Peasants and Slaves: The Rural Population of Roman Italy

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Launaro, Alessandro, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, The crisis of the Roman Republic and its transformation into an Empire have fascinated generations of scholars. It has long been assumed that a dramatic demographic decline of the rural free peasantry (which was supplanted by slaves) triggered the series of social and economic developments which eventually led to Rome's political crisis during the first century BC. This book contributes to a lively debate by exploring both the textual and the archaeological evidence and by tracing and reassessing the actual fate of the Italian rural free population between the Late Republic and the Early Empire. Data derived from a comparative analysis of twenty-seven archaeological surveys and about five thousand sites allow Dr Launaro to outline a radically new picture according to which episodes of local decline are placed within a much more generalised pattern of demographic growth. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cosgrove, Mark P., PUBLISHER: Kregel Academic & Professional, "Faith is not just meant for church on Sunday," contends Mark Cosgrove. "Faith and learning are interwoven with each other for the full functioning of the human mind." A book that details this interconnection between faith and learning, Foundations of Christian Thought encourages readers to view the Christian faith and worldview as relevant to everything they read, study, and consider. In part 1, Cosgrove explores the relationship between faith and learning and how an underlying worldview can influence one's beliefs. Part 2 describes and tests five major worldviews competing with Christian theism, including naturalism, secular humanism, atheistic existentialism, pantheism, and the New Age movement. The last part probes the Christian worldview in more detail by analyzing the challenges it faces and how it is lived out day-to-day. An educator on the college campus for thirty years, Cosgrove testifies to how well the Christian worldview relates with the current needs and ideas in American culture. Through Foundations of Christian Thought, high school and college students will begin to see how the Christian worldview is relevant to what they are studying in the classroom and the decisions they make. Readers in the workforce and elsewhere will learn to relate their faith to modern worldviews in our culture.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Calhoun, Daniel F. / Calhoun, PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, The book concerns the Soviet effort during the s to make contact with - and if possible revolutionize - the European labour movement, by first establishing a special relationship with the British Trades Union Congress. The author suggests the failure of this particular 'united front' effort was a major factor in the sectarianism and isolationism of the Communist movement from to , and thus had a significant affect on the rise of the Nazi party in Germany.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lardas, Mark / Shumate, Johnny / Spedaliere, Donato, PUBLISHER: Osprey Publishing (UK), On April Benjamin Grierson led a force of Union cavalrymen across enemy lines into the Confederate-held Tennessee in a bold diversionary raid. Over the next seventeen days, Grierson's horsemen caused havoc by destroying railroad lines, attacking outposts, burning military stores and fighting numerous small actions, before breaking back through the lines at Baton Rouge. The raid was a tremendous success, not only by virtue of the destruction it caused, but also because the Confederates were forced to divert thousands of troops away from the front lines during General Grant's critical Vicksburg offensive. This book tells the complete story of one of the most daring Union raids of the war.

The Bishop's Palace: Architecture and Authority in Medieval

The Bishop's Palace: Architecture and Authority in Medieval

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Miller, Maureen, PUBLISHER: Cornell University Press, This lavishly illustrated book looks at the art and architecture of episcopal palaces as expressions of power and ideology. Tracing the history of the bishop's residence in the urban centers of northern Italy over the Middle Ages, Maureen C. Miller asks why this once rudimentary and highly fortified structure called a domus became a complex and elegant "palace" (palatium) by the late twelfth century. Miller argues that the change reflects both the emergence of a distinct clerical culture and the attempts of bishops to maintain authority in public life. She relates both to the Gregorian reform movement, which set new standards for clerical deportment and at the same time undercut episcopal claims to secular power. As bishops lost temporal authority in their cities to emerging communal governments, they compensated architecturally and competed with the communes for visual and spatial dominance in the urban center. This rivalry left indelible marks on the layout and character of Italian cities. Moreover, Miller contends, this struggle for power had highly significant, but mixed, results for western Christianity. On the one hand, as bishops lost direct governing authority in their cities, they devised ways to retain status, influence, and power through cultural practices. This response to loss was highly creative. On the other hand, their loss of secular control led bishops to emphasize their spiritual powers and to use them to obtain temporal ends. The coercive use of spiritual authority contributed to the emergence of a "persecuting society" in the central Middle Ages.

Nature and Nurture During Infancy and Early Childhood

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Plomin, Robert / Defries, J. C. / Fulker, D. W., PUBLISHER: Cambridge University Press, In light of work by quantitative geneticists, the authors reconsider the interaction of heredity and environment in the development of individual differences during infancy and early childhood. Quantitative genetics offers a general theory of the development of individual differences that suggests novel concepts and research strategies: the idea that genetic influences operate in age-to-age change as well as in continuity, for example. Quantitative genetics also provides powerful methods to address questions of change and continuity which are helpfully introduced in this study. Longitudinal quantitative genetic research is essential to the understanding of developmental change and continuity. The largest and longes longitudinal adoption study is the Colorado Adoption Project, which has generated much of the rich data on the progress from infancy to early childhood on which the authors draw throughout the book.
