Imagining the Urban: Sanskrit and the City in Early India

Imagining the Urban: Sanskrit and the City in Early India

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kaul, Shonaleeka, PUBLISHER: Seagull Books, In "Imagining the Urban," Shonaleeka Kaul turns to Sanskrit literature to discover the characteristics—both physical and social—of ancient Indian cities. Kaul examines nearly a thousand years of Sanskrit "kāvyas "to see what India’s early historic cities were like as living, lived-in, entities—and discovers that the cities were vibrant and teeming with variety and life.   As much about Sanskrit literature as about urban spaces—insofar as that literature reveals significant aspects of the Indian urban past—" Imagining the Urban" shows that Sanskrit literature is a rich source for historical understanding. Advocating the  kāvyas as an important historical source, Kaul provides a fresh view of the early city, showing distinctive ways of thought and behavior that relate to tradition, morality, and authority.   With its provocative new questions about early Indian cities and ancient Indian texts, this book will be an essential read for scholars of urban history, Sanskrit writings, and South Asian antiquity.

Visions of God: Four Medieval Mystics and Their Writings

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Armstrong, Karen, PUBLISHER: Bantam, The mystics of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries were, writes Karen Armstrong, like "the astronauts of our own day. They broke into a new religion, blazed a new trail to God and to the depths of the self, a trail far from the beaten pilgrimage paths of Chaucer and Langland." Mysticism is a spiritual mystery shared in some form by all faiths; it has a supernatural quality that extends beyond the given boundaries of religious creed and may be experienced by any lay person. The thrilling intensity of a mystical experience, as represented in this volume by the writings of four mystics of the Middle Ages, can inspire other spiritual seekers with its insight into the limitless wonder of both human and divine experience. Dissatisfied by the strictures of dogma and a religion that failed to quench the human thirst for knowledge of a mystical order, these four mystics--Richard Rolle of Hampole, Walter Hilton, Dame Julian of Norwich, and the unknown author of "The Cloud Of Unknowing" --communicate an intense and passionate experience of faith rare in any time. Because of their unique beliefs and spiritual strength, their knowledge and writings have proved timeless, and in this beautiful volume show contemporary seekers important new insights into the nature of divine love.

Telegraph Messenger Boys: Labor, Communication and

Telegraph Messenger Boys: Labor, Communication and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Downey, Gregory John, PUBLISHER: Routledge, "Telegraph Messenger Boys" provides an entirely new perspective on the telegraph system, a communications network that revolutionized human perceptions of time and space. The book also tells a broader story of human interaction with technology, and social and cultural changes brought about by this relationship. Downey argues that the telegraph network was not merely an electromechanical system but a labor system as well. An army of uniformed boys worked for the telegraph companies, linking ordinary human labor to our first electronic information system. With a wealth of fascinating observations about the role of youth, labor and cities in creating the nation's first electronic grid, this study draws many useful parallels between this first "internetwork" and the one that is evolving now.

John Stuart Mill on Liberty and Control

John Stuart Mill on Liberty and Control

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hamburger, Joseph, PUBLISHER: Princeton University Press, John Stuart Mill is one of the hallowed figures of the liberal tradition, revered for his defense of liberal principles and expansive personal liberty. By examining Mill's arguments in "On Liberty in light of his other writings, however, Joseph Hamburger reveals a Mill very different from the "saint of rationalism" so central to liberal thought. He shows that Mill, far from being an advocate of a maximum degree of liberty, was an advocate of liberty "and control--indeed a degree of control ultimately incompatible with liberal ideals. Hamburger offers this powerful challenge to conventional scholarship by presenting Mill's views on liberty in the context of his ideas about, in particular, religion and historical development. The book draws on the whole range of Mill's philosophical writings and on his correspondence with, among others, Harriet Taylor Mill, Auguste Comte, and Alexander Bain to show that Mill's underlying goal was to replace the traditional religious basis of society with a form of secular religion that would rest on moral authority, individual restraint, and social control. Hamburger argues that Mill was not self-contradictory in thus championing both control and liberty. Rather, liberty and control worked together in Mill's thought as part of a balanced, coherent program of social and moral reform that was neither liberal nor authoritarian. Based on a lifetime's study of nineteenth-century political thought, this clearly written and forcefully argued book is a major reinterpretation of Mill's ideas and intellectual legacy.

War Horse

War Horse

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Morpurgo, Michael, PUBLISHER: Egmont Books (UK), Brimming with more than 140 dramatic images, this is the stunning, visual companion to Steven Spielberg's epic adventure, set in rural England and Europe, about a young man and his horse and their separate journeys through the battlefields of the First World War. One of the great stories of friendship and war, the successful novel "War Horse" not only inspired the award-winning stage play, but also inspired one of the great directors in film history to commit his talent, vision, and resources to make this extraordinary movie, which was shot in the countryside of England. "I first fell in love with the story of "War Horse" because I was moved by the relationship between a boy and an animal in Michael Morpurgo's novel and the screenplay by Richard Curtis and Lee Hall," writes Steven Spielberg in his foreword. "But, ultimately, I made it because of what the book and the screenplay say about courage. I t is about the courage of the horse Joey and what he endures to survive, and the courage of Albert in his attempt to find his best friend in a time of war. With every frame of this film, it was my hope to issue a call for courage in our daily lives. A call to 'be brave.'" Additional forewords by producer Kathleen Kennedy, novelist Michael Morpurgo, and co-screenwriter Richard Curtis reveal their feelings about the story and the process of moving it from page to screen. The main body of the book is divided into three sections: Part 1: "Joey's Journey"--A visual retelling, along with script excerpts and filmmakers' comments, of the journey taken by Joey, the horse trained by his beloved Albert, from the striking verdant countryside of Dartmoor, Devon, to training in the British cavalry, to trench warfare in France. Part 2: "The Making of War Horse"--An insider's glimpse of the movie-making process highlighted with fascinating insights from the international cast and the crew about the casting, locations, costumes, horse training, and much more. Part 3: "The History of War Horses"--An illuminating section on the role of horses in battle, illustrated with iconic images from history, vivid drawings, paintings and photographs. This beautiful book is a testament to what can be done when people become impassioned about a goal. As producer Kathleen Kennedy expresses in her foreword: ""War Horse" was one of those unusual productions that comes together in an incredibly short time, and for all the right reasons. Everyone involved understood the film's potential, the richness of the characters, the depth of emotion, and the strength of the story's message."

TEN IN THE MORNING presents an evocative grouping of reader responses. This tandem collection presents Willian Corbett's poems as a response to American artist Gerald Coble's collage, which, itself, comprises responses to writings by Proust, Whitman, Melville, Dickinson, and Thoreau, and to the actress Ava Gardner. Together, these responses remind readers of the possibility of personal readings of public figures. As Corbett writes in his introduction, "Proust, Whitman, Melville, Dickinson, and Thoreau sit firmly in the Western world's pantheon of writers." Perhaps, they sit so far above us that it is easy to forget that those of us who love their work have a personal relationship to it. An Anthology of Pre-Raphaelite Writings

An Anthology of Pre-Raphaelite Writings

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hares-Stryker, Carolyn, PUBLISHER: New York University Press, Here, for the first time, is a panoramic overview of the most resonant work of the Pre-Raphaelite era in one handy volume. Combining well-known works with previously neglected materials, this ambitious anthology includes writing and art by such figures as the Rosettis, William Morris, John Ruskin, George Meredith, and Algernon Charles Swinburne. Organized chronologically, the book enables the reader to trace the most prominent artists and writers within each decade, revealing how their influence alternatively increased and waned over time and further how their work was received by Victorian critics, by turn friendly, satirical, and hostile. Replete with paintings, first-hand accounts of evens and personalities, and the Pre-Raphaelites' own reflections, in their diaries and letters, on this fertile era, the volume serves as a lyrical recreation of one of the most explosively productive moments in Western cultural history. Carolyn Hares-Stryker's introduction addresses the principles and origins of the movement, describing the social and political events that shaped the Pre-Raphaelites and the themes to which they returned again and again: social reform, religion, and its role in contemporary life, the allure of the past, and the fragility of utopia.
