Indigenous Resurgence in the Contemporary Caribbean:

Indigenous Resurgence in the Contemporary Caribbean:

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Forte, Maximilian C. / Forte, Maximilian Christian, PUBLISHER: Lang, Peter, Publishing Inc., Views of the modern Caribbean have been constructed by a fiction of the absent aboriginal. Yet, all across the Caribbean Basin, individuals and communities are reasserting their identities as indigenous peoples, from Carib communities in the Lesser Antilles, the Garifuna of Central America, and the Taino of the Greater Antilles, to members of the Caribbean diaspora. Far from extinction, or permanent marginality, the region is witnessing a resurgence of native identification and organization. This is the only volume to date that focuses concerted attention on a phenomenon that can no longer be ignored. Territories covered include Belize, Cuba, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, French Guiana, Guyana, St. Vincent, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Puerto Rican diaspora. Writing from a range of contemporary perspectives on indigenous presence, identities, the struggle for rights, relations with the nation-state, and globalization, fourteen scholars, including four indigenous representatives, contribute to this unique tesament to cultural survival. This book will be indispensable to students of Caribbean history and anthropology, indigenous studies, ethnicity, and globalization.

Queer Latinidad: Identity Practices, Discursive Spaces

Queer Latinidad: Identity Practices, Discursive Spaces

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rodriguez, Juana Maria / El-Din, Morsi Saad / Mokhtar, Gamal, PUBLISHER: New York University Press, According to the census, Latinos/as have become the largest ethnic minority group in the United States. Images of Latinos and Latinas in mainstream news and in popular culture suggest a Latin Explosion at center stage, yet the topic of queer identity in relation to Latino/a America remains under examined. Juana MarA-a RodrA-guez attempts to rectify this dearth of scholarship in Queer Latinidad: Identity Practices, Discursive Spaces, by documenting the ways in which identities are transformed by encounters with language, the law, culture, and public policy. She identifies three key areas as the project's case studies: activism, primarily HIV prevention; immigration law; and cyberspace. In each, RodrA-guez theorizes the ways queer Latino/a identities are enabled or constrained, melding several theoretical and methodological approaches to argue that these sites are complex and dynamic social fields. As she moves the reader from one disciplinary location to the other, RodrA-guez reveals the seams of her own academic engagement with queer latinidad. This deftly crafted work represents a dynamic and innovative approach to the study of identity formation and representation, making a vital contribution to a new reformulation of gender and sexuality studies.

Muddied Waters: Race, Region, and Local History in Colombia,

Muddied Waters: Race, Region, and Local History in Colombia,

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Appelbaum, Nancy P. / Nancy P. Appelbaum / Appelbaum, PUBLISHER: Duke University Press, Colombia's western Coffee Region is renowned for the whiteness of its inhabitants, who are often described as respectable pioneer families who domesticated a wild frontier and planted coffee on the forested slopes of the Andes. Some local inhabitants, however, tell a different tale--of white migrants rapaciously usurping the lands of indigenous and black communities." Muddied Waters" examines both of these legends, showing how local communities, settlers, speculators, and politicians struggled over jurisdictional boundaries and the privatization of communal lands in the creation of the Coffee Region. Viewing the emergence of this region from the perspective of Riosucio, a multiracial town within it, Nancy P. Appelbaum reveals the contingent and contested nature of Colombia's racialized regional identities. Nineteenth- and twentieth-century Colombian elite intellectuals, Appelbaum contends, mapped race onto their mountainous topography by defining regions in racial terms. They privileged certain places and inhabitants as white and modern and denigrated others as racially inferior and backward. Inhabitants of Riosucio, however, elaborated local narratives about their mestizo and indigenous identities that contested the white mystique of the Coffee Region. Ongoing violent conflicts over land and politics, Appelbaum finds, continue to shape local debates over history and identity. Drawing on archival and published sources complemented by oral history, "Muddied Waters" vividly illustrates the relationship of mythmaking and racial inequality to regionalism and frontier colonization in postcolonial Latin America.

Stains on My Name-C

Stains on My Name-C

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Williams, Brackette F. / Brackette F. Williams / Williams, PUBLISHER: Duke University Press, Burdened with a heritage of both Spanish and British colonization and imperialism, Guyana is today caught between its colonial past, its efforts to achieve the consciousness of nationhood, and the need of its diverse subgroups to maintain their own identity. "Stains on My Name, War in My Veins" chronicles the complex struggles of the citizens of Guyana to form a unified national culture against the pulls of ethnic, religious, and class identities. Drawing on oral histories and a close study of daily life in rural Guyana, Brackette E. Williams examines how and why individuals and groups in their quest for recognition as a "nation" reproduce ethnic chauvinism, racial stereotyping, and religious bigotry. By placing her ethnographic study in a broader historical context, the author develops a theoretical understanding of the relations among various dimensions of personal identity in the process of nation building.

The Emergence of Jewish Artists in Nineteenth-Century Europe

The Emergence of Jewish Artists in Nineteenth-Century Europe

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Goodman, Susan Tumarkin / Cohen, Richard I. / Hyman, Paula E., PUBLISHER: Merrell, The emancipation of Jews in Europe during the nineteenth century meant that for the first time they could participate in areas of secular life -- including established art academies -- that had previously been closed to them by legal restrictions. Jewish artists took many complex routes to establish their careers. Some -- such as Camille Pissaro -- managed to distinguish themselves without making any reference to their Jewish heritage in their art. Others -- such as Simeon Solomon and Maurycy Gottlieb -- wrestled with their identities as well to produce images of Jewish experience. The pogroms that began in the late nineteenth century brought home to Jews the problematic relationship of minority groups to majority cultures, and artists such as Maurycy Minkowski and Samuel Hirszenberg confronted the horror of the deaths of thousands of Jews in powerful images of destruction and despair. Comprehensively illustrated in color throughout, Painting in Nineteenth-Century Europe explores for the first time every aspect of the role of Jewish artists within nineteenth-century European art.

Sociology Now: The Essentials

Sociology Now: The Essentials

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kimmel, Michael S. / Aronson, Amy, PUBLISHER: Prentice Hall, "Sociology Now"" The Essentials" reflects the discipline today and explores the big questions about multiculturalism and globalization that sociologists ask. Sociology has always offered a way to make sense of the complex and sometimes contradictory forces that shape our social lives in any era. As "Sociology Now" explains sociology as both a body of knowledge and a "way of seeing," it shows how two such forces in particular have come to preoccupy sociologists and influence the way they look at the events and experiences of the early twenty first century: The first is globalization--the economic, political, cultural, and social interconnections among people and institutions all over the world. The second is multiculturalism--the recognition that race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, religion, and other statuses are sources of social inequality, but also the foundations of our identities. Michael Kimmel, a leading sociologist and gender researcher, and co-author Amy Aronson, a journalist and media scholar, address these questions head-on as they make a compelling case for the importance of sociology in the contemporary world.

Through Australian Eyes: Colonial Perceptions of Imperial

Through Australian Eyes: Colonial Perceptions of Imperial

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hassam, Andrew, PUBLISHER: Sussex Academic Press, In the last twenty-five years of the 19th century, around visitors from Australia landed in Britain. As members of the colonial elite, they sailed to the Old Country to experience their Britishness: they toured Westminster Abbey; they visited graves of parents; they threw snowballs at Christmas. Yet they were also aware of themselves as Australians. In , one Irishman wrote of his birthplace: 'The north of Ireland is a disgusting climate for an Australian who loves his blue skies and glorious sunshine.' Even London could disappoint: I have seen many curious things here not to be seen at home but it's not half the place I expected to see - hardly worth coming for.' Colonial Australians were British, but not of Britain, and their diaries and letters offer a distinctive insight into nineteenth-century Britain. Using unpublished diaries and letters, this book offers a unique and cross-disciplinary approach to Cultural History. It considers both British and Australian national identities as the products of cultural displacement.
