Preaching in Medieval England: An Introduction to Sermon

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Owst, G. R. / G. R., Owst, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, First published in , G. R. Owst's Preaching in Medieval England has remained a seminal work on the topic of English sermons of the period . In studying a largely neglected but important aspect of the medieval religious experience, the author adds considerably to our understanding of the pre-Reformation church. The book is in three parts - the preachers, the circumstances of the preaching and reception, and the sermons themselves. In the first section Owst discusses the different classes of preacher, the secular clergy, monks and particularly the wandering friars, famous for their preaching. In the second part he studies the experience of sermons, how, where and when they were delivered, and to whom. The examination of the sermons covers not only their content and language, but also the surviving manuals on preaching and eloquence, and advice to preachers. This wide ranging and scholarly book remains a crucial work on medieval preaching. Acquista Ora

Small Town in Mass Society: Class, Power, and Religion in a

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Vidich, Arthur J. / Bensman, Joseph, PUBLISHER: University of Illinois Press, First published in , Small Town in Mass Society set community studies on a new course by placing the small town within the framework of large-scale, bureaucratic mass society. Drawing attention to the dynamics of class and ethnicity in relation to economics and politics, this landmark work was among the first to document the consequences of centralized administration on life in American communities. Through a close study of "Springdale, New York", Arthur J. Vidich and Joseph Bensman depict the small town as continuously and increasingly drawn into the central institutions and processes of the total society. Vidich and Bensman based their conclusions on extensive interviews with and close observation of the inhabitants of one community. The original publication of the book caused a sharp response among the town's citizens who felt their trust had been violated and their town misrepresented. The present volume includes the editorials and correspondence evoked by that controversy, the authors' articles describing their methodology, a new foreword by Michael W. Hughey, and a new afterword in which Arthur J. Vidich gives an account of the creation and history of the book.

The Bishop's Palace: Architecture and Authority in Medieval

The Bishop's Palace: Architecture and Authority in Medieval

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Miller, Maureen, PUBLISHER: Cornell University Press, This lavishly illustrated book looks at the art and architecture of episcopal palaces as expressions of power and ideology. Tracing the history of the bishop's residence in the urban centers of northern Italy over the Middle Ages, Maureen C. Miller asks why this once rudimentary and highly fortified structure called a domus became a complex and elegant "palace" (palatium) by the late twelfth century. Miller argues that the change reflects both the emergence of a distinct clerical culture and the attempts of bishops to maintain authority in public life. She relates both to the Gregorian reform movement, which set new standards for clerical deportment and at the same time undercut episcopal claims to secular power. As bishops lost temporal authority in their cities to emerging communal governments, they compensated architecturally and competed with the communes for visual and spatial dominance in the urban center. This rivalry left indelible marks on the layout and character of Italian cities. Moreover, Miller contends, this struggle for power had highly significant, but mixed, results for western Christianity. On the one hand, as bishops lost direct governing authority in their cities, they devised ways to retain status, influence, and power through cultural practices. This response to loss was highly creative. On the other hand, their loss of secular control led bishops to emphasize their spiritual powers and to use them to obtain temporal ends. The coercive use of spiritual authority contributed to the emergence of a "persecuting society" in the central Middle Ages.

Peasants and Imperial Rule: Agriculture and Agrarian Society

Peasants and Imperial Rule: Agriculture and Agrarian Society

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Charlesworth, Neil, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, This book is a detailed historical study of agriculture and agrarian society in a major province of British India, the Bombay presidency. Its objective is to examine the impact of British rule on the Indian peasantry, and the changes it brought. Among the specific issues discussed by the author are the development of the British land revenue system, the pattern of expansion in commercial agriculture and the consequences in terms of ownership and organisation of land and agrarian social structure. Dr Charlesworth goes on to look at the role of government policy, the nature of peasant protest movements and the effects of the interwar depression. He concludes that significant long-term economic and social change did occur but that the highly 'differential' pattern to commercialisation prevented any structural transformation in the peasant economy and society.

Fairy Tales and Society: Illusion, Allusion, and Paradigm

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bottigheimer, Ruth B., PUBLISHER: University of Pennsylvania Press, This collection of exemplary essays by internationally recognized scholars examines the fairy tale from historical, folkloristic, literary, and psychoanalytical points of view. For generations of children and adults, fairy tales have encapsulated social values, often through the use of fixed characters and situations, to a far greater extent than any other oral or literary form. In many societies, fairy tales function as a paradigm both for understanding society and for developing individual behavior and personality.A few of the topics covered in this volume: oral narration in contemporary society; madness and cure in the " Nights"; the female voice in folklore and fairy tale; change in narrative form; tests, tasks, and trials in the Grimms' fairy tales; and folklorists as agents of nationalism. The subject of methodology is discussed by Torborg Lundell, Stven Swann Jones, Hans-Jorg Uther, and Anna Tavis.

Anthology of Medieval Music

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hoppin, Richard H., PUBLISHER: W. W. Norton & Company, Most of the seventy-one works have been freshly transcribed, and all have been newly engraved for this collection. In choosing the works for inclusion in this collection, many of which have been available in a modern edition, Professor Hoppin ranged widely throughout the gamut of medieval music forms. For example, all the movements for the Solemn Mass of Easter Day are offered along with typical troubadour and trouvere works. Examples of sequence, clausula, organum, and conductus are presented together with Latin and English love songs, motets, rondeaux, and ballate. The result is a history of medieval music in itself. there ar no snippets or frustrating samples, but only complete works or-at least-integral movements of larger works. All the characteristic styles of the period are represented, and text translations accompany each work.

Land and Labor in the Greek World

Land and Labor in the Greek World

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Burford, Alison / Cooper, Alison Burford, PUBLISHER: Johns Hopkins University Press, What value did the Greeks put on farming beyond its capacity to produce food? Who owned the land, and who worked it? Alison Burford examines the Greeks' preoccupation with land and agriculture to understand the nature of their society and culture in general. She focuses on how the need to make the land productive influenced social, economic, and cultural beliefs and practices throughout Greek society. Specific areas of study include land allotment in the early settlements, the function of the antidosis, Xenophon's true intent in his Oeconomicus, the understanding and use of the term peasant, environmental concerns, and nationalist feelings among tied laborers. "Whatever the balance of power and social prestige within a comunity, and however they were expressed in its constitution, landed interests played a critical role in determining political relationships and economic activities. The answer found to the question 'Who labored on the land?' shaped as decisively as anything else the character of Greek society....There can be little doubt that whenever a steady breeze got up about threshing time, most people in the Greek world would have remarked, 'Here was a fine day for winnowing.'" -- from Land and Labor in the Greek World.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Perera, Nihal, PUBLISHER: Westview Press, "Society and Space" traces the historical construction of social space in Sri Lanka. Utilizing a world-systems perspective, landscape interpretation, and theories of colonial architecture and urbanism, Nihal Perera looks at colonized, decolonized, and postcolonial Sri Lanka through the lens of successive spatial transformations. The author skillfully reveals the importance of construction, occupation, and the fashioning of territories, urban landscapes, and built forms, pointing out the interconnections and meanings of these spatial aspects as part of changing political, economic, and cultural systems. This book treats space and the built environment of Sri Lanka's place in the world system at different points in history. Yet, it also maintains an awareness of specific issues of local politics and culture. Writing from a position in the "postcolonial periphery," Perera argues that the politics governing the construction of space and spatial structures is of primary importance for those seeking to understand a particular society and culture.
