Numerous Europeans experimented with the new medium as they traveled throughout Latin America. This is the first book to document the extensive collaboration between writers and photographers in Latin America from the Mexican Revolution through the twentieth century. Divided into four parts, the first section includes essays that review the varied roles of photography in the context of Latin American violence. Section two discusses how collaborative projects have redefined conceptions of urban space in Latin America, including the urban explosion in Mexico City. Section three explores the integration of photographic images in novels, essays, and various forms of prose. Section four offers exclusive interviews with participants in collaborative works including photographers Sara Facio and Sebastiao Salgado, as well as cultural critics Nelly Richard and Elena Poniatowska.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Lglu, Catherine / Leglu, Catherine, PUBLISHER: Penn State University Press, The Occitan literary tradition of the later Middle Ages is a marginal and hybrid phenomenon, caught between the preeminence of French courtly romance and the emergence of Catalan literary prose. In this book, Catherine Leglu brings together, for the first time in English, prose and verse texts that are composed in Occitan, French, and Catalan-sometimes in a mixture of two of these languages. This book challenges the centrality of "canonical" texts and draws attention to the marginal, the complex, and the hybrid. It explores the varied ways in which literary works in the vernacular composed between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries narrate multilingualism and its apparent opponent, the mother tongue. Leglu argues that the mother tongue remains a fantasy, condemned to alienation from linguistic practices that were, by definition, multilingual. As most of the texts studied in this book are works of courtly literature, these linguistic encounters are often narrated indirectly, through literary motifs of love, rape, incest, disguise, and travel.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Dailey, Jane Elizabeth, PUBLISHER: University of North Carolina Press, Long before the Montgomery bus boycott ushered in the modern civil rights movement, black and white southerners struggled to forge interracial democracy in America. This innovative book examines the most successful interracial coalition in the nineteenth-century South, Virginia's Readjuster Party, and uncovers a surprising degree of fluidity in postemancipation southern politics. Melding social, cultural, and political history, Jane Dailey chronicles the Readjusters' efforts to foster political cooperation across the color line. She demonstrates that the power of racial rhetoric, and the divisiveness of racial politics, derived from the everyday experiences of individual Virginians--from their local encounters on the sidewalk, before the magistrate's bench, in the schoolroom. In the process, she reveals the power of black and white southerners to both create and resist new systems of racial discrimination. The story of the Readjusters shows how hard white southerners had to work to establish racial domination after emancipation, and how passionately black southerners fought each and every infringement of their rights as Americans.

TEN IN THE MORNING presents an evocative grouping of reader responses. This tandem collection presents Willian Corbett's poems as a response to American artist Gerald Coble's collage, which, itself, comprises responses to writings by Proust, Whitman, Melville, Dickinson, and Thoreau, and to the actress Ava Gardner. Together, these responses remind readers of the possibility of personal readings of public figures. As Corbett writes in his introduction, "Proust, Whitman, Melville, Dickinson, and Thoreau sit firmly in the Western world's pantheon of writers." Perhaps, they sit so far above us that it is easy to forget that those of us who love their work have a personal relationship to it. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rose, Janet, PUBLISHER: Hohm Press, Having worked as a newspaper reporter, a manager of a food cooperative, a coordinator of a rural health service and a Vista volunteer, Janet Rose thought her next step was to build her practice as a psychotherapist in a large southeastern city. In the summer of , however, almost overnight, her life took a radical turn. Following inner mystical guidance, she turned west, to the mountains of Colorado, to find God more deeply. In her quest for genuine wisdom, compassion and service, she left behind the vestiges of her previous life to pursue a path of renunciation and to apprentice herself to a spiritual teacher. How she made that choice, what that commitment entailed and how it changed every aspect of her life is what this book is about. Despite the long-standing tradition of the monastic life in many religions, and the relationship of master and disciple, the media today paint a negative, one-sided view of any situation that smacks of "cult" or "guru". Rather than hiding from the controversy, Janet Rose encounters it head-on and presents a real-life view of work with a teacher and participation in a spiritual community. This clearly written and deeply personal book presents an alternative to the status quo of security, success and power.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rodriguez, Juana Maria / El-Din, Morsi Saad / Mokhtar, Gamal, PUBLISHER: New York University Press, According to the census, Latinos/as have become the largest ethnic minority group in the United States. Images of Latinos and Latinas in mainstream news and in popular culture suggest a Latin Explosion at center stage, yet the topic of queer identity in relation to Latino/a America remains under examined. Juana MarA-a RodrA-guez attempts to rectify this dearth of scholarship in Queer Latinidad: Identity Practices, Discursive Spaces, by documenting the ways in which identities are transformed by encounters with language, the law, culture, and public policy. She identifies three key areas as the project's case studies: activism, primarily HIV prevention; immigration law; and cyberspace. In each, RodrA-guez theorizes the ways queer Latino/a identities are enabled or constrained, melding several theoretical and methodological approaches to argue that these sites are complex and dynamic social fields. As she moves the reader from one disciplinary location to the other, RodrA-guez reveals the seams of her own academic engagement with queer latinidad. This deftly crafted work represents a dynamic and innovative approach to the study of identity formation and representation, making a vital contribution to a new reformulation of gender and sexuality studies.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Addleton, Jonathan S. / Addleton, J. S., PUBLISHER: University of Georgia Press, Born in Pakistan to Baptist missionaries from rural Georgia, Jonathan S. Addleton crossed the borders of race, culture, class, and religion from an early age. "Some Far and Distant Place" combines family history, social observation, current events, and deeply personal commentary to tell an unusual coming-of-age story that has as much to do with the intersection of cultures as it does with one man's life. Whether sharing ice cream with a young Benazir Bhutto or selling gospel tracts at the tomb of a Sufi saint, Addleton provides insightful and sometimes hilarious glimpses into the Muslim-Christian encounter through the eyes of a young child. His narrative is rooted in many unlikely sources, including a southern storytelling tradition, Urdu ghazal, revivalist hymnology, and the "Anglican Book of Common Prayer." The natural beauty of the Himalayas also leaves a strong and lasting mark, providing solidity in a confusing world that on occasion seems about to tilt out of control. This clear-eyed, insightful memoir describes an experience that will become increasingly more common as cultures that once seemed remote and distant are no longer confined within the bounds of a single nation-state.

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Addison, David M., PUBLISHER: Authorhouse, With a song for every occasion, the author embarks on another adventure, this time to La Palma in the Canary Islands. Having learnt from previous encounters that neighbours are not conducive to good holidays, he elects this time to stay in a remote country cottage. If he imagined this would avoid encountering irritating people and ensure a trouble-free, idyllic, romantic holiday with his long-suffering wife, he was sadly mistaken. His gift for putting his foot in it, as usual, results in a series of tight scrapes, excruciatingly embarrassing for him, but which provides the reader with a vicarious sense of pleasure, not to mention Schadenfreude, appropriately enough, for Germans seem to cross the writer's path with amazing regularity. Follow in the author's footsteps, let him be your guide as he explores every aspect of this island, which, he concludes, is one of the most spectacular he has ever visited, yet one of the least visited in the Canarian archipelago. Along the way, seen from his personal and offbeat perspective, he will undoubtedly inform you, certainly entertain you and hopefully persuade you - you must visit this island before you die. But before he dies, the author considers some possible solutions before staring eternity in the face.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Tucker, Amy / Tucker, PUBLISHER: Boynton/Cook Publishers, In "Decoding ESL," Amy Tucker extends current research and theory on contrastive rhetoric to study ESL students tackling the art and skill of writing and reading literature. For her, contrastive rhetoric is not a matter of comparing usage in the native language for explanations of mistakes in English. Contrastive rhetoric must include information about the two cultures, about expectations and other sociocultural variables that influence and affect communication. Each chapter investigates successive stages in the attainment of college skills in a second language, from the absorption of grammar structures and expository patterns to encounters with American literature. Along the way, the book considers the overriding concerns of current composition practice and theory: issues of learner motivation, syllabus design, collaborative classroom techniques, revision strategies, reading/writing connections, and communicative contexts of discourse. Tucker pursues a neglected area of study, arguing clearly and strongly that ESL students should develop their own responses to what they read. Her students engage in a range of communicative tasks, including interviews, class discussions, journal writing, and essay and revision assignments. Her discussions of the students' work prove how careful analysis of language can help you understand not just that one student, but many. Sample syllabi show how you can do the same.

The conversations frequently sparkle with humor; at other moments they are infused with profound seriousness. Maryse Conde is the recipient of the French literary awards Le Grand Prix Litteraire de la Femme and Le Prix de l'Academie Francaise. ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Swanton, John R. / Tanner, Helen H. / Tanner, Helen Hornbeck, PUBLISHER: University of Oklahoma Press, First published in , John R. Swanton's "Source Material on the History and Ethnology of the Caddo Indians" is a classic reference on the Caddos. Long regarded as the dean of southeastern Native American studies, Swanton worked for decades as an ethnographer, ethnohistorian, folklorist, and linguist. In this volume he presents the history and culture of the Caddos according to the principal French, Spanish, and English sources. In the seventeenth century, French and Spanish explorers encountered four regional alliances -- Cahinnio, Cadohadacho, Hasinai, and Natchitoches -- within the boundaries of the present-day states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma. Their descriptions of Caddo culture are the earliest sources available, and Swanton weaves the information from these primary documents into a narrative, translated into English, for the benefit of the modern reader. For the scholar, he includes in an appendix the entire text of three principal documents in their original Spanish. The first half of the book is devoted to an extensive history of the Caddos, from De Soto's encounters in to the Caddos' involvement in the Ghost Dance Religion of . The second haft discusses Caddo culture, including origin legends and religious beliefs, material culture, social relations, government, warfare, leisure, and trade. For this edition, Helen Hornbeck Tanner also provides a new foreword surveying the scholarship published on the Caddos since Swanton's time.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rentschler, Carrie A., PUBLISHER: Duke University Press, The U.S. victims' rights movement has transformed the way that violent crime is understood and represented in the United States. It has expanded the concept of victimhood to include family members and others close to direct victims, and it has argued that these secondary victims may be further traumatized through their encounters with insensitive journalists and the cold, impersonal nature of the criminal justice system. This concept of extended victimization has come to dominate representations of crime and the criminal legal apparatus in the United States. In "Second Wounds," Carrie A. Rentschler examines how the victims' rights movement brought about such a marked shift in how Americans define and portray crime. Analyzing the movement's effective mobilization of activist networks and its implementation of media strategies, she interprets texts such as press kits, online victim memorials, media training manuals for victims' advocates, and booklets advising journalists on covering crime from a victim's perspective. Rentschler also provides a genealogy of the victims' rights movement from its emergence in the s into the twenty-first century. She explains that while a "get tough on crime" outlook dominates the movement, the concept of secondary victimization has been invoked by activists across the political spectrum, including anti-death penalty advocates, who contend that the families of death-row inmates are also secondary victims of violent crime and the criminal justice system.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Rowe, Peter G. / Kuan, Seng, PUBLISHER: MIT Press (MA), Built around snatches of discussion overheard in a Beijing design studio, this book explores attitudes toward architecture in China since the opening of the Treaty Ports in the s. Central to the discussion are the concepts of ti and yong, or "essence" and "form," Chinese characters that are used to define the proper arrangement of what should be considered modern and essentially Chinese. Ti and yong have gone through various transformations--for example, from "Chinese learning for essential principles and Western learning for practical application" to "socialist essence and cultural form" and an almost complete reversal to "modern essence and Chinese form." The book opens with a discussion of cultural developments in China in response to the forced opening to the West in the mid-nineteenth century, efforts to reform the Qing dynasty, and the Nationalist and Communist regimes. It then considers the return of overseas-educated Chinese architects and foreign influences on Chinese architecture, four architectural orientations toward tradition and modernity in the s and s, and the controversy over the use of "big roofs" and other sinicizing aspects of Chinese architecture in the s. The book then moves to the hard economic conditions of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, when architecture was almost abandoned, and the beginning of reform and opening up to the outside world in the late s and s. Finally, it looks at the present socialist market economy and Chinese architecture during the still incomplete process of modernization. It closes with a prognosis for the future.
ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Bernstein, Carol L., PUBLISHER: Penn State University Press, Bernstein explores the representation of the city in Victorian fiction--from the scandal of its slums, through the sublime of its fashionable society, to a darker urban sublime. The Celebration of Scandal analyzes the urban fiction of both well-known novelists (Dickens, Gissing, James, and Meredith) and more marginal writers (Disraeli and Bulwer-Lytton) in terms of their representations of the city, both the scandalous and the sublime. It also includes a discussion of the dandy novels of Catherine Gore, whose parodies of high life are virtually unknown to modern readers. Bernstein explores the scandals lying at the heart of the representation of the city in Victorian fiction. Social scandals--slums that belie the myths of urban progress, for instance--are only intensified by methods of representation that overturn mimetic conventions. But if one pole of this study is the scandal, then its opposite is the sublime. Bernstein examines the parodic mode of the dandy and moves to the serious urban sublime that records urban experience in its ambiguity, its narcissism, its negativity, and its strength. Bernstein then discusses fictional and nonfictional urban sketches that present many of the problems facing urban artists in their encounters with the city. She stakes out new territory, blending the work of major critics of Victorian literature (Steven Marcus, Hillis Miller, etc.), lesser-known nineteenth-century urban texts, and a substantial dosage of Continental materials, ranging from the crucial work of Baudelaire and his great expositor, Walter Benjamin, to theorists such as Freud, Bakhtin, Foucault, Barthes, and Lacan.
