Polycrystalline Metal and Magnetic Thin Films : Volume

Polycrystalline Metal and Magnetic Thin Films : Volume

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Clemens, B. M. / Gignac, L. / MacLaren, J. M., PUBLISHER: Materials Research Society, The unprecedented growth in the semiconductor, electronics, and storage industries is the result of continued miniaturization of circuit devices, increases in chip functionality, and increased storage capacity and performance, along with a decrease in per-function cost. Hardware shrinkage has taken place both laterally and vertically, leading to similar decreases in the dimensions of interconnection wires, contact metallization, and magnetic storage footprints. The increasingly important role of surfaces, interfaces, defects, and impurities has raised serious materials questions about how to control the properties of polycrystalline thin films used in applications requiring tight performance tolerances. This is especially true as the dimensions of these films shrink to levels where 100 or less atomic layers are routinely being used to achieve critical materials properties (contact resistance, diffusion barriers, magnetic moments, etc.). The understanding of poly-crystalline film structures during growth and the evolution of various film properties with time and temperature is critical to the successful design and development of smaller devices. This volume focuses on the directions taken to understand and control the properties of polycrystalline materials.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Beloussov, L. V., PUBLISHER: Springer, This book is the first comprehensive attempt to consider the development of organisms as a multi-level feedback-linked self-organizing process. Accordingly, the data related to morphogenetic cell activities and to the development of entire organisms are reconsidered and reformulated in terms of theories of symmetry and self-organization, which is described in non-specialist terms. An important role for biomechanical feedback is emphasized. Two opposing approaches to development are outlined, a genocentric' one and a morphocentric' one, and the possibility of their combination is discussed. Unlike other books recently published in biotheoretical and biomathematical fields, this book is centered around developmental problems. Audience: Students and researchers in biology, biomechanics and mathematical modelling.

The Electrical Properties of Disordered Metals

The Electrical Properties of Disordered Metals

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Dugdale, J. S. / Clarke, D. R. / Suresh, S., PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, The theory of metallic conduction has, until recently, been confined to crystalline metals with atoms in regular arrays. The discovery of solid amorphous alloys led to an explosion of measurements of their electronic properties, and the emergence of a range of interesting low temperature phenomena. The book describes in physical terms the theory of the electrical conductivity, Hall coefficient, magnetoresistance and thermopower of disordered metals and alloys. The author begins by showing how conventional Boltzmann theory can be extended and modified when the mean free path of the conduction electrons becomes comparable with their wavelength and interionic separation. Dugdale explores the consequences of this and tests the theory by applying it to experimental data on metallic glasses. Designed as a self-contained review, the book will appeal to nonspecialist physicists, metallurgists and chemists with an interest in disordered metals.

The problems at the end of each chapter are well-chosen; there are more than 650 of them. The book is especially suitable for self-study, as the author frequently provides ample explanation not only of what he is proving, but also of how and why he is proving it. As a reference work for the specialist or a text for the student, the book is highly recommended." --- Mathematical Reviews (First Edition) "Since the first day of its appearance in , this book has been the standard reference in universal algebra, and no book since has reached its quality." --- Journal of Symbolic Logic (Second Edition)

Designing with Blends: Conceptual Foundations of

Designing with Blends: Conceptual Foundations of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Imaz, Manuel / Benyon, David, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), The evolution of the concept of mind in cognitive science over the past 25 years creates new ways to think about the interaction of people and computers. New ideas about embodiment, metaphor as a fundamental cognitive process, and conceptual integration--a blending of older concepts that gives rise to new, emergent properties--have become increasingly important in software engineering (SE) and human-computer interaction (HCI). If once computing was based on algorithms, mathematical theories, and formal notations, now the use of stories, metaphors, and blends can contribute to well-informed, sensitive software design. In "Designing with Blends," Manuel Imaz and David Benyon show how these new metaphors and concepts of mind allow us to discover new aspects of HCI-SE. After 60 years, digital technology has come of age, but software design has not kept pace with technological sophistication; people struggle to understand and use their computers, cameras, phones, and other devices. Imaz and Benyon argue that the dominance of digital media in our lives demands changes in HCI-SE based on advances in cognitive science. The idea of embodied cognition, they contend, can change the way we approach design by emphasizing the figurative nature of interaction. Imaz and Benyon offer both theoretical grounding and practical examples that illustrate the advantages of applying cognitive concepts to software design. A new view of cognition, they argue, will develop a cognitive literacy in software and interaction design that helps designers understand the opportunities of digital technology and provides people with a more satisfying interactive experience.

My Indian Boyhood

My Indian Boyhood

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Standing Bear, Luther, PUBLISHER: University of Nebraska Press, Although the traditional Sioux nation was in its last days when Luther Standing Bear was born in the s, he was raised in the ancestral manner to be a successful hunter and warrior and a respectful and productive member of Sioux society. Known as Plenty Kill, young Standing Bear belonged to the Western Sioux tribe that inhabited present-day North and South Dakota. In "My Indian Boyhood" he describes, with clarity and feeling lent by experience, the home life and education of Indian children. Like other boys, he played with toy bows and arrows in the tipi before learning to make and use them and became schooled in the ways of animals and in the properties of plants and herbs. His life would be very different from that of his ancestors, but he was not denied the excitement of killing his first buffalo before leaving to attend the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. Luther Standing Bear is the author of "Land of the Spotted Eagle," "My People the Sioux," and "Stories of the Sioux" (also Bison Books).
