ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hassam, Andrew, PUBLISHER: Sussex Academic Press, In the last twenty-five years of the 19th century, around visitors from Australia landed in Britain. As members of the colonial elite, they sailed to the Old Country to experience their Britishness: they toured Westminster Abbey; they visited graves of parents; they threw snowballs at Christmas. Yet they were also aware of themselves as Australians. In , one Irishman wrote of his birthplace: 'The north of Ireland is a disgusting climate for an Australian who loves his blue skies and glorious sunshine.' Even London could disappoint: I have seen many curious things here not to be seen at home but it's not half the place I expected to see - hardly worth coming for.' Colonial Australians were British, but not of Britain, and their diaries and letters offer a distinctive insight into nineteenth-century Britain. Using unpublished diaries and letters, this book offers a unique and cross-disciplinary approach to Cultural History. It considers both British and Australian national identities as the products of cultural displacement.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Viney, Michael, PUBLISHER: Blackstaff Press, This memorable journal of one year in a remote cottage on the west Irish coast is destined to become a classic of Irish nature writing. For nearly twenty years, Michael Viney's popular column in the Irish Times, "Another Life, " has captured the beauties and mysteries of the natural world in Ireland. This lyrical month-by-month journal affirms his reputation as a uniquely gifted, compassionate, and informed commentator. A Year's Turning chronicles his family's life of self-sufficiency in the country. Viney weaves personal memories and reflections as he observes the effects of one year's passing on the land, animals, and landscape around him, to create a "mosaic of all the years, each month an essay in remembrance." He begins with January and the snow, gale-force winds, and rough seas. Come June, the house "breathes gently, all doors and windows open to whatever breeze there is...besieged by light." Come December, it ends, or begins again, the year's turning. This is the culmination of two decades lived close to land and its creatures.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Pestana, Carla Gardina, PUBLISHER: Harvard University Press, Between and , England, Scotland, and Ireland faced civil war, invasion, religious radicalism, parliamentary rule, and the restoration of the monarchy. Carla Gardina Pestana offers a sweeping history that systematically connects these cataclysmic events and the development of the infant plantations from Newfoundland to Surinam. By , the English Atlantic emerged as religiously polarized, economically interconnected, socially exploitative, and ideologically anxious about its liberties. War increased both the proportion of unfree laborers and ethnic diversity in the settlements. Neglected by London, the colonies quickly developed trade networks, especially from seafaring New England, and entered the slave trade. Barbadian planters in particular moved decisively toward slavery as their premier labor system, leading the way toward its adoption elsewhere. When by the s the governing authorities tried to impose their vision of an integrated empire, the colonists claimed the rights of "freeborn English men," making a bid for liberties that had enormous implications for the rise in both involuntary servitude and slavery. Changes at home politicized religion in the Atlantic world and introduced witchcraft prosecutions. Pestana presents a compelling case for rethinking our assumptions about empire and colonialism and offers an invaluable look at the creation of the English Atlantic world.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bradley, James E. / Van Kley, Dale K., PUBLISHER: University of Notre Dame Press, Religion and Politics in Enlightenment Europe, a collection of original essays from leading scholars, demonstrates that the collapse of the post-Reformation confessional state was more the result of religious dissent from within, much of it orthodox, than attacks of an anti-religious Enlightenment. In sharp contrast to the Reformation-era religious conflicts which tended to pit Protestant and Catholic confessions and states against each other, the eighteenth-century religious conflicts described in Religion and Politics in Enlightenment Europe took place within the various confessional establishments and states that founded and maintained them, such as Russian Orthodoxy in the East and the Anglican Establishment in England and Ireland. In the course of its analysis, Religion and Politics in Enlightenment Europe destroys the notion of any kind of privileged relationship between "religion" and political or social "reaction." This book reveals the religious roots of modern ideas of individual rights and limitations on government, as well as the imperative of political order and the need for social hierarchy. It also shows the impossibility of any purely secular treatment of eighteenth-century European political history or institutions. Based on fresh, primary research as well as a synthesis of secondary sources, Religion and Politics in Enlightenment Europe turns the familiar eighteenth century of the textbooks upside down and inside out, challenging the dominant narratives of secularization and inevitable conclusion in the French Revolution.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fletcher, Anthony / Roberts, Peter, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, In this volume seventeen distinguished historians of early modern Britain pay tribute to an outstanding scholar and teacher. Several present reviews of major areas of debate: of the significance of the regulations which determined the social and legal status of professional actors in Elizabethan England, of Protestant ideas about marriage, of the political significance of the Anglo-Scottish Union, of relations between the Churches of England, Scotland and Ireland under the early Stuarts, and of the riddle of the inner dynamic of the experience of emigration of New England. Case-studies in the social and religious history of the period include the relationship between ideas of cleanliness and godliness, the flowering of the notion of unitive Protestantism in two declarations on behalf of the National Church and provincial preaching at a moment of political crisis in the north of England. Three essays draw on literary evidence to explore attitudes to men of war, the use of the murder pamphlet as a Puritan conversion narrative and the service provided by scholarly readers for politically influential public figures. Two essays make impressive use of fieldwork to reveal how the churches of James I and VI's two kingdoms were furnished and how the gardens of Sir Nicholas and Sir Francis Bacon illuminate their minds and attitudes. The European dimension is represented by an essay on Nicolas Pithou's history of the Reformation in the city of Troyes. This very wide-ranging and fascinating collection of essays will appeal both to specialists in the period and to those interested in the social and cultural history of early modern Britain.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: French, Tana, PUBLISHER: HODDER EXPORT, The mesmerizing fourth novel of the Dublin murder squad by "New York Times" bestselling author Tana French Mick "Scorcher" Kennedy, the brash cop from Tana French's bestselling "Faithful Place," plays by the book and plays hard. That's what's made him the Murder squad's top detective--and that's what puts the biggest case of the year into his hands. On one of the half-built, half-abandoned "luxury" developments that litter Ireland, Patrick Spain and his two young children are dead. His wife, Jenny, is in intensive care. At first, Scorcher and his rookie partner, Richie, think it's going to be an easy solve. But too many small things can't be explained. The half dozen baby monitors, their cameras pointing at holes smashed in the Spains' walls. The files erased from the Spains' computer. The story Jenny told her sister about a shadowy intruder who was slipping past all the locks. And Broken Harbor holds memories for Scorcher. Seeing the case on the news sends his sister Dina off the rails again, and she's resurrecting something that Scorcher thought he had tightly under control: what happened to their family one summer at Broken Harbor, back when they were children. With her signature blend of police procedural and psychological thriller, French's new novel goes full throttle with a heinous crime, creating her most complicated detective character and her best book yet.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Defoe, Daniel, PUBLISHER: Wildside Press, We set out on the 5th of February from Ireland, and had a very fair gale of wind for some days. As I remember, it might be about the 20th of February in the evening late, when the mate, having the watch, came into the round-house and told us he saw a flash of fire, and heard a gun fired; and while he was telling us of it, a boy came in and told us the boatswain heard another. This made us all run out upon the quarterdeck, where for a while we heard nothing; but in a few minutes we saw a very great light, and found that there was some very terrible fire at a distance; immediately we had recourse to our reckonings, in which we all agreed that there could be no land that way in which the fire showed itself, no, not for five hundred leagues, for it appeared at WNW. Upon this, we concluded it must be some ship on fire at sea; and as, by our hearing the noise of guns just before, we concluded that it could not be far off, we stood directly towards it, and were presently satisfied we should discover it, because the further we sailed, the greater the light appeared; though, the weather being hazy, we could not perceive anything but the light for a while. In about half-an-hour's sailing, the wind being fair for us, though not much of it, and the weather clearing up a little, we could plainly discern that it was a great ship on fire in the middle of the sea....
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Glynn, Alan, PUBLISHER: Picador USA, "Timely, topical, and thrilling."-- John Connolly "A terrific read...completely involving."-- George Pelecanos "WINTERLAND sets a dramatically high benchmark for emerald noir. With all the operatic inevitability of Greek tragedy, it anatomises what greed has done to Ireland. A resonant, memorable and uncomfortable read."-- Val McDermid "This is the colossus of Irish crime fiction, what Mystic River did for Dennis Lehane, WINTERLAND should do for Alan Glynn, it is a noir masterpiece, the bar against which all future works will be judged."-- Ken Bruen "Winterland" is a blistering unputdownable novel about power, lies and the corrupting influence of money. It is the first in a series on the dark and clandestine underside of globalization and announces a compelling new voice in contemporary crime writing. The worlds of business, politics and crime collide when two men with the same name, from the same family, die on the same nightâone death is a gangland murder, the other, apparently, a road accident. Was it a coincidence? Thatâs the official version of events. But when a family member, Gina Rafferty, starts asking questions, this notion quickly unravels. Devastated by her loss, Ginaâs grief is tempered, and increasingly fuelled, by angerâbecause the more sheâs told that it was all a coincidence, that gangland violence is commonplace, that people die on our roads every day of the week, the less sheâs prepared to accept it. Told repeatedly that she should stop asking questions, Gina becomes more determined than ever to find out the truth, to establish a connection between the two deathsâbut in doing so she embarks on a path that will push certain powerful people to their limits...

Writer Brian Moore emigrated from Ireland to Canada in the late s and found work at the Montreal Gazette, where he also found William Weintraub embarking upon a career as a freelance journalist. When he travelled to Paris, Weintraub saw an old friend and former Gazette writer, Mavis Gallant, who filled him in on the tribulations of the expatriate writer's life (""My room is enormous and the radiator very small indeed""). Gallant introduced Weintraub to another Montreal writer, Mordecai Richler, also pursuing a career as a novelist while living a gloriously Bohemian life. Weintraub joined Richler for a while in Ibiza (he later introduced him to Brian Moore), and later they kept in touch. (""Dear Bill: I got your highly unintellectual letter yesterday and it confirmed my suspicions that you slipped a chair under your arse in the Deux Magots as soon as you arrived in Paris and probably haven't moved since."") In these years, Gallant had her short stories published for the first time in the New Yorker, Moore methodically churned out money-making thrillers while working on "The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne," and Richler wrote his first acclaimed book, "The Acrobats." Weintraub, meanwhile, returned to Montreal, where he saw published his brilliant comic novel, "Why Rock the Boat?" William Weintraub weaves together his own memories of the s with letters both to and from his literary colleagues. The letters and his recollections are always fascinating, often hilarious, and provide intimate insight into the lives and work of some of Canada's finest contemporary writers.
