But on hearing that Jewish families were being led into the woods and shot, Beck sheltered the Kramers and two other Jewish families. Eighteen people in all lived in a bunker dug out of the Becks' basement. Fifteen-year-old Clara kept a diary during the twenty terrifying months she spent in hiding, writing down details of their unpredictable life--from the house's catching fire to Mr. Beck's affair with Clara's neighbor; from the nightly SS drinking sessions in the room above to the small pleasure of a shared Christmas carp. Against all odds, Clara lived to tell her story, and her diary is now part of the permanent col-lection of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

The work of Bernice Abbott and Robert Frank, referred to in the introduction, provides insights into American life but is also characterized by a particular way of seeing. These books have less the effect of art than of photojournalism-though perhaps the best sort, one encouraging contemplation rather than sensationalism. Unfortunately, the problem lies largely in the nature of series, the constraints of size and format and introduction, which here places as much weight on the editors' vision as the individual photographer's ability to see. That said, these are nonetheless valuable documents of today's middle America, by turns pleasant and disturbing, honest, and mythical. Pratt focuses on the county fairs of the Midwest, the traditions they maintain, and, most importantly, the people who attend them. Arndt photographs men, mostly working class, mostly in crumbling cities, establishing a sense of unity among his subjects that makes it the more successful of the books. Fabrizio Plessi, Biografia Nato a Reggio Emilia nel , veneziano d’adozione, Fabrizio Plessi è uno tra i più noti ed apprezzati artisti italiani contemporanei. La sua ricerca, pur esplorando differenti prassi operative e campi d’applicazione – numerose sono le esperienze dell’artista nell’ambito del cinema, del teatro, del design – ha trovato nella video installazione, spesso declinata in dimensioni monumentali, la forma d’espressione che meglio la identifica. Già titolare della cattedra di pittura presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, nonché dal al professore di “Umanizzazione delle tecnologie” e di “Scenografie elettroniche” alla Kunsthochschule für Medien di Colonia, Fabrizio Plessi ha fatto il suo esordio in ambito espositivo nel , proprio nella città lagunare. Da allora, il crescente interesse suscitato dalla sua opera lo ha portato ad esporre sempre più frequentemente oltre i confini nazionali, conducendo le sue installazioni video nei “templi” mondiali dell’arte contemporanea. His studied brushwork and dignified portrayal of figures appear in Confucius and Two Disciples, a screen painting now in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The extent to which his artreflected the taste of the military rulers of his day may be deduced from the honours bestowed upon him. At age 17 he was appointed painter to the shogun and given an estate in the district of Edo (now Tokyo) called Kajibashi, which became the name associated with his branch of the Kano school. He decorated the walls of various palaces and castles, including Nijo Castle in Kyoto, the shogunâ€(TM)s castle at Nagoya, and the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Chi ama l'arte etnica sa che le sculture Asmat sono molto apprezzate dai collezionisti. Il Metropolitan Museum ne ha un'importante raccolta, così come il Tropenmuseum di Amsterdam. Gli Asmat formano una delle numerose etnie della Nuova Guinea occidentale. A dispetto del colonialismo e dei sovvertimenti politici, hanno conservato le loro tradizioni mantenendo vivo il culto degli antenati. Abili scultori e intagliatori, celebrano i propri avi modellando figure di guerrieri e di capi tribù. I temi e gli stili dell'arte Asmat sono ben rappresentati da questa coppia di sculture lignee. Una di esse, quella alta e sottile, rappresenta un guerriero che stringe fra le mani una lancia piantata nel terreno. Dalla testa dell'uomo sorge una figura che replica, in forma stilizzata, le fattezze del guerriero. Anche la seconda scultura raffigura un uomo armato. La sua mano destra stringe una lancia ornata di penne mentre la sinistra impugna un tamburo. Il guerriero porta legato alla schiena il tipico stiletto papuano, ricavato dal femore del casuario. Si notino gli elementi ornamentali piumati. Dimensioni della prima scultura (escluso il piedistallo): 76 cm. di altezza, 5 cm. di larghezza e 9 cm. di profondità. Drawing on little else but wits, raw courage, and unshakable faith in the old gods, and their aging leader, Opothleyahola, they made a desperate escape from Confederate troops that were closing in. Seeking to reach the protection of federal forces in Kansas, their dramatic journey, recounted here from a unique Creek/Muskogee perspective, was filled with hazards; their destination, with disillusion and despair. The fleeing tribes suffered on the trek from blizzards, disease, and starvation. Constant harassment and desperate pitched battles with rival bands of the Creek Nation led by the Confederate-allied McIntosh family, adjoining Cherokees under Colonel Stand Waitie, and Texan Confederate sympathizers whittled away the number of survivors. When they finally straggled into Kansas, two thousand were dead or missing. Even then, their trials were not over: Federal "protection" proved to be hollow and harsh. Along with many others, Old Opothleyahola himself died in one of the bleak Federal camps. The complexity of the relationship between Opothleyahola and McIntosh--and the Native American strategies they represented--the passion of the Civil War, and the drama of battles and pursuits fill the pages of this story of an earlier day's refugee plight. Told from the Native American view of the events, never before written, this narrative account relies heavily on Creek oral tradition. Personal interviews with members of the Muskogee Nation have been supplemented with academic research in state, federal, and university archives and in the records of the Museum of the Muskogee Nation in Okmulgee, Oklahoma.
