Le sue opere sono considerate una anticipazione di temi pacifisti nel campo della space opera e della fantascienza hard. Nato a Belfast (Ulster - Irlanda del Nord) il 07 aprile fu uno scrittore di fantascienza, piuttosto noto negli anni sessanta del secolo scorso. La sua aspirazione giovanile era di studiare medicina, ma le modeste risorse finanziarie della sua famiglia glielo impedirono. I suoi racconti e romanzi riprendono questa sua insoddisfatta aspirazione all'approccio scientifico e le sue storie spessissimo sono molto accurate e lo fanno considerare come uno dei maestri della "hard science fiction". Non riuscì a diventare scrittore professionista a tempo pieno, e seppur ebbe riconoscimenti dell'establishment (nel tenne a Belfast un corso di letteratura presso la "Workers Educational Association", e per molti anni fu membro del Consiglio della British Science Fiction Association e della Irish Science Fiction Association), nella sua biografia anglosassone si riporta che continuava a scrivere solo nel tempo libero e di sera. Continuò a scrivere anche dopo il suo pensionamento nel , dovuto a forti problemi di vista causati dal diabete di cui era afflitto. In Irlanda la memoria di James White è mantenuta vita tramite il James White Award Science Fiction Short Story Competition [1]riservato a scrittori di short stories, non professionisti, di lingua inglese, con temi rigorosamente di FS.
