Gender and the Politics of Social Reform in France,

Gender and the Politics of Social Reform in France,

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Accampo, Elinor Ann / Stewart, Mary Lynn / Fuchs, Rachel Ginnis, PUBLISHER: Johns Hopkins University Press, Traditional histories of the French Third Republic often overlook the extent to which concerns about the place of women and the health of the family influenced the course of government policy, particularly the direction of welfare reform. Combining the approaches of social and political history, Gender and the Politics of Social Reform in France, offers a new perspective on women's lives in the Third Republic -- and on the emergence of the welfare state in general -- by looking at the attitudes, actions, and policies of the men who held political power. Addressing themes in the newly invigorated field of welfare-state history, contributors to this volume offer evidence that social reform in France began far earlier than is usually supposed and was a response by republican politicians and social activists to a declining population growth rate. As this demographic crisis inspired efforts to improve maternal and child health and increase the birth rate, motherhood was redefined as a public mission deserving of public support. Even though the eventual reforms resulted in greater recognition of women's role in the proper functioning of society and provided for programs beneficial to infants, the legislation enacted by the men in power was decidedly patriarchal in its scope, treating women as children rather than equals. Contributors are Elinor Accampo, Linda L. Clark, Rachel G. Fuchs, Theresa McBride, Mary Lynn Stewart, and Judith F. Stone. "This important and timely collection of essays is a valuable contribution to this reinvigorated scholarly field. The history of the welfare state has for too long been in the suffocating grip of specialists in institutional historywith no vision of the wider historical setting, or has been regarded as an addendum to the history of labor organization and revolutionary socialism. This volume argues clearly and persuasively for a new orientation." -- Robert Nye, Oregon State University

The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Palmer, Parker J., PUBLISHER: Jossey-Bass, "This book is for teachers who have good days and bad -- and whose bad days bring the suffering that comes only from something one loves. It is for teachers who refuse to harden their hearts, because they love learners, learning, and the teaching life." -- Parker J. Palmer from the Introduction] For many years, Parker Palmer has worked on behalf of teachers and others who choose their vocations for reasons of the heart but may lose heart because of the troubled, sometimes toxic systems in which they work. Hundreds of thousands of readers have benefited from his approach in THE COURAGE TO TEACH, which takes teachers on an inner journey toward reconnecting with themselves, their students, their colleagues, and their vocations, and reclaiming their passion for one of the most challenging and important of human endeavors. This book builds on a simple premise: good teaching cannot be reduced to technique but is rooted in the identity and integrity of the teacher. Good teaching takes myriad forms but good teachers share one trait: they are authentically present in the classroom, in community with their students and their subject. They possess "a capacity for connectedness" and are able to weave a complex web of connections between themselves, their subjects, and their students, helping their students weave a world for themselves. The connections made by good teachers are held not in their methods but in their hearts -- the place where intellect, emotion, spirit, and will converge in the human self -- supported by the community that emerges among us when we choose to live authentic lives. BONUS: Includes an audio CD featuring a 45-minute conversation between Parker Palmer and his colleagues, Marcy Jackson and Estrus Tucker from the Center for Courage & Renewal. They reflect on what they have learned from working with thousands of teachers in their "Courage to Teach" program (www.CourageRenewal.org)and with others who yearn for greater integrity in their professional lives.

The first workshop was organized by IFIP Working Group 11.1, which is itself dedicated to Information Security Management, i.e., not only to the practical implementation of new security technology issued from recent research and development, but also and mostly to the improvement of security practice in all organizations, from multinational corporations to small enterprises. Methods and techniques are developed to increase personal awareness and education in security, analyze and manage risks, identify security policies, evaluate and certify products, processes and systems. The second workshop was organized by IFIP Working Group 11.8, dedicated to Information Security Education. This year, the workshop was aimed at developing a first draft of an international doctorate program allowing a specialization in IT Security. The draft is based upon selected papers from individuals or groups (from academic, military and government organizations), and discussions at the workshop. This draft will be further refined and eventually published as an IFIP Report. Finally, the last workshop was organized by IFIP Working Group 11.4 on Network Security. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together privacy and anonymity experts from around the world to discuss recent advances and new perspectives on these topics that are increasingly important aspectsin electronic services, especially in advanced distributed applications, such as m-commerce, agent-based systems, P2P, etc. The carefully selected papers gathered in this volume show the richness of the information security domain, as well as the liveliness of the working groups cooperating in the IFIP Technical Committee 11 on Security and Protection in Information Processing Systems. Information Security Management, Education and Privacy is essential reading for scholars, researchers, and practitioners interested in keeping pace with the ever-growing field of information security.

Classism and Feminist Therapy

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Hill Ed D., Marcia / Hill, Marcia / Rothblum, Esther D., PUBLISHER: Routledge, Classism and Feminist Therapy: Counting Costs makes therapists more aware of their own class biases which assists them in providing more effective treatment that is sensitive to women's backgrounds. By helping therapists face important issues when their profession intersects with the values and experiences of working-class women, Classism and Feminist Therapy challenges the lack of attention given to issues of class in psychotherapy and serves as a step toward open conversation about the topic.Calling attention to the sociopolitical nature of therapy, contributors define some ways in which current therapeutic practices can become oppressive when class differences between client and therapist are ignored. In Classism and Feminist Therapy, therapists gain valuable insight about how class matters are played out in therapy. These insights are combined with guidelines as to how to engage in a less class-biased form of psychotherapy. To this end, contributors discuss: class-related biases and assumptions commonly held by therapists how to make psychotherapy more responsive to the needs of working-class and poor women the intersection of class, race, and gender and how this applies to therapy strengths and challenges for working-class, poor, and economically privileged women class and gender in a political and sociological context social-psychological dynamics of internalized classism and pathways to healing and self-recoveryThis engaging book alerts therapists to the failures and inadequacies of current approaches to class as an issue in psychological theory and psychotherapy. It discusses how the issue of class has been overshadowed by the assumptions that individuals and society make about it: that people are the class they deserve to be; that class is correlated with how hard one works or how smart one is; and that class is primarily a matter of income or owned assets rather than of access (both psychologically and practically) to resources. All therapists--psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors--of intermediate to advanced levels of knowledge and practice will find information in Classism and Feminist Therapy invaluable for confronting issues of class in their professional and personal interactions.

Contemporary Latina/o Theater: Wrighting Ethnicity

Contemporary Latina/o Theater: Wrighting Ethnicity

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rossini, Jon D., PUBLISHER: Southern Illinois University Press, In "Contemporary Latina/o Theater," Jon D. Rossini explores the complex relationship between theater and the creation of ethnicity in an unprecedented examination of six Latina/o playwrights and their works: Miguel Pinero, Luis Valdez, Guillermo Reyes, Octavio Solis, Jose Rivera, and Cherrie Moraga. Rossini exposes how these writers use the genre as a tool to reveal and transform existing preconceptions about their culture. Through "wrighting"--the triplicate process of writing plays, righting misconceptions about ethnic identity, and creating an entirely new way of understanding Latina/o culture--these playwrights directly intervene in current conversations regarding ethnic identity, providing the tools for audiences to reexplore their previously held perspectives outside the theater.Examining these writers and their works in both cultural and historical contexts, Rossini reveals how playwrights use the liminal space of the stage--an area on the thresholds of both theory and reality--to "wright" new insights into Latina/o identity. They use the limits of the theater itself to offer practical explorations of issues that could otherwise be discussed only in highly theoretical terms.Rossini traces playwrights' methods as they address some of the most challenging issues facing contemporary Latinas/os in America: from the struggles for ethnic solidarity and the dangers of a community based in fear, to stereotypes of Latino masculinity and the problematic fusion of ethnicity and politics. Rossini discusses the looming specter of the border in theater, both as a conceptual device and as a literal reality--a crucial subject for modern Latinas/os, given recent legislation and other actions.Throughout, the author draws intriguing comparisons to the cultural limbo in which many Latinas/os find themselves today. An indispensable volume for anyone interested in drama and ethnic studies, "Contemporary Latina/o Theater" underscores the power of theatricality in exploring and rethinking ethnicity. Rossini provides the most in-depth analysis of these plays to date, offering a groundbreaking look at the ability of playwrights to correct misconceptions and create fresh perspectives on diversity, culture, and identity in Latina/o America.

The Wolves at Evelyn: Journeys Through a Dark Century

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rhenisch, Harold, PUBLISHER: Brindle & Glass, At once a memoir, a work of philosophy, a story of European immigration to Canada's dark places of the earth, and an exploration of the roots and effects of colonialism, "The Wolves At Evelyn: Journeys Through a Dark Century" is a stylistic and rhetorical tour de force from one of Canada's master prose stylists.Dissident communists fleeing s Germany, Harold Rhenisch's grandparents imagined that British Columbia's Interior was the end of the earth-a new world where they could fulfil their dreams of the land, freed from tyrrany and from history itself. A generation later, in the wake of World War II, his father arrived, carrying many of the same ideas with him. What they found instead was a colonial culture as highly developed as Doris Lessing's Rhodesia.Rhenisch grew up at the nexus of these cultures: a Germany where Nazism simultaneously did and did not happen, a Canada in the process of shedding British colonialism for American, and a land-the Interior-that had no point of contact with any of them. With remarkable range and vision, Rhenisch turns in a bravura performance, sifting through the ashes of personal experience, family anecdotes, literature, art, history, and the land itself for clues to a great untold story, Rhenisch assembles a collage of images and ideas that becomes a whole much greater than the sum of its parts. The hidden history of a forgotten outpost of the Empire is laid open, shattering dearly held myths and exposing buried skeletons. How was the sunny, carefree Okanagan Valley fruit culture built on the back of King Leopold's Congolese slave trade? How does Margaret Atwood's garrison theory of literature reflect on Rhenisch family's hidden Nazi past? How did the Hudson's Bay Company Blanket act as both a cherished kitsch object for generations of Canadians and a tool of genocide? Alternating between light and darkness, great humour and sharp indignation, this is a disturbing, thought-provoking and important work from a masterful writer and cultural analyst.

Poetry of Lucy Maud Montgomery

Poetry of Lucy Maud Montgomery

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: McCabe, Kevin / Montgomery, Lucy Maud / Ferns, John, PUBLISHER: Fitzhenry & Whiteside, The poems in this collection by Lucy Maud Montgomery were written to reach the readers she thought of as "kindred spirits" - those thousands of people who then, as now, would be as deeply moved as she was by beauty in nature and in spirit. She felt herself drenched with beauty. It was an emotion that evolves heart-deep recognition in readers who will find an echo of their own yearnings and hungers for emotional outlet. Maud Montgomery was well aware that greatness as a poet was beyond her reach, but her verses were capable of putting into words what ordinary people felt and often could not explain. They express the sense of awe and delight arising from the simple human experiences of all that is lovely in the world. "I've written one real poem out of my heart," she confided to a friend in a week when she had sent off several verses she knew to be pot-boilers. But even these held a small kernel of thought, of appreciation, of gratitude for the gift of natural beauty. The poems in this collection will reach as deeply into the heart of today's readers as they did in those who first read them half a century ago. Critics are now finding new insights and much genuine ability in Montgomery's poetry, but the poems remain poems for people. She wrote for people who hunger for a way to give voice to their deepest thoughts and emotions. She wrote as an artist paints, in vivid scenes with vivid colours. Her verses are clearly defined gem-like vignettes depicting familiar scenes beloved by all the friends of the earth. She writes of clouds and sky, the clash and thunder of waves on a seashore, the scents of garden and woodland, the kinship of humanity with whatever gods there be. The qualities of simplicity and earnestness are not to be spurned. While ordinary people can respond to these eternal truths, Montgomery's poems will continue to be read and treasured.

The Watson Dynasty: The Fiery Reign and Troubled Legacy of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Tedlow, Richard S., PUBLISHER: HarperBusiness, For an extraordinary fifty-seven-year period, one of the nation's largest and fastest-growing companies was run by two men who were flesh and blood. The chief executives of the International Business Machines Corporation from until were Thomas J. Watson and Thomas J. Watson, father and son. That great corporation bears the imprint of both men -- their ambitions and their strengths -- but it also bears the consequences of a family that was in near-constant conflict. Sometimes wrong but never in doubt, both Watsons had clear -- and farsighted -- visions of what their company could become. They also had volcanic tempers. Their fights with each other combined with their commitment to leadership and excellence made IBM one of the most rewarding, yet gut-clutching firms to work for in the history of American business. We are accustomed to describing professional behavior as if men and women leave their emotions and vulnerabilities at home each day. In the case of the Watsons, filial and sibling strife could not be excluded from the office. In closely studying the desires and frustrations of the Watson family, eminent historian Richard S. Tedlow has produced something more than a family portrait or a company history. He has raised the nearly forbidden issue of the role of emotion in corporate life. This book explores the interplay between the person- alities of these two extraordinary men and the firm they created. Both Watsons had deeply held beliefs about what a corporation is and should be. These ideas helped make "Big Blue" the bluest of blue-chip stocks during the Watsons' tenure. These very beliefs, however, also sowed the seeds for IBM's disasters in the lates and early s, when the company had lost sight of the original meaning behind many of the practices each man put into place. Tracing the family's idiosyncratic ability to cope with each other's weaknesses but not their strengths, "The Watson Dynasty is a book for every person who ever went to work but didn't want to check his personality at the door.

Before Roe: Abortion Policy in the States

Before Roe: Abortion Policy in the States

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Nossiff, Rosemary, PUBLISHER: Temple University Press, Few issues in contemporary U.S. politics have remained on the public agenda so long and so divisively as abortion policy. The landmark Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade, which held that laws prohibiting first trimester abortions were illegal because they violated a woman's right to privacy, still generates heated controversy today, a quarter of a century after it was made. The seeds of that controversy were sown in the seven years immediately preceding Roe, when state legislatures tried to reconcile religious opposition to abortion and individuals' civil liberties. In this groundbreaking book, Rosemary Nossiff examines the forces that shaped abortion policy during those years, and the ways in which states responded to them. To provide in-depth analysis while still looking broadly at the picture, she studies New York, which passed the most permissive abortion bill in the country, and Pennsylvania, which passed one of the most restrictive. That these two states, which share similar demographic, political, and economic characteristics, should reach two such different outcomes provides a perfect case study for observing political dynamics at the state level. Nossiff examines the medical, religious, and legal discourses employed on both sides of the debate, as well as the role played by feminist discourse. She looks at the role of the political parties in the campaigns, as well as such interest groups as the National Council of Catholic Bishops, the Clergy Consultation Service, the National Organization for Women, and the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws. In addition, she analyzes the strategies used by both sides, as well as partisan and institutionaldevelopments that facilitated success or failure. Finally, in the Epilogue, she assesses the Roe decision and its aftermath, including an analysis of the pro-life movement in Pennsylvania. As the author remarks, "Without question people's positions on abortion are shaped by a myriad of social, moral, and economic factors. But ultimately abortion policy is shaped in the political arena. This book examines how one of the most intimate decisions a woman makes, whether to continue or terminate a pregnancy, has become one of the most politicized issues in contemporary American politics".

Thomas Kuhn: A Philosophical History for Our Times

Thomas Kuhn: A Philosophical History for Our Times

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fuller, Steve, PUBLISHER: University of Chicago Press, Thomas Kuhn's "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" is one of the best known and most influential books of the twentieth century. Whether they adore or revile him, critics and fans alike have tended to agree on one thing: Kuhn's ideas were revolutionary. But were they? Steve Fuller argues that Kuhn actually held a profoundly conservative view of science and how one ought to study its history. Early on, Kuhn came under the influence of Harvard President James Bryant Conant (to whom "Structure" is dedicated), who had developed an educational program intended to help deflect Cold War unease over science's uncertain future by focusing on its illustrious past. Fuller argues that this rhetoric made its way into "Structure," which Fuller sees as preserving and reinforcing the old view that science really is just a steady accumulation of truths about the world (once "paradigm shifts" are resolved). Fuller suggests that Kuhn, deliberately or not, shared the tendency in Western culture to conceal possible negative effects of new knowledge from the general public. Because it insists on a difference between a history of science for scientists and one suited to historians, Fuller charges that "Structure" created the awkward divide that has led directly to the "Science Wars" and has stifled much innovative research. In conclusion, Fuller offers a way forward that rejects Kuhn's fixation on paradigms in favor of a conception of science as a social movement designed to empower society's traditionally disenfranchised elements. Certain to be controversial, "Thomas Kuhn" must be read by anyone who has adopted, challenged, or otherwise engaged with "The Structure of ScientificRevolutions." "Structure will never look quite the same again after Fuller. In that sense, he has achieved one of the main aims of his ambitious and impressively executed project."--Jon Turney, "Times Higher Education Supplement" "Philosophies like Kuhn's narrow the possible futures of inquiry by politically methodizing and taming them. More republican philosophies will leave the future open. Mr. Fuller has amply succeeded in his program of distinguishing the one from the other."--William R. The engrossing chronicle of the prisoners' ordeal is told in their own words--from their capture in , through six months of interrogation, torture, and isolation, to their movement to a common room. A watershed event, their transfer to shared living quarters enabled them to forge a community and an almost utopian social system. They held weekly meetings, kept a common diary, started study classes, and, among other projects, translated "The Hobbit" into Hebrew. The narrative goes on to describe the re-entry of the POWs into family and social roles upon their release and return to Israel in . An exploration of the personal impact of the experience on the wives of the married prisoners introduces the women's own stories of separation and reunion. Some of them had suddenly found themselves, in effect, single mothers--yet their husbands were alive. Their husbands found stronger, more independent women in place of the traditional ones they had left behind. One of the women remarks, I thought my husband] had been angry at me, in part unconsciously, for being so strong and competent in his absence...I had managed, well, almost effortlessly. This dramatic and moving account illustrates the resilience of the human spirit in the face of the most dehumanizing circumstances.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Light, Murray B. / Buffett, Warren E., PUBLISHER: Prometheus Books, In , a twenty-three-year-old entrepreneur named Edward H. Butler arrived in Buffalo, New York, to found a newspaper eventually called "The Buffalo Evening News. Under Butler's aegis the "News became one of the most successful newspapers in America, growing along with the thriving city at the end of the Erie Canal, which was expanding rapidly as immigrants poured in and America urbanized. About a century later, in , Warren E. Buffett, recognizing the value of the paper, bought "The Buffalo Evening News, and to this day, despite competition from large media conglomerates, "The Buffalo News (as it is now called) remains a successful independent publication. There is no better person to tell the story of the "News than Murray B. Light, who held senior editorial positions at the paper for over 30 years. Beginning with the founding of the newspaper by Butler, Light provides a wealth of historical information and many in-depth, behind-the-scenes profiles of key persons who influenced, the course of the paper. Chief among these is founder Edward H. Butler, a dynamo of energy, whose enthusiasm, innovation, and high standards are still felt to this day. His son, Edward Butler Jr., also played an important role, extending the reach of the "News into radio and television. Almost as influential as the senior Butler was Alfred H. Kirchhofer, whose workaholic personality, staunch Republican Party connections, and active involvement in the Buffalo community became legendary. Regarding the current owner, Warren Buffett, Light has many interesting insights into his famous low-key, hands-off style of management. He assumed ownership of the "News at a critical time, bolstering its financialstrength while encouraging complete editorial independence. Light also devotes a chapter to current publisher Stanford Lipsey, a longtime associate of Buffett, highlighting his leadership in the wake of the bitter court dispute with the "Courier Express. Along the way Light offers interesting comments on newspaper trends and on many longtime and widely read reporters and columnists, such as Ray Hill, Bob Curran, Lee Coppola, Jeff Simon, Alan Pergament, Donn Esmonde, Janice Okun, Larry Felser, and many others. This detailed memoir of the persons and events that had a formative influence on a major independent regional newspaper will interest both newspaper professionals and readers in the Western New York community, as well as many outside the area.

He is perceived through his best-known book, The Wealth of Nations, as the founder of economics as a science, and his ideas about the free market and the role of the state (in relation to it) continue to influence modern economic thought. Yet Smith achieved even more as a man of letters, as a moralist, historian, and critic. The Life of Adam Smith, the first full-scale biography of Smith in a hundred years, is a superb account of Smith's life and work, encompassing a career that spanned some of the defining moments in world history, including the American and French Revolutions. Here author Ian Simpson Ross examines Smith's family life, education, career, intellectual circle (including David Hume and Francois Quesnay), and his contemporaries (the likes of Immanuel Kant, Voltaire, and Thomas Jefferson), bringing to life this great thinker and author. Readers will meet Smith as a student at a lively Glasgow University and at a sleepy Oxford; a freelance lecturer delivering popular classes on rhetoric; an innovative university teacher ("by far the most useful, and therefore," Smith wrote, "by far the happiest and most honourable period of my life"); then a tutor travelling abroad with a Duke; an acclaimed political economist; a policy advisor to governments during and after the American Revolution; and finally, if paradoxically in view of his strongly held tenets, a Commissioner of Customs coping with free traders in the smuggling business. But it his impact as a writer that continues to set Adam Smith apart today. The Wealth of Nations, published in , as the British Parliament was deep in debate about the American colonies, continues to influence modern economic theory throughout the world. Ross sheds new light on this classic work and on its meaning for today. And he also paints a vivid portrait of Smith's personal life, revealing a man of singular generosity of spirit, who believed that with wit and logic and sensitivity to our feelings, we might aspire to virtue rather than wealth, and so become members of a truly civil society. Upon Adam Smith's death in , a friend wrote of him, "Happy are those who at the close of life can reflect that they have lived to a valuable purpose by contributing, as he did, to enlighten mankind, and to spread the blessings of peace and liberty and virtue." The Life of Adam Smith illuminates the world of a man whose legacy of thought concerns and affects us all.

Odd Apocalypse: An Odd Thomas Novel

Odd Apocalypse: An Odd Thomas Novel

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Koontz, Dean R., PUBLISHER: Bantam, "The stallion reared over me, silently slashing the air with the hooves of its forelegs, a creature of such immense power that I stumbled backward even though I knew that it was as immaterial as a dream...." " " The woman astride the ghostly mount reaches out desperately, the latest spirit to enlist the aid of Odd Thomas, the unassuming young fry cook whose gift--or curse--it is to see the shades of the restless dead, and to help them when he can. This mission of mercy will lead Odd through realms of darkness he has never before encountered, as he probes the long-held secrets of a sinister estate and those who inhabit it. ODD APOCALYPSE Once presided over by a flamboyant Hollywood mogul during the Roaring '20s, the magnificent West Coast property known as Roseland is now home to a reclusive billionaire financier and his faithful servants. And, at least for the moment, it's also a port in the storm for Odd Thomas and his traveling companion, the inscrutably charming Annamaria, the Lady of the Bell. In the wake of Odd's most recent clash with lethal adversaries, the opulent manor's comforts should be welcome. But there's far more to Roseland than meets even the extraordinary eye of Odd, who soon suspects it may be more hell than haven. A harrowing taste of Roseland's terrors convinces Odd that it's time to hit the road again. Still, the prescient Annamaria insists that they've been led there for a reason, and he's promised to do his best for the ghost on horseback. Just how deep and dreadful are the mysteries Roseland and her masters have kept for nearly a century? And what consequences await whoever is brave, or mad, enough to confront the most profound breed of evil? Odd only knows. Like his acclaimed creator, the irresistible Odd Thomas is in top-notch form--as he takes on what may well be the most terrifying challenge yet in his curious career. "This is Koontz working at his pinnacle, providing terrific entertainment that deals seriously with some of the deepest themes of human existence: the nature of evil, the grip of fate and the power of love."--"Publishers Weekly "(starred review), on "Odd Thomas" " " "Supernatural thrills with a side of laughs.""--The Denver Post, " on "Brother Odd" " " "The nice young fry cook with the occult powers is Koontz's most likable creation... candid, upright, amusing and sometimes withering.""--The New York Times"

Dead Man's Touch

Dead Man's Touch

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Ehrman, Kit, PUBLISHER: Poisoned Pen Press, What do you do when everything you've held to be true, when your entire life, in fact, turns out to be a lie? Do you run away? Start over? Create a new truth? This is the dilemma faced by what twenty-two-year old Stephen Cline. Bruised in body and psyche from his adventures in At Risk, Steve gets another blow in Dead Man's Touch, the sudden death of his estranged father in an automobile accident. At the funeral, Steve's disgruntled older brother calls him a bastard--and means it. Literally. Steve, he reveals, is the product of an affair. Confronting his socialite mother, Steve learns that his real father is a horse trainer, Christopher J. Kessler. Curiosity gets the best of Steve, who's on leave from his job at Foxdale stables, so he heads for the Maryland track where he can find Kessler. The trainer soon notices that Steve is shadowing him and accuses Steve of working for a group of men intent on pressuring him to throw select races in a lucrative race-fixing scam. When Kessler learns that he's a father and Steve is his son, he recruits Steve to work undercover at his training barn to thwart the fix by discovering who's been doping the most promising horses. As Steve settles in, he gets caught up in the unique lifestyle inherent to the backside. Everyone who works there lives and breathes it--the hopes and the dreams along with the shattering disappointments--until the work itself becomes a way of life. For a man recovering his health, and his courage after an earlier brush with the kind of toughs who can make a life with horses a nightmare, the backside is an inspiration. But it is not a life without peril -- some men are willing to do anything to get the righthorse under the wire first. Anything from threats to violence to murder. As Steve puts pressure on the bad guys, a young woman is found dead in a horse's stall, and Steve becomes the prime suspect in her murder. He must now discover the ringleader's identity to keep from being put in jail, or worse, in the ground. "The smart money could make the unusually likable protagonist a favorite in the Francis Stakes" said Kirkus Reviews of Steve Cline's first appearance in 's At Risk, the start of a promising career for him and for author Kit Ehrman. Publishers Weekly adds: "Both horse lovers and crime fans who've never stepped into a stirrup will relish Ehrman's riveting debut."

The Yale Younger Poets Anthology

The Yale Younger Poets Anthology

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bradley, George, PUBLISHER: Yale University Press, "An important and elegant history of American poetry -- how it has been written, received, and read over the course of the century. It is a fascinating survey of the shifting tides in this country's literary tastes". -- J. d. McClatchy "Like most editors the Yale series has had, Auden had no sooner taken the job than he began to worry about the amount of work involved.... He complained vigorously about the introduction requirement he had agreed to only a week before: 'Personally, I am very much against the critical estimate business and would like to see the policy changed. These introductions always sound awful, and the whole idea that a new poet should be introduced by an older one as if he were a debutante or a new face cream, deplorable and false.' The Press held its ground, though. If Benet and MacLeish could do it, so could the new editor. And so, over his objections, Auden was brought to doa task he would accomplish spectacularly well". -- from the Introduction In Yale University Press inaugurated the Yale Series of Younger Poets, designed to "afford a public medium for the work of young men and women who have not vet secured a wide public recognition". This anthology of the longest-running poetry series in the United States tells the story of American poetry in this century. At first a forum for a conservative taste in parochial college verse, the Younger Poets Series soon opened up to unconventional but profound young talents from across the country -- such as James Agee, Muriel Rukeyser, Margaret Walker, William Meredith, Adrienne Rich, John Ashbery John Hollander, James Tate, Carolyn Forche, and Robert Hass. This anthology includes poems from the first book by eachof the 92 winners of the annual Younger Poets contest. The selections are accompanied by an introduction by George Bradley, the winner of the contest. Bradley charts the course of the series under the aegis of such contest judges as Stephen Vincent Benet, W. H. Auden, and James Merrill, lacing his narrative with anecdotes about the judges and winners. He also establishes the series' vital role in the development of American poetry and American publishing. The anthology is divided into two sections: "The Early Years", which briefly presents the first 31 winners of the contest, and "The Modern Series", which gives ample room to display the early work of some of America's finest poets. All poets are introduced by a biographical headnote, and in the second section Bradley has added a brief commentary directing the reader to the salient features of each poet's work.
