The Eagle River Valley

The Eagle River Valley

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Welch, Shirley / Eagle County Historical Society, PUBLISHER: Arcadia Publishing (SC), Starting as a trickle in the Rocky Mountains, the Eagle River emerges in a glacial valley, cuts through a spectacular gorge near Red Cliff, and then creates the broad flood plain of the Eagle River Valley. At Dotsero, the river joins the mighty Colorado River. As long as humans have settled along the river, they have depended on it for their livelihood, trapping beaver for hats, mining gold and silver, collecting water for locomotive engines and channeling it for crops and ranching, harvesting ice for food preservation, and, most recently, converting water into snow with modern machines. Today the Eagle River Valley is the backbone of two of the greatest ski areas in the world, Vail and Beaver Creek. Sparkling through the ancient riverbed, the Eagle River continues its course to this day, flowing through the same valley that drew pioneers here in the 19th century.

With the coming of railroads, the nature of the Columbia as a free-flowing river changes as man attempts to control it by jetties at its tumultuous bar, by locks and canals at the cascades and Celilo Falls, and by dams providing power, navigation, irrigation, and flood control. These changes are not always welcomed by the Warren family, but because this is the watershed in which they have chosen to live, they must make the best of it. The climax of the novel, the massive flood of -- whose destructive crest cannot be controlled by the river's three existing dams -- gives the dam-builders the final argument they need to begin the era of engineering that eventually will bring the second largest watershed in the United States under man's control. By the time the process is completed fifty years later, the once free-flowing river will be impeded by 161 dams.
