MacArthur accepts the Japanese unconditional surrender, thus ending the war. The book chronicles Keehan's readjustment to civilian life as, and his subsequent life's mission: the honoring of Westport's sons and daughters that left the safety of the hearth and home to join the armed services to fight during World War II. However, Westport's World War II monument, called the Honor Roll, which was built during the war, is missing, a victim of both time and neglect. This portrayal of the s provides a sense of the illusive glories of the Boom Era. It is filled with characters based on people Wilson knew well or had observed, such as Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, and the Fitzgerald circle, and composers as varied as Cole Porter and Charles Ives. Written at a turning point in his career, before he left contemporary literature and radical politics to focus on history, travel, and his own past, this novel reveals Wilson's second thoughts about the s and his recognition of the aspirations and dilemmas of the artist in American society.
