Human Liberty and Freedom of Speech

Human Liberty and Freedom of Speech

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Baker, C. Edwin, PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press, USA, Although an inchoate liberty theory of freedom of speech has deep roots in Supreme Court decisions and political history, it has been overshadowed in judicial decisions and scholarly commentary by the marketplace of ideas theory. In this book, Baker critiques the assumptions required by the marketplace of ideas theory and develops the liberty theory, showing its philosophical soundness, persuasiveness, and ability to protect free speech. He argues that First Amendment liberty rights (as well as Fourteenth Amendment equality rights) required by political or moral theory are central to the possibility of progressive change. Problem areas are examined, including the question of whether individual political and civil rights can in principle be distinguished from property rights, freedom of the press, and the use of public spaces for expressive purposes.

Silence and Freedom

Silence and Freedom

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Seidman, Louis Michael, PUBLISHER: Stanford University Press, "You have the right to remain silent." These words, drawn from the Supreme Court's famous decision in "Miranda v. Arizona," have had a tremendous impact on the public imagination. But what a strange right this is. Of all the activities that are especially worthy of protection, that define us as human beings, foster human potential, and symbolize human ambition, why privilege silence? This thoughtful and iconoclastic book argues that silence can be an expression of freedom. A defiant silence demonstrates determination, courage, and will. Martyrs from a variety of faith traditions have given up their lives rather than renounce their god. During the Vietnam era, thousands of anonymous draft resisters refused to take the military oath that was a prelude to participating in what they believed was an immoral war. These silences speak to us. They are a manifestation of connection, commitment, and meaning. This link between silence and freedom is apparent in a variety of different contexts, which Seidman examines individually, including silence and apology, silence and self-incrimination, silence and interrogation, silence and torture, and silence and death. In discussing the problem of apology, for example, the author argues that although apology plays a crucial role in maintaining the illusion of human connection, the right to not apologize is equally crucial. Similarly, prohibition against torture--so prominent in national debate since the events of Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib--is best understood as a right to silence, essential in preserving the distinction between mind and body on which human freedom depends. Flaubert and the Gift of Speech: Dialogue and Discourse in

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Haig, Stirling / Sheringham, Michael, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, This is the first book-length study of Flaubert's use of dialogue, an important but neglected component of his fictional texts. Professor Haig's starting point is Sartre's observation that 'Flaubert does not believe that we speak: we are spoken'. Dialogue in Flaubert does not attempt to represent an individual style but to circumscribe a larger phenomenon of language. Speech defines man both in the sense that it describes him as a set of human characteristics, and inscribes him within a system of social values. The author explores the development of Flaubert's use of dialogue in Madame Bovary, L'Education Sentimentale (both versions), and Bouvard et Pecuchet.

Logic and Information

Logic and Information

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Devlin, Keith J., PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, In this provocative and ground-breaking book, Keith Devlin argues that in order to obtain a deeper understanding of the nature of intelligence and knowledge acquisition, we must broaden our concept of logic. Classical logic, beginning with the work of Aristotle, has developed into a powerful and rigorous mathematical theory with many applications in mathematics and computer science, but it has proved woefully inadequate in the search for artificial intelligence. The new kind of logic, also mathematically based, outlined by Professor Devlin is the culmination of collaborative research among some of the world's leading logicians, philosophers, linguists, psychologists, and computer scientists. It introduces the concepts of infon, a quantum of information, and situations, a dynamical generalization of sets, and is capable of handlng the issues involved in human communication, thought, speech, and machine information processing.

The Price of Freedom Denied: Religious Persecution and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Grim, Brian J. / Finke, Roger, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, The Price of Freedom Denied shows that, contrary to popular opinion, ensuring religious freedom for all reduces violent religious persecution and conflict. Others have suggested that restrictions on religion are necessary to maintain order or preserve a peaceful religious homogeneity. Brian J. Grim and Roger Finke show that restricting religious freedoms is associated with higher levels of violent persecution. Relying on a new source of coded data for nearly 200 countries and case studies of six countries, the book offers a global profile of religious freedom and religious persecution. Grim and Finke report that persecution is evident in all regions and is standard fare for many. They also find that religious freedoms are routinely denied and that government and the society at large serve to restrict these freedoms. They conclude that the price of freedom denied is high indeed.

A Black Way of Seeing: From "Liberty" to Freedom

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Robeson, Paul, Jr., PUBLISHER: Seven Stories Press, " C]ontinues the elder Robeson's tradition of speaking out thoughtfully and frankly, and sketches a vision of American history where Black Americans, from slavery forward, have been forced to live a 'separate reality' from white Americans."-Publishers Weekly "The language of the Declaration of Independence could not have used the word freedom without directly confronting the issue of slavery as the ultimate denial of liberty, " writes black American writer Paul Robeson Jr. in the opening pages of this powerful and forward-looking indictment of contemporary American politics. Thereafter, Robeson writes, "liberty meant the privileges to which the elite minority was entitled." And as for freedom, we are still waiting for it. In the tradition of James Baldwin's Notes of a Native Son, Robeson's A Black Way of Seeing melds history and analysis in a sweeping panorama, scathing in its understanding of why black empowerment has failed and prescient in its articulation of what it will take for black Americans to finally cross over to the status of fully empowered citizens and what the ramifications of this change can be for the country as a whole. Paul Robeson Jr. is the author of Paul Robeson, Jr. Speaks to America: The Politics of Multiculturalism and The Undiscovered Paul Robeson: An Artist's Journey. An esteemed cultural critic, he has lectured across the United States and has appeared on radio and television programs around the globe. The Genesis of Ethics: On the Authority of God as the Origin

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Reed, Esther D., PUBLISHER: Pilgrim Press, The Genesis of Ethics soundly addresses the controversial concept of God's authority and reframes the concept as separate from authoritarianism. Esther D. Reed views ethics as the practical expression of divine-human reciprocity -- not as an isolated part of Christian life. "God's authority is not of a controlling or hegemonic kind, but of the dialogic, answerable kind, which draws human persons into relationship, " writes Reed. Reed proclaims that God's Word calls us to life, and the way we answer with our lives is the embodiment of Christian ethics and moral theology. The book presents and expounds upon a critical question -- How is the church to exercise authority in ways that promote the growth of personal freedom in Christ while preventing its teaching authority from becoming authoritarian?
