Not a Tame Lion: The Spiritual Legacy of C.S. Lewis

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Glaspey, Terry W. / Grant, George, PUBLISHER: GCB Publishing Group, C.S. Lewis in his time was a teacher, a scholar, a public speaker, a writer, a friend, a man of simple tastes; above all, he was a man surrendered to God. His legacy is a rich one: in his books we find a winsome and creative personality who was unswerving in his commitment to orthodoxy, and whose tremendous intellect was wedded not only to his reason but to a powerful imagination (for it was in his flights of literary fantasy that his deepest perceptions of God were birthed). This book is a finely crafted introduction to the character and works of a man who was a true "defender of the faith" -- both in his creation of Aslan and the Land of Narnia and in his non-fiction apologia.

The Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission: Civil Rights

The Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission: Civil Rights

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Katagiri, Yasuhiro, PUBLISHER: University Press of Mississippi, In , two years after the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously outlawed legally imposed racial segregation in public schools, Mississippi created the State Sovereignty Commission. This was the executive agency established "to protect the sovereignty of the State of Mississippi... from encroachment thereon by the Federal Government." The code word encroachment implied the state's strong resolve to preserve and protect the racial status quo. In the nomenclature the formality of the word sovereignty supposedly lent dignity to the actions of the Commission. For all practical purposes the Sovereignty Commission intended to wage this Deep South state's monolithic resistance to desegregation and to the ever-intensifying crusade for civil rights in Mississippi. In the papers of the Commission were made available for examination. No other state has such extensive and detailed documentary records from a similar agency. Exposed to public light, they unmasked the Commission as a counterrevolutionary department for political and social intrigue that infringed on individual constitutional rights and worked toward discrediting the civil rights movement by tarnishing the reputations of activists. As the eyes of the citizenry studied the records, the Commission slid from sovereign and segregated to unsavory and abominable. This book, the first to give a comprehensive history of this watchdog agency, shows how, to this day, the Sovereignty Commission remains obscure, debated, and for many citizens a star chamber of the most sinister sort. Why was the Commission created? What were some of the political and social climates that initiated its creation? What were its activities during its seventeen years? What was its impact on the course of Mississippi and southern history? Drawing on the newly opened materials at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, this examination gives answers to such questions and traces the vicissitudes that took the Commission from governmental limelight to public opprobrium. This book also looks at the attitudes of the state's white citizenry, who, upon realizing the Commission's failure, saw the importance of a nonviolent accommodation of civil rights. Yasuhiro Katagiri, an associate professor of American history and government at Tokai University in Kanagawa, Japan, has been published in such periodicals as "American Review" and "49th Parallel: An Interdisciplinary Journal of North American Studies."

Requiem for a German Past: A Boyhood Among the Nazis

Requiem for a German Past: A Boyhood Among the Nazis

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Herbst, Jurgen, PUBLISHER: University of Wisconsin Press, Jurgen Herbst's account of growing up in Nazi Germany from to is a boy's experience of anti-Semitism and militarism from the inside. His father was a loving parent, a scholar, a man of principle -- and a German officer. Herbst was a middle-class boy in a Lutheran family that saw value in Prussian military ideals and a mythic German past. His is a compelling tale of moral awakening. He recalls his confusion as some of his classmates are no longer welcome at his school, and his consternation as he tries co reconcile what he learned from his favorite teachers and what was subsequently taught by their party replacements. His description of walking to school the morning after Kristallnacht is clear and chilling. A Hitler youth in the making, he joined the Jungvolk and slowly became aware of the real nature of the National Socialist regime. The story of that evolution -- a unique, insider's view of the Nazi youth movement -- is inspired by young Jurgen's deep friendships with his fellow students and their dedication to a military code of personal honor and loyalty. His devotion to those young men allowed him to endure scorn and deprivation and to risk personal well-being, even life, in the face of a brutal evil that demanded unquestioning allegiance.

Finding Our Unity in the Scriptures

Finding Our Unity in the Scriptures

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Huffstetler, Joel W., PUBLISHER: Authorhouse, This book grew out of a Bible Conference at Kanuga Conference Center in October, , led by Dr. George L. Carey, the 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury. Archbishop Carey's theme was the life and ministry of St. Paul, with a focus on the Letter to the Ephesians. I was privileged to serve as a workshop leader and preacher during the conference, and I chose as the theme of my workshop to study St. Paul and reconciliation, using Ephesians as our primary text. The main thrust of the workshop was to study selected passages from Ephesians in detail, and to look to St. Paul's writings for guidance regarding reconciliation in the Body of Christ. We live in a time when there is such a pressing need in the Church for reconciliation, a rekindling of a spirit of love and mutual respect rather than the judgment and suspicion which all too often characterize relations among Christians who find themselves in disagreement with one another regarding the divisive issues of our time. This book advocates a renewed realization that in Jesus Christ what unites us as Christians is far greater than what divides us. These essays on selected passages from Ephesians and the concluding essay, The Way Forward, are offered in the cause of reconciliation. They are suitable for study by individuals as well as parish and diocesan study groups seeking reconciliation in the Church. Study questions are presented at the end of each chapter to foster reflection and discussion. "I welcome this book as an offering to us all. It presents one means for discovering a receptive stance to God's will for us, even in the midst of the harsh rhetoric and self-justifying proclamations of our day. I am grateful to Joel Huffstetler for hiscontribution to the forming of an attitude of the heart committed to reconciliation." From the Afterword by The Rt. Rev. Charles G. vonRosenberg, Bishop of East Tennessee.

The Prince and His Lady: The Love Story of the Duke of Kent

The Prince and His Lady: The Love Story of the Duke of Kent

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Gillen, Mollie, PUBLISHER: Goodread Biographies, In keeping with the practice of the 18th century, Edward Augustus, son of George III and the Duke of Kent, commissioned a friend to find him a mistress. From this unpromising and unromantic beginning grew his 27-year-long love affair with Julie de St Laurent. Edward was sent to command the garrison at the British naval base of Halifax, and Julie went with him. Together they spent many happy years there and in Quebec City. The Duke inscribed his devotion on the landscape at his estate near Halifax, where walks were laid out to spell "Julie," and a heart-shaped pond was dug as a testament to their love. When the only heir to England's throne died, however, the Duke's duty to make a royal marriage and produce more heirs was clear. He and Julie parted, though he continued to concern himself about her well-being and financial stability. As it turned out, Edward was successful and the future Queen Victoria was born from his royal marriage. Edward died not long afterwards, leaving behind him several fine public buildings in Halifax as monuments of his time in that city. "The Prince and His Lady" is both a moving love story and a fascinating portrait of the social life of Canada's early history.

Yet in the wake of the collapse of Marxism-Leninism in Eastern Europe the question arises as to how important his work really is for us now. An important dimension of this volume is to place Marx's writings in their historical context and to separate what he actually said from what others (in particular, Engels) interpreted him as saying. Informed by current debates and new perspectives, the volume provides a comprehensive coverage of all the major areas to which Marx made significant contributions.
