Lincoln's Speeches Reconsidered

Lincoln's Speeches Reconsidered

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Briggs, John Channing, PUBLISHER: Johns Hopkins University Press, Throughout the fractious years of the mid-nineteenth century, Abraham Lincoln's speeches imparted reason and guidance to a troubled nation. Lincoln's words were never universally praised. But they resonated with fellow legislators and the public, especially when he spoke on such volatile subjects as mob rule, temperance, the Mexican War, slavery and its expansion, and the justice of a war for freedom and union. In this close examination, John Channing Briggs reveals how the process of studying, writing, and delivering speeches helped Lincoln develop the ideas with which he would so profoundly change history. Briggs follows Lincoln's thought process through a careful chronological reading of his oratory, ranging from Lincoln's speech to the Springfield Lyceum to his second inaugural address. Recalling David Herbert Donald's celebrated revisionist essays (Lincoln Reconsidered, ), Briggs's study provides students of Lincoln with new insight into his words, intentions, and image.

Death's Deceiver: The Life of Joseph P. Machebeuf

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bridgers, Lynn, PUBLISHER: University of New Mexico Press, Joseph Machebeuf has been overshadowed for more than a century by his friend and fellow priest, Jean Baptiste Lamy. In this biography Machebeuf comes into his own, emerging as a major figure in the spread of European Catholicism through the American West. Although not physically robust, Machebeuf's nickname "Trompe la Mort" ("Death's Deceiver") reflected his optimistic nature and indomitable will. During his lifetime spent in Ohio, Santa Fe, and Denver, Machebeuf survived typhoid, cholera, dysentery, and malaria. Immortalized as Father Vaillant in Willa Cather's "Death Comes for the Archbishop," Machebeuf reminds us of the frequently overlooked French influence in New Mexico culture. Initially hated because of conflicts with local priests, Machebeuf soon developed a broad understanding and love of Hispanic culture. In his role as pastor he faced many challenges that resonate today--the friction of diverse cultures, the secularization of society, and a spectacular growth in the population of the West.

The ten chapters follow the arc of the persecutory policies of the Nazis and their sympathizers and the impact these measures had on Jewish children and adolescents-from the years leading to the war, to the roundups, deportations, and emigrations, to hidden life and death in the ghettos and concentration camps, and to liberation and coping in the wake of war. This volume examines the reactions of children to discrimination, the loss of livelihood in Jewish homes, and the public humiliation at the hands of fellow citizens and explores the ways in which children's experiences paralleled and diverged from their adult counterparts. Additional chapters reflect upon the role of non-Jewish children as victims, perpetrators, and bystanders during World War II. The edge of darkness

The edge of darkness

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Chase, Mary Ellen, PUBLISHER: Norton, How the mystery of the Bible's greatest story shaped geology: a MacArthur Fellow presents a surprising perspective on Noah's Flood. In Tibet, geologist David R. Montgomery heard a local story about a great flood that bore a striking similarity to Noah's Flood. Intrigued, Montgomery began investigating the world's flood stories and--drawing from historic works by theologians, natural philosophers, and scientists--discovered the counterintuitive role Noah's Flood played in the development of both geology and creationism. Steno, the grandfather of geology, even invoked the Flood in laying geology's founding principles based on his observations of northern Italian landscapes. Centuries later, the founders of modern creationism based their irrational view of a global flood on a perceptive critique of geology. With an explorer's eye and a refreshing approach to both faith and science, Montgomery takes readers on a journey across landscapes and cultures. In the process we discover the illusive nature of truth, whether viewed through the lens of science or religion, and how it changed through history and continues changing, even today.

Mrs. Stanton's Bible

Mrs. Stanton's Bible

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Kern, Kathi, PUBLISHER: Cornell University Press, Mrs. Stanton's Bible traces the impact of Elizabeth Cady Stanton's religious dissent on the suffrage movement at the turn of the century and presents the first book-length reading of her radical text, the Woman's Bible. Stanton is best remembered for organizing the Seneca Falls convention at which she first called for women's right to vote. Yet she spent the last two decades of her life working for another cause: women's liberation from religious oppression. Stanton came to believe that political enfranchisement was meaningless without the systematic dismantling of the church's stifling authority over women's lives. In , she collaboratively authored this biblical exegesis, just as the women's movement was becoming more conservative. Stanton found herself arguing not only against male clergy members but also against devout female suffragists. Kathi Kern demonstrates that the Woman's Bible itself played a fundamental role in the movement's new conservatism because it sparked Stanton's censure and the elimination of her fellow radicals from the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Mrs. Stanton's Bible dramatically portrays this crucial chapter of women's history and facilitates the understanding of one of the movement's most controversial texts.

No Good Deed: A Story of Medicine, Murder Accusations, and

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Cohen, Lewis Mitchell, PUBLISHER: Harper Paperbacks, On a blustery night, detectives from the Massachusetts State Police knocked on Amy Gleason's door. Gleason, along with fellow nurse Kim Hoy, had helped a patient deal with pain and suffering at the end of her life. Now the patient was dead, and the two nurses were being investigated for murder. Both believed they had done the right thing, but they had no idea what it would cost them. In this captivating and powerful true story, Dr. Lewis M. Cohen uses the experiences of Gleason, Hoy, and the nursing assistant who accused them of murder to explore what happens when decisions about end-of-life care shift from the hospital to the courtroom and the church. Tracing this issue from the uproar over Terri Schiavo's feeding tube to the controversial figure of Jack Kevorkian, and to the legitimate threat of serial killer medical professionals, Cohen goes behind the scenes on both sides of this debate. He examines how advances in modern medicine have given us tremendous tools for prolonging life but have also forced us to address how we treat patients who are dying and suffering.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Herbst, Jurgen, PUBLISHER: University of Wisconsin Press, Jurgen Herbst's account of growing up in Nazi Germany from to is a boy's experience of anti-Semitism and militarism from the inside. His father was a loving parent, a scholar, a man of principle -- and a German officer. Herbst was a middle-class boy in a Lutheran family that saw value in Prussian military ideals and a mythic German past. His is a compelling tale of moral awakening. He recalls his confusion as some of his classmates are no longer welcome at his school, and his consternation as he tries co reconcile what he learned from his favorite teachers and what was subsequently taught by their party replacements. His description of walking to school the morning after Kristallnacht is clear and chilling. A Hitler youth in the making, he joined the Jungvolk and slowly became aware of the real nature of the National Socialist regime. The story of that evolution -- a unique, insider's view of the Nazi youth movement -- is inspired by young Jurgen's deep friendships with his fellow students and their dedication to a military code of personal honor and loyalty. His devotion to those young men allowed him to endure scorn and deprivation and to risk personal well-being, even life, in the face of a brutal evil that demanded unquestioning allegiance.
