On Air

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Naqvi, Maniza, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, This novel from the author of Mass Transit unfolds over a six-hour period in which the main character, Naz, tells stories to listeners and callers over the radio on a late night talk show slot that she has been offered to fill for just one night. The characters in Naz's stories reflect her own pathologies as she tries to come to terms with her experiences. Each story is built around the theme of a personal crisis but, in the telling of her tales, the underlying state of crisis in society is beautifully captured and imaginatively expressed.

Grandpa Was a Cowboy and an Indian and Other Stories Grandpa

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Driving Hawk Sneve, Virginia / Sneve, Virginia Driving Hawk, PUBLISHER: University of Nebraska Press, "'Grandpa, ' I quietly asked, 'how come when you talk about the past, you say you were a cowboy and an Indian?' I sensed the regret in his short laugh when he answered, 'Cause I was both and both ways are gone forever.'" With great imagination and vigor, award-winning Lakota storyteller Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve treats readers to a collection of her best stories. She first spins tales of Lakota and Dakota generations today, of what the youngest can learn from their elders, if they choose to listen. The second group of stories, set in the turbulent and tragic years of the nineteenth century, teaches the need for understanding across cultures. The collection ends with spellbinding ancient Sioux tales about the birth of the universe, the deeds of legendary beings, and an unforgettable story about Old Woman, whose quill work maps out the end of the world.

Creating the American State: The Moral Reformers and the

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Stillman, Richard Joseph, II, PUBLISHER: University of Alabama Press, Whether renewing a driver's license, traveling on an airplane, or just watching in fascination as a robot probes Mars, we all participate in the everyday workings of the modern administrative state. As Stillman demonstrates in this study, however, we have not, until now, fully investigated or appreciated this administrative state's origins or its evolution into the entity that so affects our lives today. Stillman reveals that this modern enterprise emerged from a complex foundation of ideas and ideals rather than as a result of a simple, rational plan or cataclysmic event, as previously contended. In fact, he finds that the basis for our current administrative state lies in the lives of the seven individuals who, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, invented its various elements. Stillman also finds that although they lived at different times, these seven founders -- George William Curtis, Charles Francis Adams, Jr., Emory Upton, Jane Addams, Frederick W. Taylor, Richard Childs, and Louis Brownlow -- had much in common: all were products of intensely Protestant, small-town America, and all were motivated by strong moral idealism. Indeed, Stillman finds that state making in the United States has been a continuation of the Protestant goal to "protest and purify". Some names are more recognizable than others, but all, through remarkable moral fervor and exceptional leadership skills, invented the administrative practices and procedures so familiar today.

Nine Florida Stories by Marjory Stoneman Douglas

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Douglas, Marjory Stoneman / McCarthy, Kevin M., PUBLISHER: University Press of Florida, "A collection of tales boiling with real estate dealers, egret poachers, rumrunners, mango growers, sportsmen, land grubbers, murderers, and mosquitoes. First printed in "The Saturday Evening Post" during the s, '30s, and '40s, these stories constitute a rip-snorting glimpse back to a South Florida that now exists only in memory."--"Miami Herald" "Reflects the same concerns found in her better-known non-fiction work--a fascination with the beauty of Florida and a warning against its imminent destruction."--"Tallahassee Democrat" The subjects that would fire Marjory Stoneman Douglas's enthusiasm for the rest of her life first appeared in her short fiction published in the s. Florida's most celebrated environmentalist, the author of "The Everglades: River of Grass, " wrote even then about protecting South Florida's fragile ecosystem and the state's endangered species, about the dangers of short-sighted land development, and about Florida history. The nine stories in this first collection take place in a scattering of South Florida settings--Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, the Tamiami Trail, the Keys, the Everglades--and reveal the drama of hurricanes and plane crashes, of kidnappers, escaped convicts, and smugglers. Editor Kevin McCarthy relates each story to Douglas's life and points out the autobiographical touches which surface frequently in her stories.

Whispers from the Cotton Tree Root: Caribbean Fabulist

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hopkinson, Nalo, PUBLISHER: Invisible Cities Press, The lushness of language and the landscape, wild contrasts, and pure storytelling magic abound in this anthology of Caribbean writing. Steeped in the tradition of fabulism, where the irrational and inexplicable coexist with the realities of daily life, the stories in this collection are infused with a vitality and freshness that most writing traditions have long ago lost. From spectral slaving ships to women who shed their skin at night to become owls, stories from writers such as Jamaica Kincaid, Marcia Douglas, Ian MacDonald, and Kamau Brathwaite pulse with rhythms, visions, and the tortured history of this spiritually rich region of the world.

The Collected Raffles Stories

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hornug, E. W. / Hornung, E. W. / Bloom, Clive, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, This entertaining collection of crime stories presents the adventures of one of fiction's most enduring characters, the hyper-elegant A.J. Raffles, man-about-town, thief, and "finest slow bowler of his generation." With his partner in crime, Bunny Manders, Raffles preys on the rich, the greedy, and the unspeakably vulgar. His talents are exercised not only in London, but as far afield as Italy, Australia, and South Africa at the height of the Boer War. Throughout these exciting yarns the emphasis on panache, with intensifying suggestions of fallibility, goes to the heart of late Victorian attitudes and values.
