Ottenuto l'incarico di professore ordinario presso l'Università di Salerno dal al , De Felice fondò nel la rivista Storia Contemporanea edita da Il Mulino. Nel si trasferì presso l'Università La Sapienza di Roma, ove insegnò Storia dei partiti politici alla facoltà di Lettere e poi, dal , presso quella di Scienze politiche; infine, nel , passò a occupare la cattedra di Storia contemporanea. Ha fatto parte del consiglio editoriale del Journal of Contemporary History.
