ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lewis, R. Barry / Stout, Charles B. / Wesson, Cameron B., PUBLISHER: University Alabama Press, Archaeologists and architects draw upon theoretical perspectives from their fields to provide valuable insights into the structure, development, and meaning of prehistoric communities. Architecture is the most visible physical manifestation of human culture. The built environment envelops our lives and projects our distinctive regional and ethnic identities to the world around us. Archaeology and architecture find common theoretical ground in their perspectives of the homes, spaces, and communities that people create for themselves. Although archaeologists and architects may ask different questions and apply different methods, the results are the same--a deeper understanding of what it means to be human. In this volume, prominent archaeologists examine the architectural design spaces of Mississippian towns and mound centers of the eastern United States. The diverse Mississippian societies, which existed between A.D. 900 and , created some of the largest and most complex Native American archaeological sites in the United States. The dominant architectural feature shared by these communities was one or more large plazas, each of which was often flanked by buildings set on platform mounds. The authors describe the major dimensions of an architectural grammar, centered on the design of the plaza and mound complex that was shared by different societies across the Mississippian world. They then explore these shared architectural features as physical representations or metaphors for Mississippian world views and culture.

Evolutionary Computation in Bioinformatics

Evolutionary Computation in Bioinformatics

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fogel, Gary B. / Corne, David W., PUBLISHER: Morgan Kaufmann Publishers, Bioinformatics has never been as popular as it is today. The genomics revolution is generating so much data in such rapid succession that it has become difficult for biologists to decipher. In particular, there are many problems in biology that are too large to solve with standard methods. Researchers in evolutionary computation (EC) have turned their attention to these problems. They understand the power of EC to rapidly search very large and complex spaces and return reasonable solutions. While these researchers are increasingly interested in problems from the biological sciences, EC and its problem-solving capabilities are generally not yet understood or applied in the biology community. This book offers a definitive resource to bridge the computer science and biology communities. Gary Fogel and David Corne, well-known representatives of these fields, introduce biology and bioinformatics to computer scientists, and evolutionary computation to biologists and computer scientists unfamiliar with these techniques. The fourteen chapters that follow are written by leading computer scientists and biologists who examine successful applications of evolutionary computation to various problems in the biological sciences. * Describes applications of EC to bioinformatics in a wide variety of areas including DNA sequencing, protein folding, gene and protein classification, drug targeting, drug design, data mining of biological databases, and biodata visualization. * Offers industrial and academic researchers in computer science, biology, and bioinformatics an important resource for applying evolutionary computation. * Includes a detailed appendix of biological data resources.

Pacific

Pacific

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ambrose, Hugh, PUBLISHER: Canongate Books, In this companion to the HBO(r) miniseries-executive produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Goetzman-Hugh Ambrose reveals the intertwined odysseys of four U.S. Marines and a U.S. Navy carrier pilot during World War II. Between America's retreat from China in late November and the moment General MacArthur's airplane touched down on the Japanese mainland in August of , five men connected by happenstance fought the key battles of the war against Japan. From the debacle in Bataan, to the miracle at Midway and the relentless vortex of Guadalcanal, their solemn oaths to their country later led one to the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot and the others to the coral strongholds of Peleliu, the black terraces of Iwo Jima and the killing fields of Okinawa, until at last the survivors enjoyed a triumphant, yet uneasy, return home. In "The Pacific," Hugh Ambrose focuses on the real-life stories of the five men who put their lives on the line for our country. To deepen the story revealed in the miniseries and go beyond it, the book dares to chart a great ocean of enmity known as The Pacific and the brave men who fought. Some considered war a profession, others enlisted as citizen soldiers. Each man served in a different part of the war, but their respective duties required every ounce of their courage and their strength to defeat an enemy who preferred suicide to surrender. The medals for valor which were pinned on three of them came at a shocking price-a price paid in full by all.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Leschak, Peter M. / Leschak, P., PUBLISHER: HarperOne, "On October , a wildfire of staggering immensity transformed the lumbering town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin (population ), into a literal, burning hell. It was the deadliest fire in North American history. At least people died, and the actual number of fatalities is unknown. Eighteen hundred square miles of woods, fields, and settlements were burned. By cruel coincidence, it was the very day and hour of the Great Chicago Fire.... The unlikely simultaneity of the two infernos has rendered Peshtigo unknown to most Americans.April : On the brink of one of the most ferocious fire seasons ever recorded, and faced with the challenge of commanding an elite attack helicopter team, wildland firefighter Peter Leschak discovers Father Pernin's written account of surviving the wildfire that devastated Peshtigo. As he takes us through Father Pernin's dangerous clash with the Great Peshtigo Fire, Leschak recounts his journey from a life preparing for the ministry to a career dedicated to fighting fires. In so doing, he breathes life into one of the most astounding and little-known disasters in American history and captures the sacred and mysterious pull of the fireground. From Father Pernin's struggle with an inferno so hot that not even the cold waters of the Peshtigo River guaranteed safety to the danger of today's frontline battles in America's wildlands, "Ghosts of the Fireground weaves seamlessly between these compelling adventures, offering a breathtaking look at the awesome power of fire and the courageous and noble pursuit that is wildland firefighting.

Lady of Hay

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Erskine, Barbara, PUBLISHER: Harper, "Two Women, Eight Hundred Years, and the Destiny They Share" "Barbara Erskine can make us feel the cold, smell the filth, and experience some of the fear of the power of evil men...The author's storytelling talent is undeniable." "-Times of London" With a story as mesmerizing as it is chilling, "Lady of Hay "explores how Jo, a journalist investigating hypnotic regression, plunges into the life of Matilda, Lady of Hay-who lived eight hundred years earlier. As she learns of Matilda's unhappy marriage, her troubled love for Richard de Clare, and the brutal treatment she received from King John, it seems that Jo's past and present are hopelessly entwined. Centuries later, a story of secret passion and unspeakable treachery is about to begin again-and she has no choice but to brave both lives if she wants to shake the iron grip of history. "So well researched and so well written that it is almost impossible to put down. The novel has everything that readers of racy fiction could ask for: beautiful characters, exotic settings, and passion...situations and characters that are so completely convincing that they come to life." "-Philadelphia Inquirer" "Told with hair-raising intensity, this is a gripping tale." "-Daily News" "Barbara Erskine is a superb storyteller." "-Los Angeles Daily News" "Fascinating, absorbing, original-all such praise comes easily when describing Barbara Erskine's "Lady of Hay." But perhaps the most suitable word is hypnotic." "-She" "What Readers are Saying" ""A classic in its own right."" ""An extraordinary story of time travel at its best."" ""The most unputdownable book I have ever come across."" Barbara Erskine is a historian and internationally bestselling author of "Lady of" "Hay "as well as "Time's Legacy," "Kingdom"" of Shadows," "Encounters," "Child of the Phoenix," "Midnight Is a Lonely Place," "House of Echoes," "Distant Voices," "Whispers in the Sand," "Hiding from the Light," and "On the Edge of Darkness." Protein Conformation - No. 161

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ciba Foundation / Caba Foundation, PUBLISHER: John Wiley & Sons, Protein Conformation Chairman: F.M. Richards One of the major unsolved problems in biology and chemistry is how the amino acid sequence of a protein determines its three-dimensional structure, yet this structure is fundamental to the functioning and mechanism of action of enzymes, channels and receptors. Since the pioneering modelling work of Pauling in the s and the X-ray structure determinations by Kendrew and Perutz in the s, much structural information on proteins has been amassed. Several hundred protein structures have now been solved by X-ray crystallography and, more recently, NMR spectroscopy has had a significant impact on the study of structures of small proteins in solution. In this book, contributions from experts in the fields of X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, molecular modelling and protein engineering provide insight into current views on the protein folding problem and point to avenues for future progress. The use of molecular dynamics simulations to provide information about protein structure, dynamics and stability, and about protein-- protein interactions, is discussed. Other topics focused on include enzyme catalysis, site-directed mutagenesis as a tool in studies of protein conformation and stability, and recent developments in multidimensional NMR methodology. An Appeal to Matter of Fact and Common Sense. or a Rational

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fletcher, John, PUBLISHER: Gale Ecco, Print Editions, The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
