Al suo apparire, questo romanzo, uno dei capisaldi dell'intera produzione balzachiana, fu immediatamente salutato da una critica entusiasta e concorde come il capolavoro di una nuova letteratura realista. I personaggi sono ben delineati: il titolo allude alla fanciulla Grandet, ma la figura che prende il sopravvento è papà Grandet, un uomo sordido, teso a difendere le apparenze e pronto a bloccare, per il proprio egosimo ed interesse, le legittime aspirazioni della figlia. L'intreccio è interessante per se stesso, ma viene esaltato dal ritmo della scrittura e dalla originalità del linguaggio ancora oggi modernamente attuale.
