Antica scultura in bronzo
L'Ottocento è ricordato oggi come il secolo degli Impressionisti. Bisogna però dire che il pubblico d'allora aveva gusti assai diversi dai nostri, basti pensare al successo di cui godevano la pittura e la scultura di genere. Il genere "animalier" era molto in voga e artisti come Rosa Bonheur, Antoine-Louis Barye, Edwin Landseer, Auguste Cain vendevano le proprie opere ancor prima d'averle iniziate. Di preferenza, gli scultori trattavano i soggetti a loro familiari. Primeggiavano dunque gli animali domestici ma c'era pure chi, seguendo la moda orientalista, plasmava animali esotici. Il dromedario, per esempio, figura nella produzione artistica del già nominato Barye ma anche in quella di Alphonse Arson, Christophe Fratin, Hyppolite Heizler, Agathon Léonard, Emmanuel Frémiet, Henri-Alfred Jacquemart e molti altri scultori del secolo XIX. E' allora possibile fare un confronto fra le sculture di rinomati maestri e l'opera qui proposta in vendita. Si tratta d'un dromedario di bronzo, creato nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento da un artista ignoto. Chiunque abbia accesso alle fonti iconografiche può fare osservazioni interessanti. Può innanzitutto verificare che i maestri in questione, persino il celebrato Barye, danno al dromedario una posa poco "naturale". Il dromedario non ha posa statica o "equina" ma appare sciolto e dinoccolato, com'è nella sua natura. L'artista indaga l'anatomia dell'animale riproducendone minuziosamente le fattezze e plasmando le innumerevoli pieghe, infossamenti e protuberanze che movimentano la superficie del suo corpo.
