Exploring Brain Functional Anatomy with Positron Tomography

Exploring Brain Functional Anatomy with Positron Tomography

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ciba Foundation / Caba Foundation / Porter, R., PUBLISHER: John Wiley & Sons, Exploring Brain Functional Anatomy with Positron Tomography Chairman: R. Porter Positron emission tomography (PET) is an essentially non-invasive technique for measuring localized functional activity in the brain and elsewhere in the body in a quantitative manner with good topographical resolution. PET is an area of burgeoning research activity in which advances in camera design and in data acquisition and analysis have allowed repeated, rapid measurements of cerebral blood flow to be made down to a resolution of 6 mm or better. This symposium is, to our knowledge, the first to be published on the application of PET to the mapping of human cerebral cortical function. It includes chapters on aspects of the technology of PET and on its use clinically and in basic research into brain function. Other chapters describe the use of the technique to study the human somatosensory system and motor system, the human visual system (with the first direct evidence for separate colour and motion centres and pathways in the visual cortex), and higher-order processes such as attention, memory, intention, learning and language in humans. Chapters on the use of PET to study frontal lobe function in relation to psychiatric disease, and brain injury and recovery from it, illustrate the application of this imaging method to the clinical field. The fully edited discussions between neurologists, physiologists, neuroanatomists, psychiatrists, physicists, statisticians and other experts serve to highlight problems in the current protocols and to identify future directions in the exploitation of positron tomography both in basic neuroscience research and in medicine. Pathogenesis and Clinical Practice in Gastroenterology

Pathogenesis and Clinical Practice in Gastroenterology

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ferkolj, I. / Galle, P. R. / Gangl, A., PUBLISHER: Springer, The translation of new molecular understanding of disease into clinical practice in gastroenterology is a special challenge. The Falk Symposium No. 160, entitled a Pathogenesis and Clinical Practice in Gastroenterologya (TM), held June in PortoroA3/4, Slovenia, provided a stimulating framework to bridge discussions from bench to bedside. The proceedings of the symposium are contained in this book, and the unifying theme is the growing understanding of inflammation as a driving force in chronic disease leading to disability and malignancy. Aspects of early detection - endoscopically or via molecular markers - are covered as well as in-depth discussions of the validation of new findings in clinical practice. Whilst on a molecular basis gastroenterologists and hepatologists try to shed light on the same intracellular pathways, clinical implications such as surveillance of cancer in IBD or chronic hepatitis with cirrhosis have to be tailored to specific needs. New therapeutic agents - approved or on the horizon of early clinical studies - will dramatically change the options of patients with chronic disease such as Crohna (TM)s disease, viral hepatitis or hepatocellular carcinoma.

Science and Empire: East Coast Fever in Rhodesia and the

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cranefield, Paul F., PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, East Coast fever is a lethal disease of cattle caused by a parasite. It affects and distorts lymph cells and causes them to behave like cells in leukemia and lymphoma. The disease was unknown to Western science or to veterinary practice until it was introduced into Rhodesia in . It devastated the cattle-raising and ox-cart dependent transport systems of Rhodesia and South Africa and was not fully brought under control for some fifty years. It remains a serious problem in East and Central Africa. The book describes the social and economic impact of the outbreak, the scientific investigations into it, and the effort to control it. The scientific study of the disease was done in part by the famous bacteriologist, Robert Koch, whose many early errors retarded later investigations, which were far more sound. Much of the text is accessible to the nonspecialist reader and one chapter deals with the present-day understanding of the basic nature of the disease.

Clinical Handbook of Surgical Critical Care

Clinical Handbook of Surgical Critical Care

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Burchard, Kenneth W. / Wiles, Charles E. / Gann, Donald S., PUBLISHER: Informa Healthcare, The surgical patient may exhibit a variety of subtle and not so subtle clues that a problem, or in the words of the authors a hole, is present. Therefore, when evaluating and managing the critically ill patient, the critical care surgeon must proceed through a series of three questions: Where is the hole? How do I repair the hole? and the most critical question, Why is the hole there? The Clinical Handbook for Surgical Critical Care is a guide to answering these questions, bringing into focus the importance of why is the hole there? and exploring how to effectively make it disappear. Since much of surgical critical illness is secondary to either inadequate circulation, pathological inflammation, or both, the authors pay particular attention to the recognition of these conditions associated with particular disease states. The authors examine the pathophysiology that underlie these disease states and then the physical examination, monitoring, and laboratory results that lead to a diagnosis. They discuss appropriate management of the deranged physiology and provide the supporting evidence for treatment. The Clinical Handbook for Surgical Critical Care serves as a manual for reviewing and contrasting organ physiology during normal and pathological states and recognizing the pathophysiological states related to surgical disease and procedures. It gives you a clear understanding of the link between deficits in the circulation and pathological inflammation that is key to a successful outcome.

Neurobiology of Incontinence - No. 151

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ciba Foundation / Caba Foundation, PUBLISHER: John Wiley & Sons, Neurobiology of Incontinence Chairman: C. D. Marsden Incontinence is the loss of voluntary control over the bladder or bowel and is a very common and often devastating problem which goes largely unacknowledged. This major clinical condition requires increased attention from basic research workers if the underlying mechanisms are to be elucidated. The symposium was therefore designed to bring together neuroscientists working on the basic biology of the bladder and bowel and clinicians dealing with the various clinical manifestations of urinary and faecal incontinence. The resulting volume is unusual in its wide coverage, it includes chapters on the innervation and functional anatomy of the urinary tract and anorectal region and on the central neural control of these two areas. Other papers discuss the functional assessment of the anorectum and bladder, stress urinary incontinence and the neurogenic hypothesis of incontinence, detrusor - external sphincter dyssynergia, and pharmacological and surgical approaches to the treatment of urinary and faecal incontinence. Treatment by means of surgically implanted prostheses is also considered. The aim of the symposium is to stimulate scientists to enter a challenging research area in order to undertake the further basic investigations into mechanisms which would lead to advances in the understanding, treatment and-- above all-- prevention of a distressing and prevalent condition. Neurophysiologists, neurologists, neuroanatomists, neuropharmacologists, urologists, gynaecologists, colorectal surgeons, nurses, and biomedical engineers concerned with prosthesis design, will all find this book of interest to them.
