ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Brumley, Charles / Heilman, Carl / McKibben, Bill, PUBLISHER: Voyageur Press (MN), New York comes alive in the pages of "Wild New York." Author Charles Brumley and photographer Carl E. Heilman II traveled thousands of miles to give us this photographic portrait of the state's diverse and unique natural areas. Our state has nearly every type of natural landscape found in the continental United States New York is the majestic Niagara Falls and the sandy beaches of Long Island. It is the stunning, historic Hudson Valley and the massive inland seas of Lakes Erie and Ontario. It is the fragile acres of alpine flora above Adirondack tree line and the snowy skies of the Tug Hill Plateau. " Wild New York" is the natural beauty of our state; it is what we see, hear, and feel as we paddle the longest free-flowing river in the northeast, the Delaware River; hike the state's highest peak, Mt. Marcy; or gaze across the steep gorge of Cattaraugus Creek in the underappreciated Zoar Valley. It is the call of the loon on countless lakes and ponds throughout Adirondack Park; the pounding of a powerful ocean surf on Long Island. It is that still, golden late-summer afternoon when you know the Empire State is where you're meant to be.

Best known for performances in "A Few Good Men" and "The Usual Suspects," he shares never-before-heard stories of film legends like De Niro, Hanks, Howard, Lemon, Loren, Lucas, Martin, Mathau, Reiner, Scorcese, Singer, Willis, and more. When he gambled for a spot on the most coveted couch in showbiz, he had no agent, no auditions, no prospects. But his gut was right: A year later, his first sit with the king of late night led to three visits a year, every year, until Carson retired. Now a new media entrepreneur, Pollak is laughing proof that you can do anything you want--except have a rational conversation with Rip Torn, who's an evil, paranoid $# %.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Alexie, Sherman, PUBLISHER: Grove Press, Sherman Alexie is one of our most acclaimed and popular writers today. With Ten Little Indians, he offers nine poignant and emotionally resonant new stories about Native Americans who, like all Americans, find themselves at personal and cultural crossroads, faced with heartrending, tragic, sometimes wondrous moments of being that test their loyalties, their capacities, and their notions of who they are and who they love. In Alexie's first story, "The Search Engine," Corliss is a rugged and resourceful student who finds in books the magic she was denied while growing up poor. In "The Life and Times of Estelle Walks Above," an intellectual feminist Spokane Indian woman saves the lives of dozens of white women all around her to the bewilderment of her only child. "What You Pawn I Will Redeem" starts off with a homeless man recognizing in a pawnshop window the fancy-dance regalia that were stolen fifty years earlier from his late grandmother. Even as they often make us laugh, Alexie's stories are driven by a haunting lyricism and naked candor that cut to the heart of the human experience, shedding brilliant light on what happens when we grow into and out of each other.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Smith, Bonnie G., PUBLISHER: Harvard University Press, In this pathbreaking study of the gendering of the practices of history, Bonnie Smith resurrects the amateur history written by women in the nineteenth century--a type of history condemned as trivial by "scientific" male historians. She demonstrates the degree to which the profession defined itself in opposition to amateurism, femininity, and alternative ways of writing history. The male historians of the archive and the seminar claimed to be searching for "genderless universal truth," which in reality prioritized men's history over women's, white history over nonwhite, and the political history of Western governments over any other. Meanwhile, women amateurs wrote vivid histories of queens and accomplished women, of manners and mores, and of everyday life. Following the profession up to , "The Gender of History" traces the emergence of a renewed interest in social and cultural history which had been demeaned in the nineteenth century, when professional historians viewed themselves as supermen who could see through the surface of events to invisible meanings and motives. But Smith doesn't let late twentieth-century historians off the hook. She demonstrates how, even today, the practice of history is propelled by fantasies of power in which researchers imagine themselves as heroic rescuers of the inarticulate lower classes. The professionals' legacy is still with us, as Smith's extraordinary work proves. Acquista Ora

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Boscagli, Maurizia, PUBLISHER: Westview Press, When do our bodies cease to be ours alone? At what point and under what political and social circumstances do our bodies become the subtle, but no less complete, inscription of the will of another person, an institution, or a state? Maurizia Boscagli analyzes the early twentieth-century transformation of the male body from Forster's "unassuming black-coated clerk" and Eliot's "young man carbuncular" to the brutal, tanned musculature of fascism. She argues that this new male superman corporeality corresponded precisely with the rise of early mass consumer culture--generally associated with the female--and the advent of fascism. This mechanistic, polished, and vigorous male creature inevitably became an object of political and economic obedience and conformity, and in the concept of "the national body," a fighting machine.Boscagli takes the reader on a highly informed, literary, and cultural excursion through European culture between and . She stops for long, enlightening looks at Oscar Wilde and "The Picture of Dorian Gray," the Good War and the poet Rupert Brooke, Baden-Powell and the British Boy Scouts, and the primitive in D. H. Lawrence's "The Plumed Serpent." This erudite study about our obsessions with male physical perfection undergirds and explains the late-twentieth-century preoccupation with exercise, athletics, diet, and consumerism.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Timmer, Doug A. / Talley, Kathryn D. / Eitzen, D. Stanley, PUBLISHER: Westview Press, This book is the first to combine a cogent explanation of the economic and historical causes of homelessness with accounts of individuals and families on the streets, in soup lines, and in shelters. The human side of the story, told from ethnographies conducted in three diverse cities--Chicago, Denver, and Tampa--shows that there is no "culture of poverty" that makes people poor, just as there is no "culture of homelessness" that leaves people without shelter. Instead, the authors show that large numbers of people became homeless through the processes of urban and industrial decline.Homelessness is largely an urban phenomenon. It increased dramatically when cities witnessed the simultaneous loss of low-income housing and good-paying industrial jobs. However, the increase in the number of homeless people does not suggest a special social problem--arising from the character of individuals--but is the result of social and economic transformations in American cities since the late s.In this book the words of the homeless tell the stories of people who were "making it" before but eventually fell into circumstances of extreme poverty. The many paths taken to homelessness, revealed in their stories, speak to the changing conditions of inequality in the United States today and the need for new public policies.

Descrizione del libro, comprensivo di CD-ROM originale: This is purely a Delphi programmer's guide, but it unquestioningly well written, informative, and well-rounded: Anyone seeking to learn how Delphi's VCL component libraries work, how to development components of their own, or how to extend Delphi VCL components already available from Borland or third parties, should read this book. There is simply nothing else that comes close. Mr. Thorpe's writing style is clear, concise, and does a great job of exploring the topic at hand. Any competent Delphi programmer will be well capable of undertaking VCL development on their own if they have this book at their side. "Delphi Component Design" was written for the VCL [Borland's Acronym for "Visual Component Library"] as it was implemented in Delphi 3.0 - back in the mid to late 's: the implementation of VCL it describes is still the foundation underlying VCL as implemented in Delphi today, and is close enough to the modern implementation to still be a very useful text. However, since Delphi's product direction is to pursue.NET as opposed to enhancing the older VCL, the book's usefulness is limited to those who are seeking to maintain or enhance existing Delphi VCL-based applications. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Boger, Susan M., PUBLISHER: iUniverse.com, It is four o'clock in the morning on March , when a meltdown began at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant. As people sleep peacefully, unafraid of the smoking cement towers looming in the background, radioactive material is released into the environment and the Susquehanna River. Repeatedly reassured that they are not in any danger, most go on with their daily lives, including the residents of a rural town just a few miles away. But no one knows that Lloydsville is about to pay a hefty price for the sins of their nuclear neighbor. 30 years later, after an experimental popcorn crop is unintentionally irrigated with the radioactive river water, the corn mutates, wreaking havoc on Lloydsville. As two-headed frogs, fish with leg-like appendages, and aggressive insects invade the town with increasing frequency, the corn in Experimental Field 312 grows exceptionally large. Meanwhile Susan, a seasoned nurse, tries to shake off the feeling that something is terribly wrong. But as a bizarre chain of events unfolds, she realizes her intuition is spot on. In this science fiction tale, Susan and her family must find a way to kill the corn and bring an end to the nightmare--before it is too late for a tiny farm town and its people.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rakoff, David, PUBLISHER: Doubleday Canada, The inimitably witty David Rakoff, "This American Life "stalwart and bestselling author, looks at the modern world and his own life in defense of the commonsensical notion that you should always assume the worst. In this deeply funny memoir, David Rakoff examines his own life and the realities of our sunny, gosh-everyone-can-be-a-star contemporary culture. He finds that, pretty much as a universal rule, the best is not yet to come, adversity will triumph, justice will not be served, and your dreams won't come true. Although David has a long-nurtured abhorrence of "inspirational" memoirs, much of the book recounts his own personal experiences: the moment when being a tiny child no longer meant adults found him charming but instead meant other children found him a fun target; the late evening in Manhattan when he was young and the city seemed to brim with such possibility that the street shimmered in the moonlight — as he drew closer he realized the streets actually shimmered with rats in a feeding frenzy. He also weaves in his brand of acute and Oscar Wilde-worthy cultural criticism (the sad state of the outdated "House of Tomorrow" at Disneyland, for one). It all adds up to proof of the proposition: Always be a pessimist, and you'll never be disappointed.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ferretti, Patricia / Copp, Andrew / Tickle, Cheryll, PUBLISHER: John Wiley & Sons, The first edition of "Embryos, Genes and Birth Defects," edited by the late Peter Thorogood, was a radical new book aimed at bridging the gap between the medical disciplines of embryology and dysmorphology, and recent advances in cellular, molecular and developmental biology. This new edition remains unique in its breadth and brings up to date our understanding of birth defects and of the strategies utilized to gain such knowledge. It features new chapters on human cytogenetics, mutagenesis and the eyes and ears. The book presents key topics in developmental biology and explains how they provide the foundations for understanding clinical birth defects. The first six chapters introduce concepts and strategies adopted to elucidate developmental anomalies leading to birth defects. The book then focuses on specific organs and reviews the cellular and molecular mechanisms affecting their development and how disruption of these mechanisms by genetic or environmental factors may underlie certain birth defects. The chapters are concise and provide up-to-date coverage of topics in a format that is easily accessible and yet at the forefront of research. Written primarily for paediatricians, obstetricians, clinical geneticists and allied workers, this book guides the reader through the contribution of modern molecular biology to our understanding of human development. Developmental and cellular biologists will learn how errors in the cellular and genetic mechanism can lead to classical disorders, diseases and syndromes.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rubin Wolf, Rachel, PUBLISHER: North Light Books, Featured artist Jerry Stitt contemplates that "A painting is good not because it looks like something, but because it feels like something." The difference is passion - the kind of energy, excitement and pure joy that pulses through every page of this book. A brilliant collection of the best watercolors being created today, "Splash 10" explores "passion" through the work and words of 100 top contemporary painters. With each modern-day masterpiece, insightful firsthand commentary taps into the psyche of the artists to explore where their passion comes from, and where it leads them. These artists find the passion to paint in any number of places - a handful of peppermints, a rescued dog named Tugboat, visits to places where "even the walls have personality," and spectacular moments created by the warm late-afternoon sun partnering with rich, cool cast shadows. Some of them find passion in their materials (like rice paper) or in the very act of putting paint to paper, whether it be broad, wet strokes of pure color applied with big brushes and arm-swinging applications, or meditative, economical strokes. This edition of "Splash" is dedicated to discovering not only how today's artists create great watercolors, but what motivates them to be creative, work in this amazing medium, and portray the subjects they love.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rowe, Peter G. / Kuan, Seng, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), Built around snatches of discussion overheard in a Beijing design studio, this book explores attitudes toward architecture in China since the opening of the Treaty Ports in the s. Central to the discussion are the concepts of ti and yong, or "essence" and "form," Chinese characters that are used to define the proper arrangement of what should be considered modern and essentially Chinese. Ti and yong have gone through various transformations--for example, from "Chinese learning for essential principles and Western learning for practical application" to "socialist essence and cultural form" and an almost complete reversal to "modern essence and Chinese form." The book opens with a discussion of cultural developments in China in response to the forced opening to the West in the mid-nineteenth century, efforts to reform the Qing dynasty, and the Nationalist and Communist regimes. It then considers the return of overseas-educated Chinese architects and foreign influences on Chinese architecture, four architectural orientations toward tradition and modernity in the s and s, and the controversy over the use of "big roofs" and other sinicizing aspects of Chinese architecture in the s. The book then moves to the hard economic conditions of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, when architecture was almost abandoned, and the beginning of reform and opening up to the outside world in the late s and s. Finally, it looks at the present socialist market economy and Chinese architecture during the still incomplete process of modernization. It closes with a prognosis for the future.

Despite an increasing number of articles on Malory, there is a need for a general survey of recent research, whichl> Aspects of Malory /l>provides. The volume opens with a note by the late Professor Vinaver on Malory's prose, and three essays on Malory's Englishness and his English sources, including an essay by P. J. C. Field which argues for an English rather than a French origin for the l>Tale of Gareth/l>. This is followed by two essays on Malory's French sources, by Jill Mann and Mary Hynes-Berry. Therence McCarthy re-exasmines the sequence of the tales, and three further essays look at the scribal and textual tradition of Malory's work, in particular the relationship between the Winchester MS, Caxton's printed version, and the history of the MS. Finally, Richard R. Griffith reconsiders the authorship question, and proposes a long-forgotten Thomas Malory as the most likely candidate. There is a bibliography of recent research compiled by Professor Takamiya.Full of sound scholarship'. Paris, France: 's. Hundreds of houses are being razed, whole neighborhoods reduced to ashes. By order of Emperor Napoleon III, Baron Haussman has set into motion a series of large-scale renovations that will permanently alter the face of old Paris, moulding it into a "modern city." The reforms will erase generations of history--but in the midst of the tumult, one woman will take a stand. And as she delves into the ritual of remembering, Rose is forced to come to terms with a secret that has been buried deep in her heart for thirty years. "The House I Loved" is both a poignant story of one woman's indelible strength, and an ode to Paris, where houses harbor the joys and sorrows of their inhabitants, and secrets endure in the very walls...
