, a furry Flistablare from the Tanturee Forest, and a dog, Belina. Away from the security of his Garathen home, Peter begins to have doubts about his belief in the Master. As his doubts grow and his heart yearns for peace, he begins seeing a man in a gray cloak, but every time he gets close to him, the man vanishes. As the man's hauntings grow more frequent and the mysterious illness that plaguesCatina's parents begins to take hold of Peter and his friends, they learn of the Ark of Light and the prophecy it will one day reappear. When death seems all but inevitable, a creature from the Purple Fog launches his attack on the group. Who is he? Who sent him and what does he want? As History once again draws to a close and the Ark of Light awakens from its hidden resting place, a new power rises from the Coast of Seryn, the Island of the Dead. Strange events are set in motion and the race for the Ark of Light begins, and the long postponed war looms once again. Author Biography: A.P. Meridian DSP

Meridian DSP

Meridian DSP White High Gloss Onboard Digital Signal Processing for dynamic bass protection with exceptionally accurate transients. DSP always delivers clear, accurate, quality sound even at high levels and for prolonged periods. Meridian SpeakerLink connectivity makes DSP quick and easy to set up and install. Featuring a wide-range driver that allows the DSP crossover frequency to be well outside the speech band, the DSP delivers an effortless sound that remains clear, open and spacious, even at high listening levels. DSP Loudspeakers The traditional setup – amplifiers driving passive loudspeakers – is inefficient, limiting sound quality. Meridian loudspeakers contain a complete, matched audio system with efficient DSP crossovers, multiple DACs and driver-specific amplifiers, giving higher overall quality, less power use, and the performance of a traditional loudspeaker eight times the physical volume. SpeakerLink Traditional audio systems often require large, expensive cables to maintain their performance. Meridian's SpeakerLink uses an “Ethernet style” cable that delivers pristine digital sound and control down a single cable between Meridian components. The result is simple, unobtrusive, and cost-effective cables that are easy to install. Triple FIFO Buffering Each sample of a digital recording must remain evenly spaced in time. Unfortunately, timing can vary, especially when reading discs. This is “jitter”, degrading music's sense of space and diminishing realism. Meridian's multiple “First In, First Out” buffering system minimises jitter, ensuring perfect timing and improved clarity. You enjoy a clearer feeling of the instruments and their interrelationship. Meridian High Resolution (MHR) MHR was the first approved encryption method for transferring high definition digital audio between components. Previously, it had to be in the analogue domain, reducing quality. MHR allows secure movement of high resolution digital audio within a Meridian system, without compromise, improving quality by reducing cyclic repetition. Meridian Apodising Filter Filters are critical in digital audio. Commonly they introduce distortion and harshness because of "pre-ringing". Early digital recordings suffer from harshness too, due to primitive filters. After painstaking research, Meridian developed a special filter that avoids pre-ringing, so it can be steeper, cleaning up the effects of early filters. The result: a better, cleaner sound from recordings old and new. Wide Range Driver Loudspeakers use crossovers to “divide” music into bands their drivers can reproduce. This introduces distortion, reducing sound quality – particularly on human voice recordings. Designing a single driver for both mid and high frequencies made a crossover within the vocal range unnecessary, avoiding distortion and reproducing more lifelike vocals at all volume levels. Performance Frequency response in-room within 3dB from 45Hz to over 20kHz. Output >105dB spl @ 1m on music material. Noise less than 15dB spl. Connections Meridian SpeakerLink in and out (RJ45) Construction 2-way sealed enclosure system. Drivers 1 x 165mm polypropylene bass driver. 1 x 85mm aluminium cone wide-range driver. Amplifiers Two 75W power amplifiers, one for each driver. Overall distortion typically

Obiettivo Samyang 85mm T1.5 AS IF UMC VDSLR x Fotocamere

Samyang 85mm T1.5 AS IF UMC VDSLR LensThe Samyang 85mm T1.5 is a manual focusprime lens, this VDSLR (Video DSLR) version has been developed primarilyfor professional cine / movie making purposes. The VDSLR versionfeature follow focus gearing and decoupled aperture, which allow theuser to smoothly and quietly change focus and aperture / depth of fieldwhist filming, and link to professional follow focus cam systems.TheSamyang 85mm T1.5 is a manual focus prime lens, designed to giveexceptional results at wide apertures. At T1.5 great images can beobtained, which is perfect for portraiture and low light shooting, particularly when mounted on a full frame DSLRs.The SamyangVDSLR Cine lenses are rated in T-Stops rather than F-stops which is thestandard for professional movie camera lenses. F-stop number expressesthe speed of the lens on the assumption that lens transmits 100% of theincident light, and therefore is theoretical rather than a real worldmeasurement. The T-number expresses the actual light transmission, andthus is accurate for exposure purposes. It is also worth noting that theSamyang lenses achieve excellent transmissions properties.Thebokeh (the character of the out-of-focus blur) is a primary concern forprofessionals choosing an ultra large aperture lens for shallowdepth-of-field photography. The Samyang 85mm T1.5 lens design offersexcellent bokeh quality of out-of-focus highlights when used near wideopen, perfect for film and cine applications. Independent tests andusers confirm the Samyang',s beautiful bokeh character, surpassing lenses4 times the price. The lens optical construction is the same asthe 85mm f1.4 lens comprising of 9 lenses divided into 7 optical groupswith one aspheric lens element. The Samyang 85mm is designed withinternal focusing (IF) meaning the lens does not increase in size whenfocusing. A further positive aspect to internal focusing is that thelens is much less likely to get dust inside, as opposed to externalfocusing (or zooming) lenses which can suck in dirt during use. The 8bladed aperture design aids a great bokeh character at near wide openapertures. The Samyang 85mm T1.5 IF MC features Multi-coatedlenses which aid the very high level of light transmission, and addedresistance to flare and ghosting. It features a good sized manual focusring and is perfectly adapted to most photographic applications(exclusive of sports or fast moving subjects) where manual focus is notan issue. Accurate for focus critical situations can be achieved throughuse of focusing in live view mode, available to most newer cameramodels. In practice users including professional photographers havefound manual focus of the Samyang 85mm not to be an issue, even shootingat f1.4 with a very shallow depth of field in low light scenarios withstatic and slow moving subjects accurate focus can be achieved givingexcellent results thought the image on full frame cameras.Thereare also increasing numbers of users using DSLRs for filming and HighDefinition (HD) video and manual focus lenses allows the user to alterfocus during filming, and hence why the VDSLR versions were developed.Thefocus ring features toothed rings compatible with professional gearedfollow focus systems available in the film industry and likewise atoothed, decoupled (de-clicked) aperture ring.
