The author argues that, although by the s labor relations had reached a stage that foreshadowed postwar development, it was not until the s and s that something closely akin to the contemporary pattern emerged. The central theme is that the ideas and actions of the workers, whether unionized or not, played a vital role in the shaping of the system. This is the only study in the West that demonstrates how Japanese workers sought to change and to some extent succeeded in changing the structure of factory life. Managerial innovations and the efforts of state bureaucrats to control social change are also examined. The book is based on extensive archival research and interviewing in Japan, including the use of numerous labor-union publications and the holdings of the prewar elite's principal organization for the study of social issues, the Kyochokai, both collections having only recently been catalogued and opened to scholars. This is an intensive look at past developments that underlie labor relations in today's Japanese industrial plants.

Ha scritto anche con gli pseudonimi George Whitley, George Whitely, Andrew Dunstan e S.H.M. È famoso nel mondo della fantascienza per aver creato la serie del comandante Grimes (famoso anche come l'Horatio Hornblower dello spazio) ambientata in una futuristica frontiera della bolla di espansione nello spazio da parte della razza umana. Nato ad Aldershot, Inghilterra, Chandler ha navigato per tutto il mondo sui mezzi più disparati (dalle navi a vapore sino ai trasporti truppa). Nel emigrò in Australia dove proseguì nel comando delle navi, stavolta mercantili, sotto la bandiera australiana e neozelandese, fino al suo ritiro in pensione avvenuto nel . Fino alla sua morte, avvenuta nel , Chandler scrisse diversi romanzi e storie brevi, talvolta scrivendo sotto gli pseudonimi di George Whitley od Andrew Dunstan. Molti dei romanzi hanno un tema nautico trasposto verso le "navi dello spazio" del futuro. Ha pubblicato oltre 40 romanzi della fantascienza ed oltre 200 romanzi brevi. Come da titolo vendo vari libri gialli degli anni '80 e '90 in buone condizioni, tutti completi ed integri anche se data l'età potrebbero avere qualche piccolo danno come pagine un pò piegate, ingiallite o simili ma che non compromettono in alcun modo l'integrità dei libri stessi.
