Mathematical Methods in Queuing Theory

Mathematical Methods in Queuing Theory

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kalashnikov, Vladimir V., PUBLISHER: Springer, This volume presents an overview of mathematical methods used in queuing theory, and various examples of solutions of problems using these methods are given. Many of the topics considered are not traditional, and include general Markov processes, test functions, coupling methods, probability metrics, continuity of queues, quantitative estimates in continuity, convergence rate to the stationary state and limit theorems for the first occurrence times. Much attention is also devoted to the modern theory of regenerative processes. Each chapter concludes with problems and comments on the literature cited. For researchers and graduate students in applied probability, operations research and computer science.

Quantum Mechanics and Gravity

Quantum Mechanics and Gravity

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Sachs, Mendel, PUBLISHER: Springer, This book describes a paradigm change in modern physics from the philosophy and mathematical expression of the quantum theory to those of general relativity. The approach applies to all domains - from elementary particles to cosmology. The change is from the positivistic views in which atomism, nondeterminism and measurement are fundamental, to a holistic view in realism, wherein matter - electrons, galaxies, - are correlated modes of a single continuum, the universe. A field that unifies electromagnetism, gravity and inertia is demonstrated explicitly, with new predictions, in terms of quaternion and spinor field equations in a curved spacetime. Quantum mechanics emerges as a linear, flatspace approximation for the equations of inertia in general relativity.

Understanding Physics

Understanding Physics

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: O'Sullivan, Colm / Mansfield, Michael, PUBLISHER: John Wiley & Sons, This unique book places emphasis on the understanding of the material presented by adopting a reflective approach towards the scientific method used. Knowledge of algebra, geometry and trigonometry is required however, the authors introduce more advanced mathematical methods in the context of the physical problems which are used for analysis. Modern physics topics, including quantum mechanics and relativity are introduced early and are integrated with more "classical" material from which they have evolved.

Convex Analysis and Global Optimization

Convex Analysis and Global Optimization

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hoang, Tuy / Hoang Tuy, Tuy / Hoang Tuy, PUBLISHER: Springer, Due to the general complementary convex structure underlying most nonconvex optimization problems encountered in applications, convex analysis plays an essential role in the development of global optimization methods. This book develops a coherent and rigorous theory of deterministic global optimization from this point of view. Part I constitutes an introduction to convex analysis, with an emphasis on concepts, properties and results particularly needed for global optimization, including those pertaining to the complementary convex structure. Part II presents the foundation and application of global search principles such as partitioning and cutting, outer and inner approximation, and decomposition to general global optimization problems and to problems with a low-rank nonconvex structure as well as quadratic problems. Much new material is offered, aside from a rigorous mathematical development. Audience: The book is written as a text for graduate students in engineering, mathematics, operations research, computer science and other disciplines dealing with optimization theory. It is also addressed to all scientists in various fields who are interested in mathematical optimization.

Monte Carlo Methods, Basics

Monte Carlo Methods, Basics

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kalos, Malvin H. / Whitlock, Paula A., PUBLISHER: Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH, This introduction to Monte Carlo Methods seeks to identify and study the unifying elements that underlie their effective application. It focuses on two basic themes. The first is the importance of random walks as they occur both in natural stochastic systems and in their relationship to integral and differential equations. The second theme is that of variance reduction in general and importance sampling in particular as a technique for efficient use of the methods. Random walks are introduced with an elementary example in which the modelling of radiation transport arises directly from a schematic probabilistic description of the interaction of radiation with matter. Building on that example, the relationship between random walks and integral equations is outlined. The applicability of these ideas to other problems is shown by a clear and elementary introduction to the solution of the Schrodinger equation by random walks. The detailed discussion of variance reduction includes Monte Carlo evaluation of finite-dimensional integrals. Special attention is given to importance sampling, partly because of its intrinsic interest in quadrature, partly because of its general usefulness in the solution of integral equations. One significant feature is that Monte Carlo Methods treats the "Metropolis algorithm" in the context of sampling methods, clearly distinguishing it from importance sampling. Physicists, chemists, statisticians, mathematicians, and computer scientists will find Monte Carlo Methods a complete and stimulating introduction.

Quantum Mechanics of Fundamental Systems: The Quest for

Quantum Mechanics of Fundamental Systems: The Quest for

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Henneaux, Marc / Zanelli, Jorge, PUBLISHER: Springer, This is a collection of contributed papers by former collaborators and colleagues of Claudio Bunster (formerly Teitelboim). The topics include General Relativity, Quantum Gravity, String Theory; from historical reviews to current research; from mathematical structures underlying the fundamental interactions, to cosmological scenarios describing the universe at its birth. Each contribution covers a topic in a self-contained manner, including all the references and illustrations to make it easy to read separately. The volume covers a number of important topics in theoretical physics of the last 30 years. Many of the seeds of string theory like supergravity, the AdS/CFT correspondence, p-form fields, electric-magnetic dualities, were discovered first in the context of gravitation by Bunster and his collaborators. This volume is rooted in this tradition and makes it an interesting source for theoretical physicists engaged in current research.
