The book sets out the traditional view that knowledge is justified true belief and then presents Gettier's challenge to this theory. Three alternative accounts of knowledge--the "reliable method" account, the "casual" account, and Nozick's "tracking" account--are examined. Fisher and Everitt argue in favor of attending to justified belief rather than knowledge and present a view which tentatively favors a "casual" theory of justified belief. Next the authors assess and reject "foundationalism," a popular position in modern philosophy. Though foundationalism about empirical beliefs is commonly discussed in textbooks, this book is unique in giving foundationalism about a priori beliefs equal and expert consideration. In the second half of the book the authors present alternatives to modern epistemology, including coherentism, Quine's "naturalized epistemology," and Rorty's critique. These discussions are undertaken with a great deal of sensitivity to the needs of the beginning student of epistemology.

His studied brushwork and dignified portrayal of figures appear in Confucius and Two Disciples, a screen painting now in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The extent to which his artreflected the taste of the military rulers of his day may be deduced from the honours bestowed upon him. At age 17 he was appointed painter to the shogun and given an estate in the district of Edo (now Tokyo) called Kajibashi, which became the name associated with his branch of the Kano school. He decorated the walls of various palaces and castles, including Nijo Castle in Kyoto, the shogunââŹ(TM)s castle at Nagoya, and the Kyoto Imperial Palace. He painted the scrolls illustrating events in the life of the first Tokugawa shogun, Ieyasu, and decorated the porticoes of IeyasuââŹ(TM)s mausoleum at the Tosho Shrine in Nikko. At age 34 Kano assumed the temple name TanââŹ(TM)yu. Two years later he was raised to an exalted position in the Buddhist clergy. The Guns of Ticonderoga

While the account of the boys' adventures enroute is fiction, they are representative of the type of experiences many young people had in growing up and assuming adult responsibilities while living on the frontier of early America. In November George Washington and his militia had the British forces in Boston, MA blockaded from the mainland. The British did not have sufficient forces in Boston to break the blockade. Washington did not have sufficient heavy weapons (cannon and mortars) to force the British to leave Boston. It was a stalemate. Henry Knox and his brother William volunteered to bring some of the heavy weapons from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston. Washington agreed, and with the assistance provided by General Phillip Schuyler at Albany, NY the Knox expedition moved pounds cannon and mortars across lakes, rivers, streams and mountains during the winter of . When the weapons arrived, Washington placed them in a strategic location overlooking Boston and its harbor, thereby convincing the British in March to evacuate Boston. The result was that Boston and New England remained in the hands of the Americans throughout the Revolutionary War. The success of the Knox expedition and its result for the outcome of the American Revolution is little known but deserves the attention provided here and elsewhere. This book is a good read for anyone who is interested in the contributions young citizens made tothe success of the American Revolution.
